After installing the latest Thunderbird from the list of ~current packages the "new message arrive" sound has disappeared. I've checked the configuration and it appears to be in order.
View 12 RepliesI have learned a bunch about Ubuntu in the last few days but I am stuck now. I can't get a wav file I selected for new mail to play in fact the default one either. My sound is fine otherwise. Other files play OK. I have googled and wore my fingers up to the knuckle and still haven't found a clear solution. One poster even said Ubuntu does not allow a file other than the system ones. I can't accept that. If it wasn't possible why is the option there to select your own wav file?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI store all my personal files inclduing mail folders on my external usb drive which allows me to experiment with different distros freely.On each new install i point the mail settings to my mozilla folder. But Slackware 13 is throwing a lot of challenges my way. I am currently finding that I cannot copy recently arrived mail into my designated folders. The message says something about I am running out of disk space when in fact I have plenty of space.
I initially thought it might have something to do with file permissions. But definitely not in this case. The folder is owned by myself and has full permissions chmod 775.I am currently using windows which gives access to all my mail folders.
i have recently been having random problems with mostly firefox. the 2 most annoying problems (that work in other browsers) were: no sound on various sites, like videos and amazon mp3 previews. the mailto command would not work.
the fix is 2 part: i installed the standard release of thunderbird 3.1.1 and the firefox mailto problem is fixed. i installed the standard release of firefox 3.6.7 and sound now works fine.
additionally i have removed thunderbird, firefox and related ubuntu brandng from the package manager for the following reasons:above fixes, time and frustration involved in debug.eliminates the chronic application directory rename during updates, /usr/lib/... and softlink change in /usr/bin.allows me to keep up with t'bird and firefox security patches as they are released, i.e. immmediately.
So I installed the latest Thunderbird security update without bothering to check what version it was and found that I had "up"graded from 2 to 3. Despite selecting 'no synchronization' on all my archived Gmail labels it still started downloading many gigabytes of archived email. In Thunderbird 2 I had just the headers of the archive and that suited me fine. So a warning about installing the latest updates without checking and a question: Is there a Thunderbird 2 package for slackware 13.1?

After the massive upgrades for Slackware64-current, I am now missing all the panel icons in Thunderbird. I even downloaded a couple of new themes, but I still have no icons. I am current with -current, except for Thunderbird, where I am still using 2.0.0.23
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo, approx 2 weeks ago, clicking on links in Thunderbird stopped working. There is no response in the browser whether it is open or not. I am able to paste the links to the browser just fine. Being congenitally lazy, I would rather just click them. I have upgraded to the latest version of Thunderbird and have the same issue. I have tried using Swiftfox, Firefox and Opera - all give the same non-response.
Am not getting any error messages, the links just do not open. Can't find any settings relevant to this issue.Any bright ideas out there?

View 3 Replies View RelatedRunning Slackware64 13.1 here. I started up Firefox this morning and all the text is completely blank - all the menus have disappeared and everything. I can't really think of a great way to explain it clearly so I've attached screen grabs of Firefox and Thunderbird (which has the same problem). Other GTK apps seem to be fine, it's just the Mozillas as far as I can tell.
I have tried removing both with code...
And then I reinstalled both Firefox and Thunderbird from .txz files I downloaded from a repository, but they're still the same. Firefox version is 3.6.3 and Thunderbird is 3.0.4.
Well, that's about it - the firefox and thunderbird packages included on the first batch of official 13.1 updates keep crashing when I try to print a web page or an e-mail. Seamonkey, updated as well, can print as usual.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm preparing a laptop for Slackware 13.x or whatever the new release will be. I've installed '-current' x86_64 arch. Boy, is this baby fast on this laptop. I thought 13 was fast but oh well another thread.
My issue now is that with '-current' is that ThunderBird links won't open in FF. I click on a link in TB and noting happens. I searched and found '"Browser" problems in Thunderbird 3'.

I modified the 'prefs.js' file. Of course it was done while app was not running. Still no joy. Further searches showed the same thing with most users bumping back to older versions. There's got to be fix and I refuse to give up to a computer let alone a DE.
I was just given a computer from a coworker and installed the latest Slackware version on it. I then installed Gnome Slackbuild and installed the Nvidia driver.I've run alsaconf and it seems to run fine without any errors and unmuted all the channels in alsamixer.

