My computer is ThinkPad SL400 and the wireless card is AR5001 wireless network adapter (Atheros Communications Inc.). I now use slackware13.37. I can't make the wireless card work and the indicator light is always out. In Windows7, the wireless card can work. Doesn't the kernel 2.6.37 support ath5k? I find the webpage [URL], but I don't know whether I should download the relevant driver or the kernel has already possessed the driver and the only thing to do is activate it.

I have an older laptop (Dell Inspiron 4100) on which I have installed a minimal Slackware system, and have just managed to get wireless working by using a Linksys Wireless-G card (WPC54GS) and installing the b43 packages from the SlackBuilds site.
Unfortunately, I am experiencing system freezes ... and if my Google searches are correct, these are related to the firmware driver (b43 stuff).
I wonder if anyone can recommend a good wireless card that works with Slackware out of the box ?

After doing a reconfigure of my wrt54gl router, trying to activate WEP encryption, and then finding WICD wouldn't connect, and returning to the original config on the router, now wicd won't reconnect the wireless card. Here's the wicd.log entry from the attempt to connect:

Hi I have istalled a D-Link wireless adaptor - with the help of this forum.
It is up and running - the light flashes and lsusb identifies it correctly, so does iwconfig.
I can, however, not connect to the network, and I noticed the following errors on boot up.
Trigering udev events: /sbin/udevadm trigger -- type: failed /etc/rc.d/rc.M: wlan0 Error for wireless request; "Set Nickname" (8BIC) information; "Any ESSID" Set failed on device wlan0; operation not supported.
Lower down I get
Starting rt2870 drivers . . . /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1: wlan0 information "Any ESSID"
Error for wireless request "Set Nickname" (8BIC) set failed on device wlan0 : Operation not supported
I have on two occassions seen sugstions to use wicd, but how do I use that?

i'm running slack 13.37. my machine has a "generic" wireless card which is currently sitting idle in it, since i used a wired interface for internet and local networking (i used the wireless interface for a while, but for what i need it wasn't a reliable or stable enough connection). my question is, can the idle card be used as a wireless access point on a separate subnet? if so how?

I just installed Slackware 13 with xfce and everything went well (eventually). At first, my wireless didn't work, but then I found /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.conf. Everything was working, and I was happily surfing and downloading packages. But then one day... It just stopped! I tried to ping google, and it could send packets but not receive them.I'm connecting through an unlocked network in my building, so I guess it's DHCP (thats what i set it up with the first time 'round

I'm currently installing Slackware 13.1 on my old Sony VAIO. It's got a wireless card sticking out the side of it, and I just want to make sure I set it all up correctly. I got to the screen where it's asking:
static IP
DHCP
loopback
And I'm not sure which one to pick.

I got ubuntu working fine on my netbook and wanted to play around with opensuse. I have it installed and everything works fine except my wireless connection. I have updated everything since the installation through a wired connection, that didn't help. I have read the stickies, but to be honest, I'm so new to this stuff I'm kinda lost. So my wireless network has a WEP encryption and I have entered that password as a 64 HEX Key in the Wireless Manager widget. It connects to the network and says is labeled as active, however there is still the yellow exclamation shield next to the connection. Firefox and other apps don't have access to the internet.

System Information:openSUSE v11.2 32-bitdesktop: KDE 4.x (.3 I think)Background info: Installed openSUSE 11.2 on an old HP laptop this morning. I've been trying to set up my wireless connection since. After 2-ish hours of searchingupport forums, I managed to use network manager to connect to my home wireless network via WEP, I will say now that I've had lots of trouble.
I've finally been able to connect to my network, to a point. The NetworkManager in openSUSE says that the wireless connection is active. I can verify this by saying that on the other conputers in my house (winXP, win7, and Ubuntu v9) I have been able to ping this openSUSE computer and my router recognizes it as part of the network. Here is where the problem arises: I cannot access the internet from the openSUSE machine, with a domain name or by trying to type in an ip address, and I cannot ping other computers on my network with it.

