Debian :: Freezing On First Boot At Loading Initial Ramdisk?
Apr 22, 2011I just performed my very first linux install. I used the Debian 6.0.1a iso. I made it all the way through the installation with no problems whatsoever. I was able to select the version from the grub screen, still everything seemed to be going fine...then it froze. I attached an image of the screen where the system froze:
Its basically the loading screen, times 4! At the top left in case its too hard to read, it says: Loading Linux 2.6.32-5-686, then...Loading initial ramdisk... This sounds all fine and dandy to me but it freezes here. I've tried searching the forums and google for an answer and have come up empty...I'm sure someone has had this problem but it seems to be a tough thing to search for. Would appreciate all the help I can get! Oh and btw, here are the system specs:
circa 2001ish Dell Dimension 4300
P4 1.4ghz
256 ram
onboard video etc...

Jun 24, 2011I've just installed Debian 6.0.1a on a HP Proliant ML115, the install seemed to go ok. As it began to start up it 'Grub Bootloader' loaded then on the screen after the bootup froze at 'Loading initial ramdisk'

Debian Installation :: Jessie Stuck At Loading Initial Ramdisk - UEFI Mode
Oct 2, 2014So I managed to install Debian Jessie on a MSI G70 2PE Apache Pro that came with Windows 8.
First I partitioned some space on the laptop. Then I put on the net install cd for Debian and installed it on UEFI mode. It installed correctly.
Now I'm on Grub and when Debian tries to boot it gets stuck on "Loading initial ramdisk". The cursor under it doesn't even blink. The only way to get out of there is by Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Secure Boot is turned off. Fast boot is also off. If I try to boot on recovery mode gets stuck all the same.
The options on my grub are
Debian GNU/Linux
Advanced options for Debian GNU/Linux
Windows Boot Manager (UEFI on /dev/sda2)
System Setup.
If I choose the Windows option, Windows boots, no problem.
If I choose the edit option for the Debian entry this is what it shows

What is happening and what should I try to make this work? Could it be a graphics card issue since this computer has a Nvidia Gpu?
Debian :: Initial Ramdisk Freeze - One Time Yes And One Time No
Jan 13, 2016I have a strange problem on my new installation of Debian "Stretch".
After "loading initial ramdisk" the pc freeze, but if I reboot it, then it doesn't freeze and so I could work.
So for work each time I have to boot and reboot the pc; the second time the pc works.

Mar 30, 2011I updated my netbook to the last incarnation of slackware-current yesterday.
My problem is now, that it is no more able to start the ash shell of the initial ramdisk i am using. The ramdisk was created with the latest version of the mkinitrd script.

And the error happens when the ash from the initial ramdisk is intended to be started. Simply copying the /lib/libc.so.6 stuff (symlink to the real so and the real so) enables to ash to be started but later cryptsetup fails to load.
The initial ramdisk from mid-January i used before did not have such a problem. What i also see is, that the failing ramdisk has a size of only 16k blocks. The one from mid-January was bigger.

Jun 1, 2011On Debian Etch I used to understand how to change boot kernel parameters with Grub. You could just edit menu.lst.
With the newer Grub in Squeeze I am without a clue! I want to set up a ramdisk, say 128 Megs in size, and add that to my boot parameters so that it is created every time the machine starts. Do I set something in /etc/default/grub ?

Feb 1, 2010I have built a kernel with a ramdisk(ramdisk.image.gz) included. Also in the kernel command line I specified root=/dev/ram0. I am trying to use this ramdisk to load a loopback file as the root filesystem off a fat partition. This is /sbin/init from the ramdisk.

All of a sudden, on boot, I get this error: "loading initial ramdisk error: file not found" If I hit 'E' at the menu entry, I can scroll all the way to the end of the boot command, and it appears that the last 'c' on 'generic' is missing from the kernel name. If I add the c and hit ctrl-x it boots fine. The grub.cfg appears to be correct, it has the full generic spelled out.

Jul 6, 2010I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.
I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.
I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.
So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.
However, just in case someone else runs into this:
1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.
2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)

I am using Grub2. When I rebooted the new kernel was in the grub list all right. But booting from that kernel fails with no errors or warning. The screen just goes blank. The disk usage indicator LED also doesn't glow which I guess means that the kernel isn't being read from the disk. I rebooted using my older kernel and it booted properly. Then, when I listed my /boot directory, I noticed that there was no initrd.img for 2.6.39. kernel in there, which I think is the problem.

