Slackware :: Strange Background Display Bug In KDE
Jul 7, 2011
I'm using Slackware64 with the KDE desktop. Sometimes, when I start KDE, I have a strange display bug that affects the background. Not a serious bug, only annoying. Here's a screenshot to get the idea: [URL] Usually, it's sufficient to logout and log back in to restore things to normal.
My mouse cursor has acquired some strange background image showing what looks to be paragraphs of chinese glyphs (they are too small to make out clearly). This background image is contained in rougly a 1 inch square with the mouse cursor hot spot in the upper left-hand corner. The mouse cursor is visible, but whatever is under those glyphs is covered.
I've tried the mouse configuration gui -- but it says nothing of background images for the mouse. I've also deleted and recreated my xconfig.org file to see if that somehow got mangled. I've been searching the web for a couple of hours, but cant seem to find anything related to my problem.
I've been working on getting Linux on this iBook I have. It's running fine HOWEVERThe screen is split up in a rather strange way.I've drawn a diagram, but I can't post it due to the fact I haven't made 15 posts yet.I have a full working desktop in the top left.About 2 inches of the right are just black, and I can't move my mouse over it.Under the address bar, there is a mysterious white line, that extends into the black.Under that, there is the top 2 inches of my desktop being shown again.
I've a strange regression with Slackware 13.37 and Emacs. In Slackware 13.1 (and all previous versions since I started with Slackware 11), Emacs in X-windows looks good regardless of the window manager. I've attached a show of Emacs in Slackware 13.1 to show what I mean. Notice the nice logo and fonts. In Slackware 13.37, the logo is missing and the fonts are different in KDE (and Window Maker). The logo is back and the fonts look good in XFCE (and TWM). See the other attachments.
My slackware 13.37 64 with 4 gig ram , has a strange thing in dolphin. My machine runs very well with kDE4.6.1 from alien and no other problems. When I copy files to a folder it does not show , I have to close dolphin and reopen to see those files. If I click on a compressed file and select extract folder here it does the same.
slack 13.37, firefox 14.0 shockwave/flash 10.3r181when i watch a ..... video, even if i close the tab after watching the video, there's a bizarre artifact left over where the video progress bar was. it alters text in other tabs, and alters pixels in pictures in other tabs where the bottom of the ..... viewing window was. when i close the kde session i get a quick glimpse of the video frame that was "left over" from .....
I use Slackware 13.0. I just upgraded from 2.6.32 to 2.6.35. On 2.6.35, the kernel supplying strange non-existant node like hda* and many symlink like cdr cdr0 cdrom cdrom0 etc. Well, i use libata and disable the old ATA driver, so my HDD should only be displayed as sd**. Also, i've checked all the udev rules, and i don't see any SYMLINK entries that would produce that cdr cdr0 links. My 2.6.32 and 2.6.35 config are identical. Everything were working normally on 2.6.32. Btw, i've tried to upgrade to 13.1. Then boot the standard huge.smp kernel. The same problem occured too. And with other problem i get with 13.1, i decided to downgrade to 13.0.
I opened a thread on the general networking section of the forums to discuss about a problem I am experiencing with a newly installed slackware 13.1 (not 64b) on my dell laptop. Basically, the machine is not getting an IP from the dhcp server on my pfsense router. All other machines on my network are still getting IP's fine, and the pfsense box never changed. I can get an IP from the pfsense box by manually loging as root and using /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 eth0 restart (note the argument eth0 necessary to get the ip).
User markush at the link below suggested I open this thread here, I think its a great idea since I believe it is a slackware problem. he also recommended to use tcpdump to diagnose the connection problem. Here's the results:
I issued the dhcp renewal commands in a terminal and monitored the output of tcpdump in a different terminal.
Code: root@xpsm1730:/home/lpallard# /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart Polling for DHCP server on interface eth0: dhcpcd: version 5.2.2 starting dhcpcd: eth0: waiting for carrier dhcpcd: timed out
[Code]....
I believe the router is fine since all other machines are all using slackware 13.1 (one slackware 32bit and the other slackeware 64) and are all handshaking perfectly with the pfsense box.
I also believe the kernel on the faulty machine is OK since I am using the very same kernel(2.6.37) on the machine running slack64 and this machine is also handshaking perfectly with my pfsense box.

I just installed 9.10, and the "File Manager" seems to not be working. I cant get ubuntu to display a background picture on the desktop, and anything I put on the desktop is not selectable. If I try to access anything under the "Places" tab, it tries to open a window, which read "opening whatever" but nothing happens. I can access files via terminal just fine.
I just switched to ion3, been playing around with different window managers. Loving tiled wms! With each wm I run into the same issue, how can I set a root desktop background image with Slackware 13.1
I often use cal command in xterm to get calendar info, is there a better way to dock it into my taskbar, or into background of my windows(blackbox, fvwm, etc).
