Slackware :: Wireless Card Disappeared After The Kernel Upgrade?
Mar 28, 2010
I have changed kernel to 2.6.33. After that ifconfig command shows only my ethernet card, wireless card have disappeared. What is wrong. In the old kernel everything works fine. I am sure that i have installed wi-fi stuff with kernel.
I've (almost successfully) upgraded my 64-current.
1. It used to be or is? 64-current multilib, however, before the upgrade I commented out any blacklisted packages in slackpkg's blacklist file (including aaa_eflibs)
slackpkg update, install-new, upgrade-all, clean system (removed all the packages that were specified in changelogs.txt as removed)
When started X two things were wrong.
1. XFCE icons disappeared
2. The mouse pointer was going crazy
2. I fixed it by following Eric's advice and created a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-mouse.conf where I put the Input section from my xorg.conf
I'm still at loss when it comes to the icons.
btw, I've reinstalled my nvidia binary blob, somehow it doesn't seem to see it. Does the new Xorg use xorg.conf anymore?
Karmic ( kernel 2.6.31) does not support my TV card:
Code:
~$ lspci -vnn
Multimedia controller [0480]: Philips Semiconductors SAA7131/SAA7133/SAA7135 Video Broadcast Decoder [1131:7133]"1131:7133" is nowhere present in the 2.6.31 SAA7134 cardlist. However, "1131:7133" is supported as card 17 under a different card name within kernel 2.6.33, see

Where do I look for guidance on such a kernel upgrade? My impression is that grub permits booting to an earlier kernel so a boo is recoverable. While not particularly relevant, my card is a Chronos Video Shuttle II.
I am trying to dual boot here (Debian and Windows 7).I am trying to setup server here (trying my hands on first time.)I am getting the following error on the screen when i select to boot from Debian (windows boots up normally when selected in grub) I have attached the image,it states:-Radeon kernel modesetting for r600 or later requires firmware-linux-nonfree
People, there is a tutorial to upgrade the kernel 2.6.38.3(compiling tutorial included =D) to Slackware 13.1??And, this upgrade generate a better performance on system??
can I upgrade the kernel on my slack 12.2 to the version 2.6.29 or higher?I need the kernel must support the KMS mechanism. Why I need KMS? I want to define virtual screen of size greater than 2048 x 2048. Why I need so huge virtual screen? To run two-display configuration on my dual-head Intel graphic card. At the moment I can set max 2048 x 2048 virtual screen which is not enough for my two displays:LCD of notebook has 1400 x 1050 resolution, and external LCD panel 1280 x 1024. At this moment a part of desktop is on both displays. Small part but causes some problems, and at this moment only awesome (really awesome) window manager can handle this configuration.
My computer is ThinkPad SL400 and the wireless card is AR5001 wireless network adapter (Atheros Communications Inc.). I now use slackware13.37. I can't make the wireless card work and the indicator light is always out. In Windows7, the wireless card can work. Doesn't the kernel 2.6.37 support ath5k? I find the webpage [URL], but I don't know whether I should download the relevant driver or the kernel has already possessed the driver and the only thing to do is activate it.
I'm using asus usb n-11 wireless adapter.Default kernel module drivers/staging/rt2870sta.ko hasn't id of my adapter. Please add this two strings to next kernel release
I upgrade my slackware to slackware-current. But, when I look /etc/rc.d/rc.modules, it's still symlink to old kernel. Is this normal? Or i must change the symlink manually?
I was running 2.6.35 without any errors. I decided to upgrade to .4 today, used the same config. After i rebooted into the newly compiled kernel i got these errors on boot..
Code: Mounting non-root local filesystems: ntfs-3g: Failed to access volume '/dev/sdc1': No such file or directory ntfs-3g 2010.3.6 integrated FUSE 27 - Third Generation NTFS Driver Configuration type 1, XATTRS are on, POSIX ACLS are off Copyright (C) 2005-2007 Yura Pakhuchiy

I did a complete disk check and it appears to be fine. Then i booted in the default kernel that comes with slackware 13.1 and walla..No errors! What could be the problem? Did someone experience the same issue?
