Hardware :: Slackware Nvidia Driver Install - Freezes With An Underscore In Top Left Hand Of Screen And Can't Switch Between Tty's

Mar 17, 2010

Fairly recent enough system. nvidia 6200.

Full install of slackware. then i use these instructions to install drivers:

Quote:

Install nvidia driver in Slackware Linux

Before begin the nvidia driver installation, you must make a copy of the original /etc/X11/xorg.conf as a backup. Use the copy command example below:

If you choose to install the nvidia driver that you download from nvidia website, you must close kde or x-window and install the driver from Linux command line terminal.

Copy the driver to the directory that you placed all third party software such as /usr/local/src. This is not necessary, just a good habit. To install the driver, run the nvidia driver with the sh command like in the example below.

Now, you just need to answer all the questions to configure nvidia driver and the nvidia installation program will do the driver and kernel installation for you.

When i startx the computer freezes with an underscore in the top left hand of screen and i can't switch between tty's.

I know the pc and card work fine with other linux and win os's.

Ubuntu :: Goes To Black Screen With Underscore In The Upper Left Corner?

Aug 9, 2010

I have a Windows XP Dell laptop that completely froze the other day. I cannot start it up, and cannot even access safe mode -- it just goes to black screen with underscore in the upper left corner.

So, I did some searching and saw a recommendation to create a Ubuntu Live CD to run and access the info on the hard drive, at least. I have most of it backed up, but not the drivers and I know that will be a pain to redo. So, I am mostly hoping at this point to recover a little info off the drive before reinstalling the OS. Of course, if I could just fix it, that would be better...

I get an error message when I try to access the hard drive through Ubuntu that says it is in hibernation mode and I need to start windows and shut it down properly before Ubuntu can mount the drive. Since I can't get into Windows, this is impossible. It also said something about being able to mount it read-only.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Booting - When Screen Loads Up - It Is Missing The Top And Left Hand Side Navigation Bars

Jul 7, 2011

I have recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.04 inside my copy of Windows. When I boot my laptop, I have the option to either boot in Windows or Ubuntu. When I boot in Ubuntu, I get the login screen all OK. But when the screen loads up, it is missing the top and left hand side navigation bars. It then appears to be trying to refresh itself (unsuccessfully) as after about 30 seconds the screen goes black and then the wallpaper image will come back, still without the navigation bars. This keeps on happening until I reboot the machine. The only way I can get the screen to reboot OK is to run the repair option on boot up.

I have notices that after the above has taken place and I have finally got the system to boot all OK by running the repair option, the system will not connect to my mobile broadband via the USB dongle. Not sure if they are related, but at this point they seem to be.

Ubuntu :: Monitor Dims On Left Side / Unable To Install NVIDIA Driver

Aug 6, 2011

I had installed Ubuntu 10.10 and there was a dim spot on the left side of the monitor. I could move the window to the right, but anything on the left was dim, and if I set the window to full screen, the whole screen went dim. I was able to find a fix online, I followed the instructions, and Voila! It was fixed, so I knew it was not a hardware issue. I installed 11.04, and have the same dim screen issue, but I can't find the instructions that fixed it last time. I tried to download and install the latest driver from NVIDIA, and I get this error:

ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com. If anyone has any fix for the dim screen

Slackware :: Can't Kill X For Nvidia Driver Install

Feb 8, 2011

I've been using Debian mostly for years now. Just got Slackware 13 (Xfce4) all set-up really nice. But I can't seem to "kill" or stop the x server to install the nvidia driver. I downloaded the one I know works for my older gforce4 card from the Nvidia website itself (the 96.43.19 one). In Slackware,..when I hit "Ctrl+Alt+F1,...it doesn't go to the prompt! I've tried everything I can think of in the Terminal,..but I admit, I don't really have a clue what I'm really doing,..and Google isn't really turning up much to go on. I even got the driver started in the terminal,...then it "fussed" at me for not killing x.

Hardware :: Can't Install NVIDIA Proprietary Driver In Slackware 13.1

Oct 7, 2010

I've been trying to install the driver for my NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 in Slackware 13.1 with no success. I always get the same error report: the module you're trying to build does not match the kernel source or something like that. The result: unable to build module and the installation crashes.

I have tried to:set a custom kernel source path, install it with the slackbuilds driver and kernel, extract the contents and trying to compile it myself, find possibly conflicting drivers or modules, use different versions of the same driver (I've tried installing the versions 256.53, 256.44, 195.36.31 and 173.14.27)recompile the Linux kernel in an attempt to make sure that the tools used to build the kernel were the same used o build the module.

The only time I got a different error message was when I used the slackbuild packages. It built the 'nvidia.ko' module, but it didn't work. I got a version magic notice when booting and, when I tried to start x, a fatal error "no screens were found."

Just to be sure, I made a clean full install of Slackware (only added WICD to be able to download the drivers and ran slackpkg update and upgrade all) and tried again. It didn't work.

Fedora :: Nvidia Driver Install Not Blank Screen?

Running 2.6.33.3-85.fc13.i686 and just purchased a AGP 7600GT 512 video card. Searched around and found:I did the rpm, yum, sed, mv & dracut as directed. Then I rebooted. When it starts up (all the normal bios messages) and then I 1/2" bar across the bottom of the screen with Fedora 13 on the right end and .... nothing. Just sits there. I've used my Live-13 disk and tried to reverse the procedure but I'm starting to think it's the video drivers.