I like working with light text on black bg in Fluxbox however I need to use Kate editor which has bright white background and dark text. How can I change the background to black?(and the side panel of file list, too)? I presume I need to change the kde theme under Fluxbox. Does anyone know where the config file is and what to change in there if it's not obvious?
I've read about this. Everyone says to use ~/.Xresources or ~/.Xdefaults, and it doesn't work for me. It doesn't do anything at all, in fact. I'm trying to use this:
Code:
XTerm*background: black XTerm*foreground: white
In the ~/.X* files, it won't work. I read that another way of doing it is using
Code:
xrdb -merge .x_settings_file
This will work for me. It's the only thing I can get to work. But when I restart, it will have to be done again. I'm using Slackware 12.2.
Im using FF 3.5.2 and Slackware 12.2. On certain web pages, for instance www.slackware.com, Firefox doesnt display the background image, but instead displays multiple images of the tool bar of Firefox. It doesnt matter if I change the settings to allow third part cookies or if I tell Firefox to get images automatically. When using Konqueror, the web-site(s) appear normal.
the above event usually happens to me when im logged in to xfce my screen suddenly goes black for like 1 sec then my background becomes my background in gnome.. what does this mean? should i remove the gnome or there's some other options i can do to prevent this?
How do I get it to display a different desktop background for each desktop? I'm sure I saw this option somewhere, but I can't find it again.
Secondly, it defaults with 4 desktops in a 2X2 grid layout. I changed it to 2, then back to 4 and now it has 4 desktops in a linear layout (1x4). How can I change it back to 2X2?
Anyone know why each time I boot up the machine the cube background image goes away and the background colour is left. This image i am placing is in Apparency/Skydome
I have installed SW13 and I cannot seem to be able to configure my display resolution. Under windows I have it configure as 1440by900 pixels, colors = 32bit, chip = intel 965 express. Under SW the resolution = 800by600. I have try to change the resolution size but have not been able to do it. I try to run the xorgconfig command but is not installed on the computer.
When trying to run X apps from terminal command line I getCannot open X display `:0.0'error.I tried export DISPLAY=0.0What do I need to do to permently fix this problem?
I am using a 64-bit Slackware 13.1 distro (I chose 64 by mistake, to be honest, as I know there's less trouble with a 32-bit distro) and I have some problems with my consoles (in text mode). After changing the runlevel in ininittab to graphic mode (4), I can't enter any of my consoles. Actually, only ctrl+alt F1 shows some output, regarding the graphic mode (I'm currently using KDE4, the default for slackware 13.1) and F6 is the only normal consoles I have access to. However, if I log out and log in (with another user, maybe) there's no output anywhere (not on F1, neither on F6).
what is the configuration file responsible for the X system !!! i did not have /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and the X server was pretty good and i can open it through "startx" command.i created xorg.config by "xorgsetup" program but i could not feel any change. i wanna reconfigure my display driver to be sure it's functioning at maximum performance.
Alright, so I have Slackware 13.1 x86 running almost perfect. My wireless and wired Ethernet seem to be working great; however, System Settings >> Network Settings >> Network Settings does not display any information except for the "Domain Name System" tab. In fact pretty much everything is grayed out. Kinda odd, right? As root "$ ifconfig -a" lists both eth0 and eth1 along with pertinent info like IP-addy, MAC, etc. So the cards are definitely detected by the base system. Oh yea, and wpa_cli lists eth1 (my Intel 2200bg wireless card) as an available adapter. However, wireshark does not list anything either. I cannot begin super-happy-fun-time analysis with wireshark unless i can select a given adapter. here is the relevant entry of my rc.inet1.conf
Code: # Config information for eth0: #IFNAME[0]="Marvel Wired' IPADDR[0]="" NETMASK[0]="" USE_DHCP[0]="yes" DHCP_HOSTNAME[0]=""
[Code]...
I thought maybe i needed to declare an IFNAME for the adapter and that would be what Network Settings or Wireshark detected but doing so just killed my network so i commented them out.
I'm trying to span my desktop across my 2 displays. I tried to edit xorg.conf-vesa to no avail.
Here is xrandr:
bash-3.1$ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 1920 x 1600 HDMI-0 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 510mm x 287mm 1920x1080 60.0*+ 1680x1050 59.9
[code]....
I have attached a portion of xorg.conf-vesa and xrandr --verbose.
I run my conky as one bar at the top of the screen (Ratpoison). It is frustrating when % values jump between 0->10% for example and then the entire bar shifts. How can I make it display 000% 010% 100%?
If I click on the clock in the system tray, KDE presents me with the calendar December 2010... if I try to change the display by clicking on the month and selecting Jan, KDE crashes!
after i installed compiz, and enable compiz. a problem happen... my firefox (3.6.3) display it's kinda odd, it's like the firefox graphics has been cutted every i move to another tab, this problem occur too when i scroll the web page (the graphics cutted).
Using Fluxbox, have tried this in XFCE and KDE. Chinese characters display properly in whatever browser I use online. I do need to see some in the file manager and this is not working.
I have installed the following chinese display files from Slack -
