Slackware :: No Eth/sound/agpgart After Recovery From Backups?
Mar 15, 2010
I wanted to clone a system (running slackware 12.1) so I created a tar file with all the directories from the original system, skipping over dev, mnt, proc, tmp and home. On the target system, after dumping the directories and running lilo (after using chroot to the mounted partition), the system booted and worked almost fine. The only problem is that the network card, sound card are not detected, and /dev/agpgart is not recognized by X. Everything else (usb controllers, PCMCIA, etc) works.
I had to create /proc on the target filesystem, and copy (with -R) /dev from the live cd (2005 gentoo based System Rescue CD) to the target filesystem. Are some files missing or maybe permissions are not set correctly? This is the second time I'm doing this and I'm missing something, but the first time it worked flawlessly (though it was one year ago, so I can't remember the details ) If anyone tried to clone a system the same way, please share any ideas (or any other way to clone one system to another (the systems differ from every point, so dumping the whole partition will not work), since a full reinstall takes too much time)

What software is recommended to make backups of my DVD collection?
I used to use DVD43 in Windows, but now in Slackware I am not sure what is recommended for such a process.

I've been a DOS/Windows guy for 20 years, and recently became a SW test lab helper. My company uses CentOS for a lot, so I've become familiar with it, but obviously not as comfortable as I am with Windows.
Here's what I have planned:
machine: Core 2 Duo E8400, 8GB DDR2, 60GB SSD OS drive, ATI 4650 video card, other storage is flexible (I have 3 1TB drives and 4 750GB drives around that can be used in this machine.)
uses: HTPC, Network Storage, VMWare server host: SMTP, FTP server, and Web server virtual machines
I've figured out how to do much of this, but I haven't figured out how to do backups in Linux. I've been spoiled with Windows, with the built in backup system so simple to use. I find myself overwhelmed with the array of backup software, and unable to determine which to use. none of them seem to do everything I need them to do, but some come close, I think. I'm hoping someone here can help me out in figuring out which program to use and how to use it.
Here is what I need the backup software to do:
1. scheduled unattended backups, with alerts if the backups fail
2. a weekly full backup with incremental every 12 hours
3. removing the old backups when the new full backup runs, I would prefer to keep 2 weeks of backups, but that's not necessary
4. a GUI would be preferable, since my arthritic fingers don't always do as I want them to do. I typo things a lot, and the label worn off my backspace can attest to that.

How do you get Rsync to do incremental backups rather than full backups? At the moment I have a script that will create a backup folder (if it doesnt already exist) then copy the source files into the backup directory with the command
rsync $VERBOSE --exclude=$TARGET/ $EXCLUDE --exclude '/Ls-wtgl1c8/**' -rt --delete $source/ $TARGET/$source/ >> $LOG_FILE
Target is where the files will be backed up to Sources is the dir(s) to be backed up Exclude files is the list of files not to backup
log file is where the output will be saved to. At the moment it only does full backups, but I would only like to do incremental, how would this be achieved? Am I missing out an option in the Rsync that is required.

I'm trying to get my Intel HM55 GMA HD graphics card to work in Debian Lenny. As the vanilla Xorg didn't have any support for it, I manually compiled the last stable Xorg source (1.7.1 - such a pain) and the Intel driver. But when I try to launch X, I get the following message :
(EE) GARTInit: Unable to open /dev/agpgart (No such file or directory)
(EE) intel(0) : /dev/agpgart is either not available, or no memory is available for allocation. Please enable agpgart.

Is it possible to load a USB stick so it works as a Slackware bootstick, a dual boot system and Slackware 13.1 installation medium?I'm planning to install 13.1 on a netbook (Samsung NP-N150-KA01IN) which comes with Windows 7 installed and probably an OEM recovery partition (I don't have the netbook yet). In this LQ threaddimm0k asked about keeping the OEM boot system including OEM recovery while being able to dual boot Slackware.samac suggested using a USB stick to control the boot.During Slackware installation there is a step to create a USB bootstick. The netbook does not have a CD/DVD drive so I plan to use Eric Hameleers'usbimg2disk.sh (now part of the Slackware 13.1 distribution). It would be great if all three functions could be combined on single USB stick and it could also carry data files. I would be able to carry a complete "disaster recovery" solution while travelling light.Only downside to this plan is that losing the USB stick would mean only being able to boot Windows 7 I'm happy to put some work into this but don't know where to look for the architecture of the bootstick and can't reverse engineer it not having created one during installation.

I got a new laptop today (yay) with windows 7 on it. I want to keep a small windows partition, just in case I need it for something. Anyway, I know how to use fdisk, and am comfortable installing on a disk without data I need to maintain.. but this new computer came with 5 (!) windows partitions. I don't know where to start.
I don't mind reinstalling windows after partitioning if I have to, but I really don't want to screw up the recovery partition. Any clues on where to start or what to look for? Or what NOT to do?
It looks like "my computer" has two partitions listed (c: and d: ). I guess I could just take note of the size of these two partitions, free up the partitions that match in fdisk, then repartition that space and install everything.
I need to reboot to do that, so I'll edit with the information when I have it.
fdisk output:
Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x8e0eee9e

I was just given a computer from a coworker and installed the latest Slackware version on it. I then installed Gnome Slackbuild and installed the Nvidia driver.I've run alsaconf and it seems to run fine without any errors and unmuted all the channels in alsamixer.