General :: Screen Resolution Low After Nvidia Driver Install?

Nov 15, 2010

I am running Fedora 14 on a Dell Lat D630 laptop.

When originally installing my resolution was a perfect 1440x900.

I then installed the Nvidia drivers with:

YUM install kmod-nvidia

This worked fine, I tried out Super Tux 2 to test it and I do indeed have 3D acceleration now. The only problem is my resolution has gone way down. The Nvidia software states its still 1440x900 but it definitely is not... And my monitor is down as (Not in front of it right now so cant remember exactly) Generic or not detected... Is that what's causing the issue?

So to summarize, I have 3D hardware acceleration, the appropriate Nvidia drivers, it's just my resolution and the fact the Nvidia software is lying about it...

Debian :: How To Switch To Nvidia Driver

Mar 19, 2011

Using Debian Squeeze

I installed the Nvidia installer: NVIDIA-Linux-x8~.86.14-pkg1.run I configured the xorg.conf file and changed the driver from nv to nvidia. I also removed "load dri"

When I use startx I get this error and it won't give me a desktop:

(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (loader failed, 7)
(EE) No drivers available

This is all I remember doing with Lenny. Apparently there is something else I need to do with Squeeze?

When my system boots up now instead of having the cool blue screen with the fedora logo in the middle that loads up I get a black screen with a bar at the bottom that says Fedora 15 to the right and the bar fills up blue and white. It looks like 8 bit Nintendo. Did I do something wrong? Is there a way to get the nice Fedora 15 load screen back?

Ubuntu :: 10.4 Widget Ordering When On The Left Hand Side?

May 13, 2010

On Windows, the widget set for windows is on the right and the widget order is minimise, fullscreen, close. Linux in general (And Ubuntu's themes specifically) *generally* mirrored this.On OSX, the widgets are on the left and the order is close, minimise, fullscreen. On Ubuntu 10.4 the widget set has been moved to the left hand side, but is just a move of the standard windows order. Is it possible (in a way that won't break future themes or edits, so by using the GUI preferrably but I can't find any option) to change the widget ordering?

I like the Dust Sand theme fondow borders etc, which doesn't actually show icon differences for the 3, just 3 dots. As a user of Windows and OSX as well as Ubuntu I keep finding myself clicking the wrong one as my brain just expects them to be in the OSX order when on the left (it just makes sense in my head for close to be on the outside edge, whichever side that may be, and for minimiseo come beformaximise/fullscreen when reading left-right). I realise other people may (and probably will) disagree with me on this, especially non-mac users, so it'd be preferable to be able to customise the order rather than force one or the other on people.

I realize that many have had the issue of getting a black screen when booting up. I'm posting because I've tried a couple fixes that I read after doing a search and haven't had any luck yet. I have the 64-bit 10.04 installed on my netbook and my issue surfaced after installing the current nVidia accelerated graphics driver. Following the install ubuntu now boots to a black screen and nothing more. Fedora :: Nvidia's Latest Driver Freezes System

Jun 26, 2011

Lately (F14 and F15), Nvidia's drivers have been making my system freeze unexpectedly when running X. The only work around I have is reverting to an older driver (173.14.30). Although no freezes occur when using the older one, I need the latest one to run a few games sometimes. The odd thing is that when running these games within Wine while having the latest driver installed prevents the system from its usual freeze. I'd just like to solve this problem so I don't have to consistently revert back and forth from the two. I have a Nvidia Geforce 8800m gts and I am running F15 x86_64.

OpenSUSE Install :: 'x11failsafe' Parameter - GUI Wouldn't Show Up - Ctrl+alt+f2 Yeilded A Black Screen With A Blinking Underscore

Oct 30, 2009

I ran into a problem the moment i installed 11.1. The GUI wouldn't show up (ctrl+alt+f2 yeilded a black screen with a blinking underscore). Failsafe worked fine, though.

So, i tried entering, one by one, every parameter that was entered in the failsafe boot options. Entering 'x11failsafe' gave me a flawless GUI. So, i opened the '/boot/grub/menu.lst' file and added this parameter in the 'showopts' of the normal mode, to make it permanent. Fine. Now, what exactly have i done?

Note- I use an NVidia 8000 series Graphic card. I'll post more details if you need them.

Ubuntu Installation :: Gnome Shell Replace Doesn't Work - No Application Launcher In Upper Left Hand Corner

I hit the windows key and get nothing and there is no application launcher in the upper left hand corner and Alt-f2 produces nothing at all. Alt-tab gives me the option of choosing the windows that were running when I ran gnome-shell --replace but nothing else works at all. Just a vast expanse of digital nothingness. Does anyone know why this might be? I have an nvidia video card (see sig below) and two monitors running from "twin view".

Fedora :: Using RPM Nvidia Drivers Or Building Them By Hand?

Aug 6, 2009

For a new project at work, I'm looking into building a processing farm of a few dozen Tesla 1U servers from Nvidia. This has lead us on to figure a way to let the developers run tests on their own workstations (with the appropriate gfx card). The cards we're looking at are Quadro FX 1800 or 3800's to provide quite a bit of poke.

Thing is, I'm having issues with running any Cuda code successfully on systems installed with the pre-built nvidia drivers from RPMFusion. I can only get code running if I download the nvidia or cuda drivers from nvidia and install by hand. Not something I'd like to be maintaining across all out developer workstations. Is anyone out there running Cuda on Fedora/RHEL5 platform? If so, are you using RPM nvidia drivers or building them by hand?
