Ubuntu :: Display Configuration - Second Video Card Is Not Recognized?

May 16, 2011

First, my set-up -Intel i5 quad-core CPU 16GB RAM.Two Radeon HD5450 video cards, each with two monitors.Multi-boot - Windows7, Ubuntu 10.04.2 and Ububtu 10.04.2(not a typo, the second instance is for experiments)Both the 10.04's have the proprietary ATI video drivers.

On the first set-up, everything works beautifully.All four monitors are alive, and configured with Xinerama as a single large desktop.In the second Ubuntu 10.04 set-up, I have two problems -The second video card is not recognized -it shows up as an unrecognized card.Of the two monitors connected to it, only one is detected, with a resolution of 640x480, not the 1920x1080 the first set-up sees.When I try and switch to the virtual terminal - ctl-alt-F1, I get a blank screen.The terminal is alive and well - I can log in, and enter commands which are executed. For example, when I enter 'ls -l > dir.txt', I see a 'dir.txt' file in my home folder; nothing shows on the screen.how I got the first set up to work!I have tried copying the xorg.conf from the first (working) set-up to the second, but still no joy.The Grub GFXMODE and GFXPAYLOAD are common to both the set-ups, so that can't be the difference.

Slackware :: Consoles Don't Display Any Output

Feb 6, 2011

I am using a 64-bit Slackware 13.1 distro (I chose 64 by mistake, to be honest, as I know there's less trouble with a 32-bit distro) and I have some problems with my consoles (in text mode). After changing the runlevel in ininittab to graphic mode (4), I can't enter any of my consoles. Actually, only ctrl+alt F1 shows some output, regarding the graphic mode (I'm currently using KDE4, the default for slackware 13.1) and F6 is the only normal consoles I have access to. However, if I log out and log in (with another user, maybe) there's no output anywhere (not on F1, neither on F6).

General :: Slackware - KDE Doesnt Display NIC Inferfaces?

Mar 10, 2011

Alright, so I have Slackware 13.1 x86 running almost perfect. My wireless and wired Ethernet seem to be working great; however, System Settings >> Network Settings >> Network Settings does not display any information except for the "Domain Name System" tab. In fact pretty much everything is grayed out. Kinda odd, right? As root "$ ifconfig -a" lists both eth0 and eth1 along with pertinent info like IP-addy, MAC, etc. So the cards are definitely detected by the base system. Oh yea, and wpa_cli lists eth1 (my Intel 2200bg wireless card) as an available adapter. However, wireshark does not list anything either. I cannot begin super-happy-fun-time analysis with wireshark unless i can select a given adapter. here is the relevant entry of my rc.inet1.conf

Code:
# Config information for eth0:
#IFNAME[0]="Marvel Wired'
IPADDR[0]=""
NETMASK[0]=""
USE_DHCP[0]="yes"
DHCP_HOSTNAME[0]=""

[Code]...

I thought maybe i needed to declare an IFNAME for the adapter and that would be what Network Settings or Wireshark detected but doing so just killed my network so i commented them out.

Slackware :: Firefox Default Fonts Will Not Display On Webpages?

Feb 12, 2010

Recently I was creating an image in GIMP when I needed to add a new font. I went to my mounted XP drive and copied the file I wanted over into /usr/X11R6/share/fonts/TTF then I went to the font installer as root and installed the font system wide. After that I reloaded GIMP and the font was available. A little while later I went to browse the internet and when I loaded up firefox, it showed a properly formatted and spaced page with no text on it at all. If I highlighted a line, the invisible text would copy to the clipboard properly and I could read it that way. I figured it might've been a just a FF issue, but when I loaded up Seamonkey, I wound up with the same problem. I'm using Firefox 3.0.16 and Seamonkey 2.0.1. I tried going into the preferences and changing the default font, but no matter what I change it to, it doesn't fix it. Slack 1.2 running kernel 2.6.27.31-smp. I use slapt-get to stay up to date and as far as I can tell i have the latest patches and pkgs.

Code:

bash-3.1$ fc-cache -rv
/usr/share/fonts/OTF: caching, new cache contents: 23 fonts, 0 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/TTF: caching, new cache contents: 91 fonts, 0 dirs

Slackware :: No Mouse Pointer After Changing Display Resolution In KDE?

Feb 16, 2010

after successfully installing Slackware 13, I immediately installed other packages mainly to solve display/freezing issues(see below), I noticed that every time I try to change the display resolution - both from the 'system -> system settings' and from the "plasmoid" -

my mouse cursor would disappear.

now I know it's on the pointer, and not the mouse - I can move the mouse and see "mouse-over" activity, and based on seeing this, even clicking(both left and right) still has effect. In fact, if I were patient enough, I could navigate through my desktop.

note:

I have a Intel 82865g integrated graphics controller, had issues after installing, so I upgraded to the 2.6.32.3 kernel and installed:

fx86-video-intel-2.9.0
libdrm ? 17 ?

I should see:

Slackware :: Doesn't Start..xsession.errors Claim It Can't Open Display?

Jan 8, 2010

with slackware 13.0 for one user xfce4 hangs and doesn't start..xsession.errors claim it can't open display. It works fine for other users. Also if I access the machine in question as the same user but remotely using remote X (X-terminal on my LAN) it works fine.Sometimes if I wait and count to 30 it comes up but a lot of the features don't work.During the last week have posted this question on the compuserve linux forum and also in the xfce site forum with no solutions.seems there must be something in that user's directory which is hanging it up. I keep the same /home/users directory on a separate partition so when I upgrade for new versions of slackware the /home/users remain the same - I symlink home to that partition so upgrades are somewhat seemless.
