General :: ARCH & Slackware's Bootup/mounting Process?

Jul 9, 2010

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what file, etc is the equivalent of ARCH's /etc/rc.sysinit? I need to know this because I am having many problems making the new nfluxos iso's for ARCH because of how ARCH now mounts stuff at bootup

due to whatever changed in udev or udisks or something else in ARCH now, when I make the system into a livecd it doublemounts everything when booting for example; output of "mount" in nfluxos with 3.4squashfs udev 151

Code:
[root@nfluxos ~]# mount
rootfs on / type rootfs (rw)
aufs on / type aufs (rw,relatime,si=4ce08f22,nowarn_perm)
none on /proc type proc (rw,relatime)
none on /sys type sysfs (rw,relatime)

General :: Mounting Samba Shares At Bootup?

Sep 3, 2010

I'm using ubuntu 10.04 (gnome) - at some point, I had manually mounted a samba share on the home fileserver,

mount -t cifs //homeserver/sharename /serverfiles

It now boots up automatically every time, which is definitely convenient but I don't know how it's being done. I'm going to be mounting the same share using sshfs when I'm away so I'd like to know how it works. When I googlify this, there is mention of altering fstab (which has not been done) or gnome-mount (which does not seem to be it). There is nothing in preferences/startup applications, what is the automounting mechanism being used?

I'm mainly asking beforehand so I won't have to shoot myself in the head twenty minutes from now. I suppose I'll find/figure out one way or the other anyway . Can I just source the 32dev.sh and then run sbopkg -i if the source for the package I want to create isn't 64bit capable? I might need to change the $ARCH variable to x86_64 too, right?

Slackware :: When I Used Arch Linux, One Of Favorite Stops At The Forums Was The Community Contributions Section?

Feb 3, 2010

One thing that really bothers me about Slackware is the lack of unified, well maintained, and up-to-date documentation, but what keeps me coming back is the outstanding community. I see a lot of community contributions floating around on these forums, but they often get buried in all the questions and other posts people create. I know there's a search feature, but sometimes it's fun to browse an organized list of the community's work and see if I find anything fun or interesting.

Back when I used Arch Linux, one of my favorite stops at the forums was the Community Contributions section. The FreeBSD forums also have a section for user-contributed HOWTOse should have a section like this. Call it "Contributions" and place it by the "Installation" section at the top of this forum. It would provide a great place for users to check out what the other slackers have come up with without making a thread of their own to ask (which will probably result in many duplicate threads) or digging up an ancient thread. The only new threads allowed there could be a HOWTO, a new process or method a user discovered, or a user-made script/program/etc. Of course, other users should be able to comment with their replies for suggestions and/or improvements.

Slackware :: 13.37 - Blank Screen On Bootup

Mar 11, 2011

I have a clean install of slackware 13.37, downloaded today from slackware64current. On boot, I get a black screen - not just black, but no video signal out of the video card, or at least nothing that the monitor recognizes. Fortunately, I can ssh into the box from another machine. If I do, I can startx and xfce starts up and appears as expected. lspci shows:

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Device 9714
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Device 6898

I have an onboard video chipset with a monitor connected to it, and an ATI 5970 in a pcie slot with a monitor also connected to it. xfce appears on the pcie card (the 5970) as expected, as this is (supposedly) the primary monitor, and the monitor connected to the onboard video output is blank - no signal, also as expected as I have not yet installed the ATI drivers. So the question is - how do I get the terminal output on bootup to appear on one of my monitors? I'm not sure where it is going, and this is out out of my area of expertise.

i just installed slackware 13.37 which worked fine but when i boot it up it runs a number of lines and then the screen just goes black... i can login as root blindly and start x (i THINK, judging from hdd led)... but screen stays black... its a laptop and closing/opening the lid doesnt work either...

i am dualbooting with slack 13.1 which runs fine... it switches screen res at some point during boot (font is smaller) and i would say that is the point where the screen goes black in 13.37...

OpenSUSE Network :: NFS - Mounting During Boot Process On 11.4?

May 11, 2011

Using OpenSUSE 11.4 on a backup server. At boot, it needs to connect to the main server's NFS share. Watching the text scroll up the screen, it's obvious that the system waits for anything up to several minutes showing 'mounting NFS...'. Once it (eventually) passes that point, the rest of the boot procedure is as fast as expected.

If NFS is disabled at boot, normal boot times are restored. If the NFS client is restarted via 'rcnfs restart' once the system is up and running, it's instant. If NFS is disabled at boot and started manually afterwards, it start instantly. Once running, NFS behaves normally. The backup server has two ethernet ports, connected via a switch to the main server, which also has two ethernet ports. All ports are configured via DHCP from a router, with all addresses reserved on the router so that all important devices are kept at the same locations.

General :: Arch Does Not See Wlan0 Or Eth0

Aug 12, 2011

On a new Dell Lattitude e6400, I have installed both arch and Ubuntu. Ubuntu recognized wifi and ethernet right away and connected and is working fine, but in arch, I am having more problems then I usually do when using arch. From the output of lspci the ethernet is a intel device 1502, I have researched this and found it to need the e1000e module as its driver. I modprobed this module sucessfully, but no ethernet. With wlan, i have found that the card is a DW1501 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card that has a broadcom 4727 chip in it. I downloaded the windows driver for this chip and isntalled it with ndiswrapper but this did not help. What I think is the root of the problem is the error message that restarting networking creates.

Quote:

Dell only supplies drivers for ubuntu, but it should still be possible to get this to work. I have tried booting various live distros that I had drives for and I found that the parted magic boot disk saw the ethernet port and was able to connect to ethernet, and that the ubuntu live disk was able to connect to both wifi and ethernet. Somehow they must be seeing the prescense of the hardware in a way that I have not tried with arch. Please help, I really need to get this computer workign with arch.

General :: Cannot Use The Arch Repository After Installing

Jan 10, 2010

The first problem is that I cannot use the Arch repository. Every time I try to, it brings up a "no address record" error. I have configured my network interface properly and can ping www.google.com and receive a whole load of crap. Definitely working.
Whats wrong?

The second problem is that the boot-up process hangs for a very long time at "Starting Network." This make my boot of Arch just as slow as *buntu! WTF? Whats wrong there? Aside from that, I am unhappy that my Ethernet card is not detected but thats another question. The only ting I am pleased with right now is the speed of the system, and the fact that I used 4 different file systems on 7 different partitions without a hitch.