I'm currently trying to install unRaid on Slackware following this tutorial :[URL].. I'm new to Linux and after many hours, i finally managed to build the new kernel for unRAID (2.6.32.9). But audio on HDMI port doesn't work I tried alsaconf without success. HDMI sound works when i boot into the old kernel.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.
This is what I did:
First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).
Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL
Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder
Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.
Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".
And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)
My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?
Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.
I run version 10.04 GNOME. My problem is (after substantial searching) that I need to have both users ('juliusz' and 'sarah') running Thunderbird but with the same profile (settings, email, accounts etc. preferably of 'juliusz'). The only results on the internet are share Thunderbird between Windows and Ubuntu.
I have two users juliusz and sarah. I need either of them to have the same profile, always in synch whenever they logon to own account. When I tried to edit sarah's /home/sarah/.mozilla-thunderbird/profile.ini by inserting: Path=/home/juliusz/.mozilla-thunderbird/xxxxxxx.default after i run Thunderbird for 'sarah' I get message: "Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system." I checked with "ps aux" there is no Thunderbird running in sarah's session. There is no Thunderbird running in juliusz's session when I reloged to juliusz.
I've just finished installing slackware 13.1, but I'm not able to hear any sound.
I have tried alsaconf, but it did not help.

I have installed 11.4, and it seems (seemed) to work OK so far. I installed Thunderbird via the opensuse "1 click install". the installation ran smoothly, but now a click on the Thunderbird icon does not activate any mail client; the only success is that Thunderbird icon jumps joyfully and then disappears.
View 9 Replies View RelatedToday I installed Slackware 13 because of some issues I'd been having with slackware 9, which I'd gradually updated, but apparently not perfectly, hence the clean install of ver 13. Anyways, I have no sound. At first I thought I had no sound at all, but then I found out that audio does work for root. When I try to run alsamixer as a non-root user, I get this error:

If I run the KDE system settings thing, what I guess is their version of the windows control panel, and I go to the multimedia section, I can see my card, but if I click test, it says that it's failed and that it's "reverting back to ." or something to that effect.(I'm in fluxbox right now). I would imagine that there's something I need to do with respect to modifying permissions, but I really don't know what that is that I'm supposed to do.
I recently got a yamaha sound card from a friend because my Intel card was not working so I disabled Intel sound card from BIOS so that I can use only Yamaha card but I hear no sound in Slackware but can hear sound in my Fedora & Windows (i.e.card is working) code...
View 3 Replies View RelatedI got two problems. Problem 1 the sound is kind of sketchy..I thought the sound card got blown. But I heard my friend got sound on it again before we put Slackware on. Next I left him to install it while I went to class. I don't think he put a swap in. The computer is painfully slow and it can't even switch users because it looks like the ram got murdered or something. My Questions are how to test / get a working sound card. I did do the alsamixer I think the command is and turn the volume levels up yet I don't hear anything.
As far as the swap partions I don't there is one but I am not sure how to look / check to where if he made it to small or not at all.
This problem applies to Konqueror, Firefox, and Seamonkey. It applies equally to all forms of online sound content, from flash to yahoo media player. Yes, the sliders are up in my sound mixer! I have sound from all other apps, just not web browsers. It also applies to alluser accounts.

Alsamixer shows no capture controls for the device and I get no sound through the browser. I have set the device as default. However, I get sound fine when testing in KDE's System Settings (Phonon). Sound works just fine through Amarok and Dragon Player.
How do I get Firefox to play sound through this device?
I was reluctant to start yet another sound thread, but after days of searching sites and reading mini HOWTO's I'm still mute. I have tried configuring ALSA via:
# alsaconf
# /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa start
# alsamixer - all relevant sliders unmuted...
# alsactl store
...and still nothing. KDE reports that 'Audio playback device ALC889 does not work.' My kmix app doesn't even start. At boot I get this message 3 times:
"ALL CONFIG FILES NEED /etc/modprobe.d/sound - it will be ignored in a future release"
Even starting xmms brings up 'Check that - your soundcard is configured properly/the correct plugin is selected/no other program is blocking the soundcard'. btw, Windows reports I have an ALC888, not a 889. KDE lists it as present as both digital and analog, and the legacy system (whatever it is) as well as esound, but none work. I certainly had no difficulty with S11.
basically, sound will cut in and out. if i'm on videos, whenever sound cuts out, the video will continue for exactly two seconds and stop. sometimes i can reload the videos video, and it'll either play for two seconds without sound, or go normal, but usually for only a little time, not even a minute. similar problems for amarok, spotify and other applications using the sound card. this is the output when trying to restart the alsa demon
