Fedora :: Modules Not Being Compiled With 14 Kernel Compile?

May 8, 2011

I am attempting to compile the linux-2.6.35.13 kernel from kernel.org to use with an installation of Fedora 14 (2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64). I've done this before with different kernel versions for older versions of Fedora, but I've encountered a new problem this time. Whenever I get to the "make install" step, I get the following:Quote:

sh /home/user/testing/source/linux-2.6.35.13/arch/x86/boot/install.sh 2.6.35.13 arch/x86/boot/bzImage
System.map "/boot"

Slackware :: ERROR: No /lib/modules/2.6.33.4-smp Kernel Modules Tree Found For Kernel "2.6.33.4-smp" ... For Mkinitrd - Encrypted Installation

Jul 22, 2010

I am trying to setup Slacware 13.1 x86_64 to a encrypted partition. I used the README_CRYPT.TXT howto : [URL] At the step when I create an initrd.gz I get this error: Quote: ERROR: No /lib/modules/2.6.33.4-smp kernel modules tree found for kernel "2.6.33.4-smp"

I tried to look into the directory and there was only modules under 2.6.44.3. So I tried to change the command into: Quote: mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.33.4 -m ext3 -f ext3 -r cryptroot -C /dev/sda2

This command was successful, but I don't know if this is alright. I made the changes in lilo.conf, add initrd = initrd.gz. This is all on unencrypted /boot partition. The boot=/dev/sda1 I also set for the unencrypted boot partition. When I boot the system I get a kernel panic:

General :: Apache2 Compiled Modules Missing?

Jan 22, 2011

i couldn't find anything on google. So here is my problem: It's Debian GNU/Linux. I installed apache2 a few weeks ago, but due to some work I couldn't go on installing further things. Today I installed php5 and mysql. Everything seemed to work fine. I loaded an existing MyBB Board and WordPress Site onto the server and imported the mysql db. I can open the sites and login. However, there are problems. I think my problems are due to the compiled modules. Some are missing. I checked several sites. They all give me this listing:

Code:
apache2 -l
Compiled in modules:
core.c
mod_access.c

[Code]...

What should I do? How can I get the missing modules? Do I have to install apache again (how? remove - install? install what?)? Step-by-step instructions would be kind, because I don't know a lot about unix systems.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Unable To Start VirtualBox Kernel Modules - Error Stopping VirtualBox Kernel Modules

Mar 23, 2011

I was trying to install VirtualBox through the YaST > Software Management but it is not working, someone in the forum told me that I have to download the OSE version and do it manual way. Finally I am able to start up VB but not able to use the network connection. Thus I am trying to do this:

/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. I get this error:

When I type dmesg, it shows me a bunch of info which I don't know what should look for. When I type modprobe vboxnetflt, I get the error: FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-default/updates/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format. what should I do in order to get my VB to be able to connect to the internet?

Fedora Installation :: New Kernel Will Not Boot (Modules)

Mar 26, 2011

The new kernel upgrade on Fedora 14 will not boot. lib/modules do not exist is the message. Grub was adjusted to match the old kernel, and the new kernel when booting says lib/modules do not exist. The old kernel has twice as many modules as the new kernel in lib/modules. How do I get the new modules to install so I can boot with the new kernel then? Should I reinstall the new kernel?

Fedora :: VMware Player Not Compling Kernel Modules / Fix It?

Aug 4, 2011

System. fedora 15, fully updated Kernel 2.6.40-4.fc15.X86_64
64 bit. Gnome 3

The other day I installed VMware Player on the system when the Kernel was 2.6.38.8-32.fc15.x86_64. On running VMware player after installing the kernel-headers and gcc files the program ran fine (I did not try to install the VMware Tools). I also have not loaded the guess OS as yet.

toady I did and update in which the kernel was updated. I checked to ensure the Kernel-headers were also updated for the latest kernel.

After rebooting the machine the running kernel was then 2.6.40-4.fc15.x86_64. I then tried to start VMware Player. It indicated because the kernel was changed it needed to install new kernel modules, OK, It open the module screen and then crashed.

The log says it can not compile Vmmon which is the first module. it does not go any further.

Tried to installed a new copy of VMware Player over the old one but this only resulted in the same error messages.

Any ideas on how to fix this.

General :: 'make Menuconfig' To Make These Files Modules Rather Than Compiled Elements?

Feb 25, 2011

I need to modify fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c to make my modifications. I cannot find any options in 'make menuconfig' to make these files modules rather than compiled elements. I'm thinking these cannot be modules because the file system won't work without open.c and read_write.c. Is this correct - I cannot compile fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c as modules, only as compiled elements? Or, is there some way for a module to overwrite these routines when the module is installed and re-enable the routines when the module is removed?

Fedora :: Compile A Vanilla Kernel On The Easy/lazy Way?

Apr 29, 2010

I thought I would give some instructions on how I compile my kernels. My long-time windows user parts trader recently asked me how to compile a kernel on Fedora. He was confused with all the tutorials requiring you to build an RPM, so I showed him how I do it, the standard/easy/lazy way. Before I start, here are a couple things I assume. I assume you are a Fedora user and that you are NOT in text mode, but in GNOME. I also assume you realize that this can take up to SIX HOURS on an old Pentium 3 1.3Ghz. Remember that some proprietary drivers as well as some free ones are not included in the kernel, so make sure you don't delete your existing one.

First get the dependencies you need.
su -c "yum -y install gcc ncurses-devel"

Next get the kernel source. I use 2.6.33.3 as an example. To download it, click here.Extract it by right-clicking on the file and then choosing extract here. This will take about five minutes. Now open a terminal, become root, and cd to the directory linux-2.6.33.3. It is important to cd here and not to the kernel directory inside of there, even though make has an extra variable that specifies there.

Now we need to configure the kernel before we build it with make O=kernel menuconfig. It will take a couple minutes to set up, then you will be presented with a cheap psuedo-gui in your terminal. Just select exit and yes to save your config. You usually don't need to change anything here.

Ready to compile and install? Remember this can take up to six hours, and your machine may become VERY slow. It is not recommended that you attempt to use your machine with this in progress. OK then. As root, in the same directory, type:

make O=kernel && make O=kernel modules_install install. This will compile the kernel and install the kernel and it's modules. Done? Now change the kernel and initrd in your bootloader to match the new kernel. If you ever want to reuse the same source code folder, use make mrproper to clean things up and build it again.
