Fedora :: Process Hanging On Futex?

Sep 24, 2009

I am working on Fedora core 4 with kernel verion 2.6.11.. I am running a Manager process which spawns child process. If a child process exits , the SIGCHLD signal is processed in parent process and it is forked again. When the parent process receives a SIGTERM signal it first tries to kill the child process using SIGTERM signal . if the child process dosen't get stopped then kill it using SIGKILL. Now,the Parent process sometimes gets hanged and the strace shows :
futex(0x98535e0, FUTEX_WAIT, 2, NULL <unfinished ...>

General :: Hanging Fedora When It Is Booting?

Jul 19, 2011

I'm having problems booting up my Fedora 14 system. I see the Fedora splash screen (the one with the egg-like logo that colorizes as it loads); the logo fills up completely and then everything hangs - all I see is the egg logo, and nothing else is ever displayed. I also can't get to any of the ttys via the CTRL-F1 sequences.

I can boot into single user mode just fine. The install scripts all run just fine. The system itself is actually up an running, so I suspect this is either something in the KDE startup, or after init processes all of the start up scripts.

I'm assuming this isn't a startup script problem, because I see a "started XXX" message for every service in the rc.5 directory - in other words, all the startup scripts ran from rc.5.

So, how do I find out what is hanging? I'm not seeing anything in /var/log/messages, and pstree didn't tell me much about what init was doing.

I used to be able to follow inittab to see all the things it did at boot, but since inittab was stripped of everything it used to do a few releases ago, I don't know what init is doing anymore.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 - Delay / Hanging Of 3 Minutes During Boot Process

Aug 4, 2010

Every time I boot up OpenSUSE 11.3 it hangs at the same "position" for approximately 3 minutes and then continues to boot. Unfortunately I see no corresponding error log e.g. in dmesg output. Hence, I don't know what is the reason for that. Here is my dmesg output. The delay occurs at 20 seconds after beginning of boot process (line 1085). I also analyzed the boot process with bootchart.
My computer: Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad R400.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 DVD Hanging - No Window Opened To Start Process

Dec 27, 2010

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and made created a DVD. When I started installing it, I'm not able to do it. I think its hanging. This is what happening: First I found a screen saying 'ubuntu 10.10' and it loaded for some time then I got a screen with a black color task bar at the top of the screen, then after some time it turned into white color and after some time it disappeared. Nothing else happened. I didn't find any pop-up window to start installation of OS..

But when I tried this in my friends house, I found that instead of 'ubuntu 10.10' there came 'Ubuntu' LOGO and it was little bit slow but a pop-up window opened to start installation..
Why its not coming in my PC..
my computer configuration :
Windows XP, SP 2
256 MB RAM, 1.81 Ghz
AMD 64 Athlon Processor 1800+
I want to shift my OS to Ubuntu completely.

Fedora Installation :: Best Method Of Dual Booting (Different Filesystems)

Nov 23, 2010

After recently looking around the Linux world, I decided that I would also like to try fedora. Primarily because of the BTRFS file system that I would like to try out while still having Ubuntu as my main OS. Normally, I'd just partition as usual as I would with any of my other OSs, however this is the first time I have tried to dual boot two Linux installs on two different file systems. Does anybody have a better method of going about this? Or to just go about it as usual and install on two different partitions? Also, I do not want to wipe the data from the computer as it is now. I have it all backed up, but I don't really want to go through the hassle.

Slackware :: Setting Up An Old Desktop (Dell Dimension 4300/512mb RAM/20g&80g Hdd) As A Media/file Server And Using 13 For It?

Jan 1, 2010

I'm thinking of setting up an old desktop (Dell Dimension 4300/512mb RAM/20g&80g hdd) as a media/file server and using Slackware 13 for it. I'm completely new to doing anything server-wise,it of background: I'm running current versions of Zenwalk and Vector on two different laptops, with the Zenwalk one multi-booting Vista and Ubuntu. The desktop in question is running XP and Zenwalk. I have DSL hooked up to a Linksys WRT (running dd-wrt firmware) for network. I'm not a noob, just not in my comfort zone. My goal is, in addition to setting up the server, to get more hands under the hood (so to speak) on improving my linux skills. It was a toss up between Slack and CentOS, and being very familiar with Slack-based systems, I'm going that route.