Then I checked the output of the db to see what I did not have on my filesystem that db was searching for (according to the default policy when tripwire was installed), I then changed my default clear text policy file accordingly and used twadmin to generate a new tw.pol file.
Next I come grinding to a halt after this (assuming the next thing is to update the policy in tripwire right? )

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot Into The Xen Kernel After Initial?
Apr 17, 2010I'm trying to work with Xen for the first time,if I mess up some of the lingo here or if I don't quite make sense. I've been running openSUSE 11.2 since it first was released, and after an initial problem with my video driver, its been working great. I tried to install Xen today, and after the install appeared to complete successfully, it asked me to reboot and boot into the Xen kernel. When I did this, although the system booted up to the command line, it didn't launch KDE. When I try to start KDE manually it tells me that it "Can't connect to X server".
This seems to be roughly the same problem I had when I first installed openSUSE but I can't for the life of me remember how in god's name I fixed it.
General :: Compiled A Kernel With TUN/Bridge Support But Cannot Find /dev/net/tun?
Jan 20, 2011I compiled my own kernel with tun/tap and bridge support. Both modules load fine at boot time (I could read that in the dmesg output). Now I want to use it, and the /dev/net/tun node is not there, so my application gives that error. I'm trying to bridge openvpn connections. Is it possible that udevd is not doing his work?
PS: I'm on a WD MyBook World Ed NAS device. It's ARM, so I cross compiled the kernel from my debian linux machine. I also installed debian on the NAS.)

General :: Nvidia Driver Is Not Working After Using A Self Compiled Kernel (2.6.38)?
Mar 19, 2011About a month ago, I decided to go deeper in my Linux knowledge. I've been reading a lot and found out that Arch linux would be my learning distro. As I was installing Arch, it was a pain at first but I really learned a lot which I would never ever learn with Mint. Now I decided to take a step further is which "compiling your own kernel".
MY PROBLEM:
Everything was smooth in my Arch for a 2 weeks until I decided to compile my own kernel. I currently have a Nvidia GTX 460 1GB card.
BTW, the method I used to install nvidia with 2.6.37 was

pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils
and that worked with all of the .37 kernels (-1 -2 -3 -4) which was download from kernel.org.
When I compiled the .38 (using the same .config of .37), it just boots up to the terminal (not loading gdm). However, I could still login by typing my username and password. So I've checked dmesg of both .37 and .38 and noticed that the Nvidia driver is not loaded in .38.
I tried reinstall it by running pacman and it doesn't do anything. It was thinking of uninstalling nvidia and nvidia-utils but there are so many dependencies conflicts (like screensaver, compiz, etc).
Since, I didn't want to mess up my .37 install, I just grabbed an old HDD and installed from scratch again. This time, I compiled the .38 kernel first (without gui) and then installed nvidia nvidia-utils. It was the same problem.
With this observation, I'm concluding that the nvidia and nvidia-utils from pacman is not compatible with .38.
I've read that I have to wait for nvidia to release a driver that will be compatible with the .38 kernel. Is that true? Does it mean I have to wait for nvidia/nvidia-utils to be updated from pacman? How would I know when it is updated?
I've also read about nouveau, but I guess that is not for me because it doesn't support 3D.
Is there a work around for me to use nvidia/nvidia-utils with .38?
Is nvidia and nvidia-utils proprietary drivers? What is the difference with these two and the one you download directly from nvidia?
First of all, I apologize for the bombardment of questions. As you can tell, I'm so clueless on how nvidia drivers work on linux in general (since it was spoon fed by mint) and I really would love to learn about this is a deeper level. Could someone please explain to me (LAYMANS terms) how nvidia works (and possibly a solution to my issue).
EDIT: Additional info - I have a netbook that also runs arch. It uses an Intel GMA integrated video chip which I used "xf86-video-intel" from pacman and I believe since it is open source, it works with .38 fine. So does that mean if you use an open source driver, it will work with all other kernels?
CentOS 5 :: Procedure To Restore Initial Installed Configuration?
Jun 18, 2009I am looking for a procedure to recover the initial installed state of my system with out over writing user data areas. The install procedure has the phrase "will remove all linux partitions" which interpret to mean data partitions, not just /bin and /. Additional background - Was attempting to build a 32 bit cross compile of Mozilla/Firefox on a x86_64 configuration and had a conflict with libgl. Online advice was to remove duplicate libgls from the system (that was bad advice). This led to running yum update.
When I restarted the system I know longer had wireless networking, ntfs mounts and possibly other features I had installed. Further, attempts to update, re-install, erase and reinstall have had no effect on the situation. My assumption is that I need to start with a clean install - which will be about 10-20 hours to reset all the additions I made. But I don't see another solution.