How you doing all? I've my Slackware 13 box. Recently, I have upgraded to -current, and while the upgrade I noticed that my connection went down while it was downloading the new kernel. I had doubts that it got damaged.
Code: slackpkg upgrade-all and found every thing is up to date. While upgrading, the system asked me to run lilo, and I did. But after rebooting, I got the (Kernel Panic) error. I logged back in using setup disk, and the chroot to my original system root directory. I removed the current Kernels, and now I need to re-install it.. there I'm stuck. Slackpkg isn't working because the box is not connecting to the internet. or links is more than appreciated since I'm not geek enough to sort it by my own. Also few googling didn't set me up with a solution so far.
I noticed that slapt-get excludes a lot of package titles based on aaa, glibc, and kernel. I've been wondering why, and haven't been able to find any definitive answers... Anyone here have any ideas on why that is? My Slackware installation is currently kernel 2.6.29.6 (I think) and the newest available on the official repositories is 2.6.32.5 (or something like that).
When I put in slapt-get --upgrade it spits out about 15 packages that are excluded that it won't upgrade. Now, I know I can remove the exclusions by editing the slapt-get configuration file, but I don't want to if it's going to screw something up. So my question is: Is there a reason those are excluded? Is it unsafe to upgrade the kernel with slapt-get?
my name is jackson and I use the slackware 13, I am learning now, and I have a problem with my wireless conection, I dont get to active my wireless card what I can do to active my wireless function in slackware 13 with lspci comannd I can see is a broadcom wireless controller but I dont get to active
I upgraded to a new(er) soundcard this morning on my Slack 13.1 desktop box. I ran alsoconf and got sound working in everything but Firefox flash. It's not specifically a flash problem; flash sound works just fine in Konqueror. It's a Firefox issue. I created the following login script in order to try and force the new card to be recognized as the default:
Code: bash-4.1$ cat .asoundrc pcm. !default { type hw card 1 } ctl. !default { type hw card 1 }
I am having some issues getting the broadcom sta driver installed on Kernels 2.6.36 up through 2.6.38.
Before I continue, I'll list my specs Release: Xubuntu 10.04.2 LTS (64-Bit) Wireless Card: Broadcom BCM4328 Kernel: 2.6.38-x (Any version), and 2.6.36 and above
EDIT: Yes! Yes! I got it to work, for those that are having issues, install this packages. Disregard that it says that there is an older version available in a software. The bcmwl-kernel-source for Natty works on Lucid![URL]... Install one of these and check your Hardware Drivers, they will probably say that the Broadcom STA driver is installed but not in use. If you then proceed to restart it should be up and running, this way you can use kernels 2.6.36+ and still use the Broadcom STA driver!
I have a zyxel dsl (usb) moden, which needs a firmware portion to work, called cxacru-fw.bin.
I have been using this modem using with at least two different slackware distributions, even when the atm drivers were not included in the kernel.
Presently I am using slackware 13.0, with the vmlinuz-huge-smp-2.6.29.6-smp kernel.
I downlowded the 2.6.34 kernel, because I need it for a new webcam, compiled and installed it, and oops! the modem does not work anymore.
I am pretty sure I have configured the kernel correctly; dmesg tells me the modem is recognized by the kernel, as it is with the previous one, but the firmware is not loaded, because the DSL led remains off.
I attach the kernel configuration lines:
I have tried forcing the kernel to load the firmware, using but it didn't work either.
I just did a new install of slack 13.1 and i cant seem to be able to get my wireless card up. my system is a new ish dell laptop,a vostro 3700 to be honest im not even really sure where to start here. if i ifconfig i only get my ethernet and my loopback and if i "iwconfig" i just get told that i have no wireless extensions. yeah not sure what else to add.
