Fedora Hardware :: Radio Kill Switch Functionality Broken With Updated F12 Kernels?

Jan 7, 2010

First tried in the x64 section:[URL]

Original Fedora (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64) works great!
Fedora (2.6.31.6-145.fc12.x86_64) broken!
Fedora (2.6.31.6-162.fc12.x86_64) broken!
Fedora (2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64) broken!

Does anyone have a workaround? In software I can turn the WLAN on, but Bluetooth isn't happening

Fedora X86/64bit :: F12 Kernel Update Lost Radio Kill Switch Functionality / Bluetooth?

Dec 7, 2009

Initial FC12 install worked great, kernel 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 allowed radio kill switch functionality Fn-F11 for wlan and Fn-F12 for bluetooth. The last two kernels have broken that functionality.

I have a ThinkPad T60 with the AR5008 chipset. I am using a Madwifi driver that I complied from source (this is a fixed driver related to a bug report on this chipset). My Thinkpad has a hardware switch on the front. My problem is that the wireless works whether or not the radio switch is in the on position.I have not been able to figure out how to make the wifi radio turn on and off with the switch.Note that the bluetooth does respect the switch.

Ubuntu :: Bash Broken, Lost Functionality In Terminal (gnome-terminal)?

Dec 10, 2010

Linux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"

In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.

P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Updated ALSA For Add Bass Speaker Switch For HP Dv7?

Apr 10, 2010

I would like your input please. I'm using an HP DV7 laptop and the sound works under Opensuse 11.2 but without base. I have therefore updated ALSA to version 1.0.22.1 to make use of the introduced base switch for DV7 (ALSA changelog here)

I have tried these ALSA options but without any change / improvement to the base sound.
options snd-hda-intel=hp-dv5 and also hp-dv7 and hp_dv7
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
Any ideas?

The second line stops the sound from "stuttering" but the first seem to have no effect.

The Carmen Player does work well with Banshee, it is the internet radio that is not working.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Gnome Radio - Doesn't Find Any Radio Channels And The Input Channel Is Completely Wrong

May 1, 2010

I have a new install of Karmic on my system with a flyvideo 3000 tv card installed. My problem is that it doesn't find any radio channels and the input channel is completely wrong. I don't have any sound on gnomeradio and can't find the config files to change the input channel. The only input option available to me is dig1 - can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have already read the Howto for this tv card and changed the device to radio0 in the setup. I have setup tvtime perfectly with sound channel as well as with a 5.1 surround configuration. I am missing my favourite radio channel. and I want to get rid of my windows installations once and for all! Update: I did a system update and some things have changed: the radio tower graphic on gnomeradio is now green (I assume it is getting a signal) but no sound yet.

I can't believe that there seems to be no way for me to record my shows from my radio. Works fine when I boot into the Mac side and even when I use Ubuntu using VMware Fusion. When I boot into Ubuntu directly, Audio In in the Sound preferences doesn't seem to work. No audio coming through when I try to record from the radio.

I've been an ubuntu user for a while, and just started trying out fc15. In nautilus, there used to be an "emblems" side panel, as well as an emblems tab in the file properties window. (emblems being the little overlays you could assign to files or folders, like a tick or a cross or a smiley fdace or whatever). Is there some package I need to install to get this functionality back? Has it never been present in fedora, or is it a change in gnome3 / fc15?

I was wondering if there was a Linux equivalent, such as crontab, that could do all those things. It's the last barrier to almost full time Linux use.

Fedora :: Difference Between 586 And 686 Kernels?

Jan 6, 2010

I have a fairly aged Pentium 4, RAID, desktop computer with Fed 11. I started off with the 686 PAE kernel and update it whenever the update software tells me to. Some time ago I downloaded an NVidia driver which said it needed the 586 kernel so I installed that as well.I then uninstalled the NVidia driver as it caused some minorish problems without any improvement to the graphics. The bottom line is I now have the last three 686 kernels and the last three 586 kernels, which I'm pretty sure I don't need. The machine seems to run fine whichever I use with no discerable differences. My questions are, what is the difference between the two types, which should I actually use and how do I get rid of the other. It would at the very least reduce bandwidth use when updating.

Fedora :: How Do Releases Map To Kernels

Jan 14, 2010

My MythTV system is running under F12. It is in "appliance mode;" all configured and happily doing the PVR thing without a pressing need for upgrades. However, there is a feature in the upcoming 2.6.32 kernel that I'd like to take advantage of; internal support for a certain capture card.

I see 2.6.32 mentioned as part of the F13 release. My question is, will it also be available for F12 . . . maybe sooner than the F13 release?Another way to put this is: How wedded are Fx releases and kernel releases? Is a major kernel goalpost like 2.6.32 the reason why Fx releases are made?

Fedora ::automatically Add New Kernels To Grub ?

Feb 17, 2010

I'm sure there is a thread on this somewhere, but after looking though the first 100+ search results, I can't seem to find it.

After a kernel update today, I noticed that new kernels are not being added to my grub menu.lst (so consequently, I was running an older kernel).

Any obvious reason why this would happen (kernels being installed normally, with yum update)? I thought the whole process was supposed to be automagic.

Would it have anything to do with the fact that I just kept my F11 menu.lst, and added a F12 kernel to it when I installed F12 (to a separate partition), then eventually (today, finally) removed the f11 kernels from it?

Here's my menu.lst, in case it's useful:
