Slackware :: Radio Switch Is Completely Ignored?
Jun 19, 2010
I have a ThinkPad T60 with the AR5008 chipset. I am using a Madwifi driver that I complied from source (this is a fixed driver related to a bug report on this chipset). My Thinkpad has a hardware switch on the front.My problem is that the wireless works whether or not the radio switch is in the on position.I have not been able to figure out how to make the wifi radio turn on and off with the switch.Note that the bluetooth does respect the switch.

I have a new install of Karmic on my system with a flyvideo 3000 tv card installed. My problem is that it doesn't find any radio channels and the input channel is completely wrong. I don't have any sound on gnomeradio and can't find the config files to change the input channel. The only input option available to me is dig1 - can anyone point me in the right direction?
I have already read the Howto for this tv card and changed the device to radio0 in the setup. I have setup tvtime perfectly with sound channel as well as with a 5.1 surround configuration. I am missing my favourite radio channel. and I want to get rid of my windows installations once and for all! Update: I did a system update and some things have changed: the radio tower graphic on gnomeradio is now green (I assume it is getting a signal) but no sound yet.

Fedora (2.6.31.6-162.fc12.x86_64) broken!
Fedora (2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64) broken!
Does anyone have a workaround? In software I can turn the WLAN on, but Bluetooth isn't happening

Initial FC12 install worked great, kernel 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 allowed radio kill switch functionality Fn-F11 for wlan and Fn-F12 for bluetooth.The last two kernels have broken that functionality.

I have slackware 13.0 installed on a dell latitude laptop. I am trying to get the wireless radio to turn on. But when I press the fn + f2 nothing happens( is anything suppose to happen) I tried to edit the rc.inet1.conf file to match my network settings, and then restarted it still nothing. Maybe someone could shed some light my way. I will keep reading through forums to see if I find answer. I also installed the wicd package from the slackware cd, it starts up but shows no networks. Guess the fact that my wireless radio isn't started, that is why I don't see any networks.

I am wondering if any in the Ubuntu community owns a Carmen Car Radio player by Livio Radio. The program to save internet radio to the device is written in Java, however I am not able to run it either using WINE or using Open JDK.
The Carmen Player does work well with Banshee, it is the internet radio that is not working.

record my radio show from a radio I have plugged into my iMac. That's right. For now, I am dual booting on my iMac until I can afford to buy a dedicated PC desktop just for Ubuntu.
I can't believe that there seems to be no way for me to record my shows from my radio. Works fine when I boot into the Mac side and even when I use Ubuntu using VMware Fusion. When I boot into Ubuntu directly, Audio In in the Sound preferences doesn't seem to work. No audio coming through when I try to record from the radio.

I have recently upgraded to -current. I am mostly happy, except for one only tiny thing: my fonts look really, really ugly on OpenOffice.org 3.2.1. All other apps show the fonts decently. I even installed the MS2007 fonts, which properly set up look smoothly antialiased (even in Firefox). But all fonts look horrible on OOO. After doing some research about the cause of this ugliness, I came to found some light here: [URL]...
[code]....
If there is any way to a)disable/kill Xinerama; or b)deuglyfing OOO, I would be interested to know. Any way that doesn't involve recompiling some things (not that I wouldn't want to recompile X without Xinerama support for instance -that could be fun-, but there must be a way to do it without recompiling).

I've got 5 users who share a bunch of virtual Windows XP guests via VRDP (VirtualBox RDP access), and I'm having some problems with managing their NumLock state. They all use rdesktop to access the Windows XP machines. This works very well, as long as all of them have NumLock enabled. If one of them disables it by mistake, and then logs into one of the Windows XP machines, NumLock is disabled and some of the programs they use start to act really weird. This is causing us some grief.
So I'd like to be able to enable NumLock on all the computers (they are all running Slackware 12.2) before X, while X runs and while KDE is running. And when NumLock is enabled for the entire system, thenI'd like to remove the ability to disable NumLock altogether. NumLock should always be enabled for these users, no matter what. It would be really nice if Linux/X/KDE/whatever just honored the BIOS setting, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do that. Oh, and I'd really like if the NumLock LED was ON, so everybody are made aware of the fact that they have NumLock turned on.
ps. I've tried remapping the keys on the numeric pad with xmodmap, but that doesn't solve the problem. The actual NumLock state must be set to avoid problems with the troubled Windows programs.

I installed slackware 13.1 lately to a laptop. its a toshiba satellite m40 185 if it makes any difference. In any case, and while the touchpad works flawlessly, connecting a standard USB mouse to the pc does not power up the mouse (its a microsoft notebook optical mouse) and of course the mouse pointer does not follow the mouse's moves... no clicks either.
Basically when I do
Quote:
I don't see junk printed on my terminal, whereas moving around the touchpad I do see some.
Just to clarify, It's not just X that is not working, gpm doesn't get mouse moves from the usb mouse either (touchscreen works flawlessly in console too).
my xorg.conf looks like:
Quote:
I added the last 2 options after following this guide, which seems to cover concurrent read-in from more than 1 pointing devices.
All the other guides I found assume that you have a working gpm.
One question is: since with the new radeon drivers the xorg.conf file can be missing altogether and X will not cry, does it make any difference to add mouse options in xorg.conf?
Continuing my thought: it must be something else. Kernel doesn't seem to be the problem. The USB subsystem works since usb mass storage devices (that's all I have sitting around) are sensed by the kernel and udev properly. Additionally, the problem persists with the huge kernel.
Before slackware, I used to run fedora on the laptop and both pointing devices worked properly, however I think fedora uses another method of setting up the X server devices..

I use slackware 13.1-current on desktop with 4gb ram, nvidia geforce 210, and AMD cpu.
I have problem with my X starting using 40-50 MB of RAM and after some hours suddenly rises up to 400-500 MB. I have tried KDE ( with and without desktop effects ), LXDE, 3 different nvidia drivers ( the one made from the slackbuilds ) but no luck.
I decided at last to use the default slackware's driver. I uninstalled the nvidia driver and do startx, but it says code...
I have no idea about GPU and drivers, it was a mistake to install a driver for my nvidia just to have desktop effects. I just want to bring the things back as at the beginning of the systems installation and the default drivers.
Do you have any idea how to do it?

I recently installed slackware and while I was in the process of installing video drivers, I noticed something odd. "init 3" (or init anything) doesn't seem to work for me. While working in XFCE, when I do "init 3", nothing happens. But then, when I do "who -r" it says I am in runlevel 3 even though I am still in XFCE.

One thing I always do is switch to the vmlinuz-generic(-smp) kernel in /etc/lilo.conf and build an initrd (see /boot/README.initrd for details). The "huge" kernel used by default is only meant for installing and not recommended for everyday use. It has a lot of drivers you don't need built-in and uses more RAM than the "generic" kernels.
still trying to find my feet and get to know Slackware. In one of my previous threads, 'things to do after installing' i was told the above message. When i installed, it used the huge kernel, but i'm unsure if that was the one that got installed. when i start slackware up, above the login screen it say, wecome to Linux 2.6.37.6-smp (tty1) I was wondering how to swich to the generic smp kernel, do I just change the vmlinuz to the desired, in lilo?

I suspect a few people will eventually run into this problem, and while it's easy to get around for the more experienced users (the ones that *should* be running -current), we all know that everyone isn't in that group

vmlinuz-generic-smp-2.6.37.6-smp

I upgraded to current, and x won't start... I suspect it's probably an issue with the Nvidia drivers (I forgot to swith my xorg to the nv drivers; I knew I'd be getting a new kernel). Anyway, it leaves me with an unusable computer. Is there anyway I can get into a console before x tries to start. BTW, the ctrl-alt-f1 hotkey isn't working.

I turned my wifi switch off because I was on a plane, and wanted to save battery, but now Slackware isn't recognizing that it's being turned back on. I toggle the switch in XP, and the light goes from orange to blue, like normal, but no matter what I do in Slackware, the light stays orange. Wicd just tells me there are now wireless networks in range. My wireless card doesn't show up in ifconfig, but lspci shows it fine

I am running Slackware 12.2.
I have checked the file like /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf, and the command 'ip' or 'ifconfig', but still can not figure out how to write a script to switch between two network configurations easily.
Suppose that one configuration uses DHCP server to dynamically give the ip address, and uses a Default Gateway 1.1.1.1, a net mask 1.0.0.0, a DNS server 1.1.1.0;
and in another configuration the Ip address is fixed, and use a Default Gateway 2.2.2.2, a net mask 2.0.0.0, a DNS server 2.2.2.0;
Anyone would like to give me a hint on how to write one (or two separate) script(s) to switch between these two settings?