This thread is not so much looking for a 'solution' as it is looking for some 'reason why', as I now have it working.I have just inherited a Gateway 509GE - P4 3.0GHZ / 1GB RAM / 200GB SATA WD2000JD HD. It is circa 2005 hardware. The previous owner had tried to install Mandriva after windows began to choke on accumulated garbage, then tried to revert to XP, both of which appeared to install but neither would boot. He decided to just get a new box and gave me this one.I ran Memtest86 and found a bad DIMM and replaced it.
I repartitioned and formatted, a single ext4 root partition plus 2GB for swap. I completely removed existing partitions including the hidden M$ restore partition and checked disk - all using Gparted Live CD.I put a full Slackware 13 on it, installed with LILO to MBR, rebooted... nothing... "No bootable device found".I booted to install CD and played with Gparted Live CD and everything was there and LILO configured correctly...I tried several times and looked at MBR sector directly - all OK as far as I could tell.
Long story short - as far as I can tell after trying a few things, I finally set the 'active' flag on the extended partition (sda1) and it now boots. But Linux does not care whether a partition is active and I have several boxes - including another with SATA drive that do not have any 'active' partitions. So I conclude this must be a BIOS thing looking for an active partition, but see nothing settable in the BIOS config (in fact very little useful in this machine's BIOS config).Anyway, it is now working but I would like to solicit any useful comments from others. Is it a Gateway thing? (This is my only Gateway box). Is it an SATA thing? Anyone else had to set a Linux partition active to boot

I am running the Ubuntu Netbook Remix and setting up our systems for Active Directory Domain Authentication. When I am hard wired in (ethernet), AD authentication works with no problems using the Likewise-Open software (installed through Ubuntu Software Center). What I want to be able to do is have people authenticate with AD with only a wireless connection. Has anybody done this before?

Has anyone had success in getting likewise open or another tool to allow domain users to log in with wireless networking? I have an issue where GDM comes up, users attempts to log in and gets authentication error. After a few minutes it works. Centrify has the same issue.
I've tried removing network-manager and using /etc/network/interfaces to set up networking, which helps, but there's a 1-3 minute delay before a user may log in for the first time after a reboot. My theory is gdm gets loaded before networking is up. There's got to be a work around for this. Even having gdm just hanging for a minute while it waits for networking would be acceptable.

Just installed Fedora 14 from the Live CD i686 on my Dell Inspiron 1521. I can't connect to the SpeedTouch 585 on either wireless broadcom card or the wired Ethernet card.
I can connect to it from the same Laptop on the Vista which is on dual boot on the same laptop.
Further confusing is that I ran Fedora 14 and connected to another SpeedTouch today.
Already checked the Channel on the wireless nic and it's on the same one as the SpeedTouch.

how to setup an Active/Active Load Balanced and High Available (If one of the nodes is down the system still runs) MySQL cluster. I have found quite a few howto's but I have some things unclear in my mind. I found a few solutions like this one: [URL] or this: [URK] Those are using two or four MySQL nodes, two Load Balancers to avoid a single point of failure but only one MySQL cluster management server. What happens if the MySQL cluster management fails?
I have also found a "MySQL Master-Master Circular Replication" technique but from what I read, with this option there is a chance that conflicts will arise if node A and node B both insert an auto-incrementing key on the same table.

I took the plunge and made a clean install of 10.04 because it sounded cool (and it is, I like it!) and now I'm tied to a wall again I've gone through several of the broadcom wireless card tutorials on the forums and the only thing I've managed to get is a lit up wifi light. It's not detecting an active unsecured network several inches away, that has computers up and running on it... I'm perfectly willing to post more details as needed.

I was just given a dell mini 9. Joy a new toy The SSD has failed, so I installed Slackware -current to a 2GiB SD card. Everything is working fine except I'm worried about killing the flash drive due to excessive read-writes. Not being concerned with persistent storage, I've mounted a couple of dir's to ramfs -
[Code]....
I'd love to mount the entire drive as read only. Then certain directories that need written to as ramfs. However this mini 9 only has 512MiB, and I'm affraid I'll quickly run out of space. I am not using swap. ramfs and tmpfs are new concepts to me. I did a little research, but was hoping for some user input on their experiences.

I have a Acer Revo R3610 nettop on which I installed oS11.3. It has an Atheros AR5001 wireless network adaptor.I'm getting very bad latency and throughput on with this card. In comparison my Thinkpad with Intel card achieves at least 10 times the throughput from the same location. Also when I boot my wifi will come up authenticate and then a few seconds later disconnect and reconnect. I've tried updating the kernel to 2.6.35 as one of the fixes was to improve the performance of the ath5k driver. I'm using wpa2 authentication.
Here are some details:
Code:
mediacentre:~ # /sbin/lspci -nnk
00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: nVidia Corporation MCP79 Host Bridge [10de:0a82] (rev b1)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device [1025:0222]
[code]....
Is there anything else I paste that will help determine the cause of the bad throughput. Browsing the web or copying files across the network is bordering unusable.
