I have 2 Slackware installs at home, both tracking -current. When 13.37 is officially released I'm considering changing one of those to remain as "stable" for general family consumption. My question is...when the next release comes, how painless and/or successful is the upgrade process. Yes I know of the detailed upgrade instructions by Pat V, and I know I'd have no difficulty executing them.
View 5 RepliesI've just installed Xubuntu last night on a spare drive because I really wanted to try it out. Install and initial setup (upgrades, extras and so on) worked like a charm, then I got to burn an audio cd with Brasero starting from some mp3s floating around my external media drive. The burn process itself went good and the CD is fully readable, but I notice that CD-text is missing.
So, when I added files to the main window of Brasero id3 tags were there (I've seen them, plus I set each and every of them via Easytag before putting the files in my external media drive so I'm sure of that), but once the CD was finished there was no CD-text at all. Maybe I just have to download some additional packages which aren't included in Brasero or have missed some menu item about CD-text?
I'm excited to try the new 2.0.1 version of Guile. I'm running Slackware64 13.37 and the latest version of Guile distributed with it is 1.8.8. I see that this new version, as part of it's new capabilities, has a few new requirements. I have built and installed libffi, libunistring and libgc according to their install instructions, but Guile's configure script can't find them.
I have tried manually creating libffi.pc libunistring.pc and libgc.pc files, which has allowed configure to get past the first two, but I still can't determine the correct name for libgc. Further, I am now not confident that Guile will find these where it expects to find them in the end. I would like to ask for some clarification of the install process for this new version of Guile, but I'm not sure whom to ask.
I upgraded one of my Squeeze installations to Wheezy, but after selecting it in grub, nothing is displayed on screen: no CLI and no GUI. I tried Ctrl + Alt + F[1-7] and I got nothing. My laptop is Acer Aspire 7715Z. I am attributing this to module as there seems to be disk activity, but without a screen, I cannot be certain.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI hit some trouble upgrading from FC 10 to FC 12 using the netinst CD. I had previously successfully upgraded the system from FC5 to FC10 with the same method - that time everything went well. At first the upgrade went well - the installation program found my FC installation and detected the partitions right. The problem appeared when about 90% of the rpm's were installed. Anaconda was complaining about a fatal error with a package and quit.
After rebooting and restarting the installation program it does not recognize my partitions anymore and suggests I'd format them for a fresh installation. As all my data is there I'd rather not do that. I then rebooted again and chose "Repair" from the installation menu. I got to the console and noticed that all partitions mounted cleanly and all the data seems to be there. Trying to reboot from the hard disk almost works. The system gets up, goes through grub, gets the kernel running and mounts the disks but fails to launch Xorg.
I get to a terminal login from here by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2. When I type the user name and press enter the terminal seems to crash - does not ask for the password but simply returns to the user name query. An error message flashes just after pressing enter but too quickly for me to read. When I boot from CD again and go to the terminal via the "Repair" option the previous events can be seen from /var/log/messages. Xorg tries to start and stops trying after a certain amount of failures. After that it says this:

My best guess is that this happens because the upgrade was aborted before it completed and hence some necessary rpm's were left out. I figured I could possibly fix this by updating the packages with yum from the terminal if I got to log in. What should I do now? Could I for example try and manually copy some missing files to the disk as I can access it via the repair option?
what the odds are of successfully installing from 9.10 to 10.04 without something nasty happening?

I've a problem which occurs during the boot process.I'll turn on the machine and Slackware (13) will begin loading. I'll get the "BIOS data check successful message" and then the screen will go black. Nothing happens after that. This doesn't happen every time I boot and other than that, Slackware works fine.I'm guessing it's the video card. Uname and lspci output to follow.

Trying to do the upgrade through "Software Updates", however because there are no current updates, I cannot click on the "Upgrade" button to begin the upgrade process to FC14.
Is there any other way to do this besides downloading the DVD and installing?
I recently upgraded to slackware-current from Slackware 13 via slackroll, and have only encountered one problem. My file manager no longer thumbnails images, and icons (mostly PNG) aren't appearing no matter what GTK theme is set. Running from the command line produces no errors, and when brought up in something else (say feh /path/to/icon.png) it works perfectly. This is the only hitch I have encountered so far. The same thing happens with emoticons in Pidgin. Does anyone know of a fix?

I suspect it's probably an issue with the Nvidia drivers (I forgot to swith my xorg to the nv drivers; I knew I'd be getting a new kernel). Anyway, it leaves me with an unusable computer. Is there anyway I can get into a console before x tries to start. BTW, the ctrl-alt-f1 hotkey isn't working.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from F12 to F13 and the result is a mess. From F11 to F12, I*used preupgrade and it worked flawlessly. This time, the process ended on a blank screen. So, I downloaded the DVD and I suppose the files downloaded by preupgarde were used as there were almost no connections to the net during the upgrade process. The problem now is that apparently almost all the FC12 files are still on my system:

Of course, as I said, the previous upgrade went flawlessly and I didn't check what happened on the system with the rpm and locate commands but I doubt is looked that bad. Seeing what kind of mess my system was turned into, I now worry about the next upgrade.

I am unable to complete the installation of Slack 13.0 on a new machine with Intel DH55HC motherboard and Intel Core i5 750 processor. The installation proceeds smoothly until the 3'rd CD and then hangs at the FONTCONFIG UPDATE stage. The hung process is apparently rescan-scsi-bus which reaches this stage

It is not possible to kill this process even with "kill -9". I have to kill the parent process which is Slack setup, so the installation is incomplete. There is another recent thread on this issue [URL] but it did not resolve my problem. How to correct or bypass this difficulty (maybe another kernel? I use the default).
Slack is 32bit. Frequently, firefox becomes unresponsive. I can close the window, but the process is not terminated. I am not able to restart firefox without rebooting.
When this problems occurs the firefox processes are not terminated by the 'kill' command. Example

this is not specifically a slackware related question, but since done on 2 slackware boxes... the situation is, i have one box for browsing and other desktop activities and another box acting as router/local server. what i want to achieve is that the router box would look on a nfs mounted folder for new *.torrent files (which i put there from the desktop box) and if there is a new file, it would start downloading it automatically. also a good thing would be if it would notify me when finished.so how would you go about itwhat torrent client would you use and so on? maybe someone has already done something like this?

1. How hard/messy is the Lenny to Squeeze upgrade at this time?
2. Where can I find straightforward, clear directions on how to upgrade?
For quite some time, I just stayed on testing and incrementally upgraded on a regular basis, but stopped after Lenny came out because security support was suspended. Now I'd like to climb back on that train.FWIW, I originally installed Slink in 1999 and haven't reinstalled from scratch since, despite several generations of hardware upgrades.

and hangs for another 120 seconds. In X11 I have no sound at all even after running alsaconf with no errors. My sound works perfectly in Ubuntu, so it's not a hardware problem. Are the two problems related or are they two separate things? Any help here would be hot.
I have a java process running in background. I have no java dependent program opened and even if I had, this program should be killed if I kill the Java process. top shows that Java causes almost 90% cpu usage.

Where do I change the option to have samba start during the boot process? I've googled and I've found old posts that say it's a line in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2 but in my semi-current box, I don't see the part about starting stopping the samba server.

I'm having a strange issue with a RHEL 5.2 system with SE Linux. I can scp files to it, but I always have to hit ctrl+c to end the scp process. The file transfers 100% and everything, but scp just hangs there for a long time, or until I kill it. If I wait until it dies on its own, its exit value is 1.
