Slackware :: Guile Upgrade Dependency - Install Process?

Jun 6, 2011

I'm excited to try the new 2.0.1 version of Guile. I'm running Slackware64 13.37 and the latest version of Guile distributed with it is 1.8.8. I see that this new version, as part of it's new capabilities, has a few new requirements. I have built and installed libffi, libunistring and libgc according to their install instructions, but Guile's configure script can't find them.

I have tried manually creating libffi.pc libunistring.pc and libgc.pc files, which has allowed configure to get past the first two, but I still can't determine the correct name for libgc. Further, I am now not confident that Guile will find these where it expects to find them in the end. I would like to ask for some clarification of the install process for this new version of Guile, but I'm not sure whom to ask.

Slackware :: Painless Or Successful Is Upgrade Process?

Apr 17, 2011

I have 2 Slackware installs at home, both tracking -current. When 13.37 is officially released I'm considering changing one of those to remain as "stable" for general family consumption. My question is...when the next release comes, how painless and/or successful is the upgrade process. Yes I know of the detailed upgrade instructions by Pat V, and I know I'd have no difficulty executing them.

OpenSUSE Install :: Dependency Error During Patch Upgrade Of KDE 4.3.5 Update

Feb 25, 2010

I get following error during automatic patch upgrade of my SuSE 11.2 to latest path revision. I assume it is due to the KDE 4.3.5 Update part of the patch set: compiz-kde4-0.7.8-9.14.x86_64 requires libkdecorations.so.4()(64 bit) but there are no providers. The package manager suggest to replace compiz-kde4-0.7.8-9.14.x86_64 with kwin-4.3.5-0.2.1.x86_64 but I don't want to loose compiz-kde. which repository I must add to resolve the dependency.

Slackware :: Dependency Management And Configuration

Feb 23, 2010

I am a Linux noob (running Ubuntu 9.10) and not even an advanced Win. user. However, my switch to Linux was for simplicity, stability, fewer crashes, and the open-source software philosophy. However, Ubuntu hasn't been what I am hoping for. While Scientific Linux and Vector seem like good second choices, they don't seem to have the community/enthusiasm that Slackware has. However everything I read is all about "dependency management" w/r/t Slackware. Is this really a big problem? As a newbie, how will I deal with it? I am willing to learn but realize that I am starting from scratch.

Slackware :: Fastest Route To 'Dependency Hell'?

Jul 7, 2011

Moderator: If this post doesnt belong here, please move it to where it belongs. I like the KDE environment but there are so many menu items that I am not interested in or do not use. For example, I use LibreOffice, not Koffice; I use only Firefox & Chrome; I dont use a PIM.There seems to be a lot of duplication to satisfy different preferences.Further, there are a bunch of environments (flukebox etc) that I am not interested in. I thought that if I removed all the stuff that is of no interest to me, that I could have a personalized, uncluttered Slackware 13.37 system that would occupy less disk space and take less time to back up.

I know that you can remove menu items without removing the underlying programs but, if I can get rid of the programs without trashing my system, that is what I would like to do. (I am assuming that I can reinstall some or all later.)

If I were a Slackware guru, I would probably install some sort of Slackware Minimal but then I would probably drive you all crazy with endless posts to this forum. So, the question is: If I use pkgtool to remove the stuff that I do not want, will I end up in Dependency issue Hell

Fedora Installation :: Post Upgrade Dependency - Yum Broken?

Jan 28, 2011

I recently upgraded to Fedora 14 from F13 using Yum, it worked to my amazement except now yum appears to be broken because of a massive amount of dependency issues. It appears the old F13 packages are still around and yum is unable to get ride of them because their dependency with F14 packages of the same name. I tried yum distro-sync, and I tried yum resolvedep $(package-cleanup --orphans) --skip-broken but to no avail. Package--cleanup--orphans identifies all of the left over F13 packages.

I also can't install or upgrade anything using Yum, does give me a reason except the massive amount of dependency issues with the left over F13 packages. When I use the graphical software update it tells me among other things that Yum and RPM have updates but of course it won't update. I did follow the instructions and used yum update yum before I upgraded to F14, maybe it didn't take? Anyway to resolve this issue other than a clean install?

Slackware :: Upgrade Firefox In 12.1 And Install Jre Plugins?

Oct 16, 2010

i'm having trouble installing the jre in firefox3.6. I'm using slackware 12.1 which comes with the default firefox 2. Downloaded 3.6 into my systems this is where i install:

Code:

root@linux:/usr/lib/firefox3.6

I download the jre 6 from the java website and this is where i install:

Code:

chongming@linux:/usr/local/jre1.6.0_21

I create a symbolic link into the firefox3.6 plugin folder using this command:

Code:

root@linux:/usr/lib/firefox3.6/plugins# ln -s /usr/local/jre1.6.0_21//plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Double check to see if the link exists:

Code:

root@linux:/usr/lib/firefox3.6/plugins# ls -l
total 20
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 66 2010-10-17 01:24 libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /usr/local/jre1.6.0_21//plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 15716 2010-10-17 00:49 libnullplugin.so

Restart the firefox and type aboutlugins, the java plugin does not exists. I went to the java website and test to see if jre is install in firefox, but could not detect. This is the permission for the firefox 3.6 dir in the /usr/lib path:

Code:

root@linux:/usr/lib# ls -ld firefox3.6/
drwxr-xr-x 13 root root 4096 2010-10-17 00:49 firefox3.6/

Is there any where i miss or i install the symbolic link in the wrong plugin folder? where does the firefox read its plugins?