Slackware :: How To Change Mounting Method To Suit Needs

May 18, 2010

I am after some suggestions on how I could change my mounting method to suit my needs. At the moment, I simply mount the device to a location as root. What I would like to do is setup automounting, but in a particular way. In particular, I would like it if when I put in a usb stick, it would be automatically mounted to say /media/usb1, and a second stick would be to /media/usb2, while an esata connected drive would go to /media/sata1

Even better would be if I put in the first usb stick and it was mounted at /media/usb1, it would *always* be mounted at /media/usb1, no matter what order I connected it to my computer in.I would also like to quickly ask about the difference about udev rules and HAL. At the moment I have only used HAL for my touchpad, and have not touched udev at all. What are the differences/advantages etc...

Hardware :: Intermittent Booting On New Dell PC?

Jun 24, 2011

This was originally posted on the Ubuntu forum, but someone suggested it might be a hardware problem, so I've re-posted (and updated) here: Quote: Originally Posted by Girts My shiny new Dell has developed a booting problem over the last few weeks. When the Dell engineer came to replace a suspected failing hard drive, he realised the noise was coming from the fan on the graphics card (ATI Radeon HD6670). I mentioned the PC was reluctant to boot first time, so he replaced the whole graphics card. However, the PC is still intermittently reluctant to boot first time (3 tries a few days ago, but OK since).

Before I call Dell again, I want to be sure it's actually their problem and not a Ubuntu/Linux thing! I'm not fluent in Linux, but has anyone got any thoughts on this?

Ubuntu Networking :: AW-NE766 (Ralink 2860) Not Detected?

May 13, 2010

I have an EEEPC 1000HE that has an AzureWave AW-NE766 wireless card. As far as I know, the card is based on the Ralink 2860 chipset.

It always worked fine under eeebuntu 3.0, but I just installed Ubuntu NBR 10.4 and now it's not detected at all.

Kernel : 2.6.32-22-generic i686

lspci and lshw show no mention of wireless card at all. Network-manager and wicd both show wired connections, but no mention of wireless at all.

I followed the instructions on the "Solved" post to install the latest Ralink driver from Jan 29. It all went fine, except "ifconfig wlan0 up/down" and "ifconfig ra0 up/down" both return "ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device"

how to tell Ubuntu that I have a wireless card in there?

General :: Proper Method To Install Slackware / OpenSuSe As Dual Boot?

Jan 5, 2011

I just received my Slackware 13.1 & the 'Official Guide to Slackware Linux' book. I know that there is a big learning curve to use Slackware and that is why I purchased it - according to Distrowatch, "...if you learn Slackware, you learn Linux!" But, while I am 'learning Linux', I would still like to have a linux distro installed that would be more of a 'no-brainer'.

So the question is, which distro should I install first, Slackware or say, OpenSuse? I know that if I were going to dual-boot with XP, that XP should be installed first - does order matter for 2 linux distros too? Also, are there any points to remember to do during the installation processes so that I end up with a working, dual-boot computer?

OpenSUSE Install :: Slow Boot Process In A Dell XPS M1330 With 11.2?

I have a Dell XPS M1330 with Opensuse 11.2 and Windows Vista Business in a dual boot hard disk.

I was using Fedora 11 before Opensuse, and it was fast and performed well. However I installed Opensuse because I like KDE 4.3 and this is the best KDE distro.

After the last kernel update my system lost initrd, I restored creating an initrd with chroot, mount and mkinitrd from a rescue disk. After first boot, I reinstalled the kernel update, so the initrd was replaced by the new one created in the update.

However, my system is very slow, I don't know where to look for bad configuration or anything else. The boot process took 220 seconds.

Here is my bootchar,