I've got a, as it seems to me, strange problem.I've inadvertently deleted my user from the group admin so I'm in the same situation of a lot of other users (read a lot of messages about it).My problem is that when restarted in recovery mode there is no way I can choose the 'drop to the root shell' or similar in the menu. The menu appears for a second and then I've got an empty screen. If I press a key I've been requested for a username and password that of course is not what I need.

Today I installed Slackware 13 because of some issues I'd been having with slackware 9, which I'd gradually updated, but apparently not perfectly, hence the clean install of ver 13. Anyways, I have no sound. At first I thought I had no sound at all, but then I found out that audio does work for root. When I try to run alsamixer as a non-root user, I get this error:
Code: alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory Now if I run it as root though, it works just fine. If I run the KDE system settings thing, what I guess is their version of the windows control panel, and I go to the multimedia section, I can see my card, but if I click test, it says that it's failed and that it's "reverting back to ." or something to that effect.(I'm in fluxbox right now). I would imagine that there's something I need to do with respect to modifying permissions, but I really don't know what that is that I'm supposed to do.

I got two problems. Problem 1 the sound is kind of sketchy..I thought the sound card got blown. But I heard my friend got sound on it again before we put Slackware on. Next I left him to install it while I went to class. I don't think he put a swap in. The computer is painfully slow and it can't even switch users because it looks like the ram got murdered or something. My Questions are how to test / get a working sound card. I did do the alsamixer I think the command is and turn the volume levels up yet I don't hear anything.
As far as the swap partions I don't there is one but I am not sure how to look / check to where if he made it to small or not at all.

This problem applies to Konqueror, Firefox, and Seamonkey. It applies equally to all forms of online sound content, from flash to yahoo media player. Yes, the sliders are up in my sound mixer! I have sound from all other apps, just not web browsers. It also applies to alluser accounts.

sound is fine in KDE, but not in Firefox.
Alsamixer shows no capture controls for the device and I get no sound through the browser. I have set the device as default. However, I get sound fine when testing in KDE's System Settings (Phonon). Sound works just fine through Amarok and Dragon Player.
How do I get Firefox to play sound through this device?

I was reluctant to start yet another sound thread, but after days of searching sites and reading mini HOWTO's I'm still mute. I have tried configuring ALSA via:
# alsaconf
# /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa start
# alsamixer - all relevant sliders unmuted...
# alsactl store
...and still nothing. KDE reports that 'Audio playback device ALC889 does not work.' My kmix app doesn't even start. At boot I get this message 3 times:
"ALL CONFIG FILES NEED /etc/modprobe.d/sound - it will be ignored in a future release"
Even starting xmms brings up 'Check that - your soundcard is configured properly/the correct plugin is selected/no other program is blocking the soundcard'. btw, Windows reports I have an ALC888, not a 889. KDE lists it as present as both digital and analog, and the legacy system (whatever it is) as well as esound, but none work. I certainly had no difficulty with S11.

basically, sound will cut in and out. if i'm on videos, whenever sound cuts out, the video will continue for exactly two seconds and stop. sometimes i can reload the videos video, and it'll either play for two seconds without sound, or go normal, but usually for only a little time, not even a minute. similar problems for amarok, spotify and other applications using the sound card. this is the output when trying to restart the alsa demon
code:
root@muspellsheim:/etc/rc.d# /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa restart
loading alsa mixer settings: /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
unknown hardware: "ich4" "realtek alc650f" "ac97a:414c4723" "0x1462" "0x5770"
hardware is initialized using a guess method
/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:1255: failed to obtain info for control #11 (no such file or directory)
/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:1255: failed to obtain info for control #12 (no such file or directory)
output of /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
code:
root@muspellsheim:/etc/rc.d# cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
some of the utput of lspci -v
i've tried reconfiguring alsa by using the alsaconf application, which didn't help. the output from restarting the alsa demon, may indicate that the correct driver isn't loaded.

Got Slackware 12.2 and there's no sound. Ran alsaconf and it finds three 'soundcards' whereas I have only onboard sound. None of the choices achieve anything. Interestingly, Windows detects the sound as coming from 'C-Media AC97' whereas alsaconf doesn't see that, but reports two others:
ATI Technologies Inc. RV 610LE audiodevice Raedon HD 2400 PRO
VIA Technologies Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller
As well as:

Up until about 12 hours ago my sound was working perfectly. Then I played a game with my daughter called Potato guy and I got a message saying that there was some conflict with the sound card.
This is the message I got:
"KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed. Do you want KDE to permanently forget about these devices? This is the list of devices KDE thinks can be removed: Output: HDA Intel, ALC889 Digital (IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output) Output: HDA Intel, NVIDIA HDMI (HDMI Audio Output)"
I selected "no", however, in the sound configuration menu, the above devices are grayed out.
Here are some outputs:
lsmod
snd_seq_dummy 1487 0
snd_seq_oss 29884 0
snd_seq_midi_event 5620 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 52643 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_seq_device 5459 3 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq

I don't know what to do, i tried reinstalling alsa multiple times but still no success. Is there any way to bring back my previous configuration when i installed slackware ?