I've got an old Compaq Armada laptop (850 mhz PIII processor, 512mb RAM, 30GB HD, DVD ROM) that I've been running OpenSUSE 11.1 on in a dual boot configuration with WinXP for almost a year. I've downloaded and burned a LiveCD of OpenSUSE 11.2 and booted the computer with it. Very impressive. I want to install it on the HD without doing a clean install. That is, I want to replace 11.1 and keep the WinXP partition intact. My biggest trepidation is getting the wireless card configured again. It was a bear the first time. Is there a way to update OpenSUSE without losing those settings?
As an introduction to the problem I'm having: For a long time, I've been on 9.04 and my wireless worked quite happily. Then when I upgraded to 9.10, to my despair I found that my laptop no longer detects my wireless driver! Before I go on, I should also say I'm rather inexperienced with Ubuntu in general, despite having used it for quite some time.
Anyway, onto the informational part: I'm using a Compaq Presario CQ40. According to lspci, my wireless network card details are as follows:
Code: 03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01) lsusb shows the following: Code: Bus 003 Device 002: ID 03f0:171d Hewlett-Packard Wireless (Bluetooth + WLAN) Interface [Integrated Module]
I am writing this using the 2.6.31-17 generic kernel after rebooting and selecting NOT to use the 2.6.31-18 kernel which was just installed. The newer kernel would not recognize/activate my Atheros AR2418 wireless adapter and, when I connected to the ethernet and did updates, there were no hardware drivers available. I haven't needed proprietary drivers since I upgraded to 9.04 and 9.10 works fine with older kernel.
I have an older laptop (Dell Inspiron 4100) on which I have installed a minimal Slackware system, and have just managed to get wireless working by using a Linksys Wireless-G card (WPC54GS) and installing the b43 packages from the SlackBuilds site.
Unfortunately, I am experiencing system freezes ... and if my Google searches are correct, these are related to the firmware driver (b43 stuff).
I wonder if anyone can recommend a good wireless card that works with Slackware out of the box ?
After doing a reconfigure of my wrt54gl router, trying to activate WEP encryption, and then finding WICD wouldn't connect, and returning to the original config on the router, now wicd won't reconnect the wireless card. Here's the wicd.log entry from the attempt to connect:

i'm running slack 13.37. my machine has a "generic" wireless card which is currently sitting idle in it, since i used a wired interface for internet and local networking (i used the wireless interface for a while, but for what i need it wasn't a reliable or stable enough connection). my question is, can the idle card be used as a wireless access point on a separate subnet? if so how?
I upgraded from kernel-2.6.38.6-27.fc15.x86_64 to kernel-2.6.38.7-30.fc15.x86_64. After the upgrade I no longer have a wireless interface in Network Management. I have a broadcom BCM4312, booting the previous kernel solves this problem.
This is my first post here. I'm using Opensuse 11.2 (Gnome)and the inbuilt kernel is 2.6.31.xx. My laptop is having bcm4312 (14e4 : 4315 id)chipset for wireless. (0e:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01) 0e:00.0 0280: 14e4:4315 (rev 01) ) I have read multiple times here in some threads that this kernel will require Broadcom-wl drivers(Tried ,No success with this) And If I want to use b43 drivers , then I need to go for the 2.6.32 kernel (stable one from this release). I've done the same exactly given in some other link -
Steps- make mrproper make menuconfig make dep make clean make bzImage make modules make modules_install
After rebooting it's not showing anything new.Just the boot menu with the older one. Experts, Kindly let me know what I'm missing?
I just installed Slackware 13 with xfce and everything went well (eventually). At first, my wireless didn't work, but then I found /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.conf. Everything was working, and I was happily surfing and downloading packages. But then one day... It just stopped! I tried to ping google, and it could send packets but not receive them.I'm connecting through an unlocked network in my building, so I guess it's DHCP (thats what i set it up with the first time 'round
I'm currently installing Slackware 13.1 on my old Sony VAIO. It's got a wireless card sticking out the side of it, and I just want to make sure I set it all up correctly. I got to the screen where it's asking: static IP DHCP loopback And I'm not sure which one to pick.