Since 13.37 I notice that vi needs the 'home' key to switch from input to command mode. I think this is only when I connect via Putty to the machine. When I am on local console it is still ESCape like it used to be. Does anyone know how to set it so that vi will switch from input to command mode using the ESCAPE key when using Putty?
Another vi question :
When you edit htm files, vi goes automagically into some sort of html display mode. Ofcourse I never want that since all I do is edit the html in vi. So I need to go to command mode and type :normal everytime I want to edit html files. Where can you configure that vi (or vim) default to normal mode always?
<I see that vi links to elvis : >
# ls -al /usr/bin/vi lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 Oct 3 2009 /usr/bin/vi -> elvis*

I'm running through an Emacs tutorial and I was trying to figure out how to exchange CTRL and CAPSLOCK.
1. From the Emacs Wiki, i saw
Code:
As super-user:
$ loadkeys emacs
$ echo "loadkeys emacs" >> /etc/rc.d/rc.local
so, maybe stupidly I tried this. Which seems to have changed nothing.
so then I try
Code:
loadkeys -d
to try and get back to the default. Which doesn't seem to work. so then thinking i should reset everything, try to go in /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty and do
Code:
loadkeys defkeymap.map.gz
Finally, I go into /etc/X11 and edit xorg.conf-vesa to uncomment
Code:
# If you'd like to switch the positions of your capslock and
# control keys, use:
#
Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:swapcaps"
and restart.
To no avail...

Fairly recent enough system. nvidia 6200.
Full install of slackware. then i use these instructions to install drivers:
Quote:
Install nvidia driver in Slackware Linux
Before begin the nvidia driver installation, you must make a copy of the original /etc/X11/xorg.conf as a backup. Use the copy command example below:
If you choose to install the nvidia driver that you download from nvidia website, you must close kde or x-window and install the driver from Linux command line terminal.
Copy the driver to the directory that you placed all third party software such as /usr/local/src. This is not necessary, just a good habit. To install the driver, run the nvidia driver with the sh command like in the example below.
Now, you just need to answer all the questions to configure nvidia driver and the nvidia installation program will do the driver and kernel installation for you.
When i startx the computer freezes with an underscore in the top left hand of screen and i can't switch between tty's.
I know the pc and card work fine with other linux and win os's.

I am using a Fling KVM switch (by Belkin), to connect 2 computers to my monitor One computer is running XP and the other is running Linux. My wireless switching mechanism has just gone the way of the saints but Belkin has supplied a software solution for this occurrence. There is a small app called Fling (surprising) that allows me to switch from the XP machine to the Linux machine but nothing to switch back to the XP. What I need to know is there a similar app for the Linux computer. (NB I have tried Synergy but have no idea how to set it up - I've been told that synergy might work).

My brother gave me his desktop so that I could use it for a headless server. I'm controlling via ssh/vnc. It has a TV/FM radio tuner in it, and I was wondering, could I stream FM radio or TV with it? I have it all setup with LAMP, so I just need to find out if the card works and how to stream using both flash and traditional audio formats. When I tried to use xawtv the server disconnected VNC and ssh and wouldn't let me log on. It did shutdown normal after I pushed the power button. I Here's the output from lshw code....

I recently purchased a DVB-T PCI (Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1110) card mainly for television watching purposes, but it also features FM radio tuner. I am now trying to find a software to listen to it. I have only been able to find some really old links and programs that no longer have working links, [URL] scroll down to FM radio software for example. Does anyone know a good working (and preferably still maintained) software for this?

I installed latests version Suse 64bit, and I have problems with Internet radio streams. Streams are skipping for 2-3 seconds every 10-20 seconds, or sometimes as long as 1-2 minutes. I tried GStremer and Xine engines, tried Amarok, Banshee.... always the same - radio streams skipping. I never found a way to increase buffer for Internet streams. Updated to last versions , still the same.
