I have a java process running in background. I have no java dependent program opened and even if I had, this program should be killed if I kill the Java process. top shows that Java causes almost 90% cpu usage.

Is there any way to monitor one process' CPU usage and RAM usage over time on Linux? I am trying to change to a cheaper VPS and need to work out what level of CPU and RAM I need!
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe have an internal application which takes below 10% cpu usage normally. However sometimes it hit above 85% or more (and stays there) causing the server to become very slow. Currently we have to monitor this manually, kill the process and manually start it.
command / script that will kill the process (using pid will be the best option as i think) when it reaches 85% or higher
(I saw another question that suggested to use monit but I have to get this done using the standard commands available in the current installation - RHEL5)
I'm new to the linux world and its been quit sometime since i've done any programming. However, I'm writing a program which simply calculates the load average of a process. In doing this I need to use the uptime command for linux in a java program. I've done a little bit of searching on the net and it mentions this is possiable by using java runtime command. Unfortunatly though I have yet to find a working example of this. I've tried just simply reading the /proc/uptime file but I have no clue how to format the 2 numbers in seconds to make it the same as if you just typed in uptime in the linux command prompt.
View 2 Replies View Relatedthe process is mcelog. When I do as root kill -9 2323 which is pid of mcelog the process is not killed. I tried doing the same from top, press K and enter pid of mcelog. doing ps auwx | grep mcelog I see there are several results. I tried killing all of them like kill -9 2355 2341 3425 2345. But re-running the above commands still shows them as running. How else would I troubleshoot this to avoid restarting of the box.

When this problems occurs the firefox processes are not terminated by the 'kill' command. Example

The installation proceeds smoothly until the 3'rd CD and then hangs at the FONTCONFIG UPDATE stage. The hung process is apparently rescan-scsi-bus which reaches this stage

It is not possible to kill this process even with "kill -9". I have to kill the parent process which is Slack setup, so the installation is incomplete. I run Freenet occasionally, but not all the time. Freenet doesn't run unless told to, but Java loads on every boot and sits there and hogs resources for no reason whatsoever. What's worse, as soon as I kill it with fire (sudo kill -9 "PID"), it respawns within seconds. How do I make Java not load unless required? And die and stay dead when I want it dead?

Is there any way to kill the vlc-process (without booting the machine)? I also tried the "killall vlc" and "kill 31641" as root with the same results.
I have Debian jessie and the only "nonofficial" repositories I have enabled are

And from those I have installed only chrome, and wine-development, and I dont think those could have anything to do with this problem.
