Slackware :: Methods To Rip CDs And FLAC Playback Quality?

Dec 19, 2010

first of all: I am not sure, if this is the right forum, as I don't know, if it is Slackware-relatedm, or if it is a general thing affecting other distros with KDE, as well. If the latter is the case, please let me know, where to post this (Linux Software or Linux Desktop forum?). BTW, I am on Slackware64-13.1 (stable). Currently, I am trying to copy all my music CDs on a harddisk. I thought, this would be a very simple thing to do, but whatever I do I run into another issue.

Debian Programming :: Emacs And ECB Missing Python Methods In Methods Window

May 12, 2014

I work with python and I use emacs as my IDE tool. I have been running Debian Squeeze (6.0.9) for some time now with emacs 23.2.1 and ecb 2.32. I am able to access my python methods in the ecb-methods window with no problems. However I recently upgraded my desktop to Debian Wheezy (7.5) running emacs 23.4.1 and ecb 2.40 but I have lost access to the methods in the ecb-methods window. The window is just empty while the others (directories, sources and history) are all populated. I have a second laptop which I decided to upgrade to Debian Jessie, however Jessie recommends emacs 23.4.1 which is running with ecb 2.40 also. The result is the same as on Wheezy.

I have used the ecb menus and googled for a solution or even just a mention that such a problem exists but have come up with nothing. Either I have a unique situation here or am doing something really dumb.

I would like to upgrade to Wheezy or Jessie but I need access to methods in the ecb methods window. How to keep my upgrade and see the methods in the methods window of the ecb system ....

Slackware :: RC1 K3B Hangs After Ripping To Flac?

May 18, 2010

Looks like k3b is hanging after finishing ripping an audio cd to flac.

Doing a "ps -ef |grep flac" shows that the external flac child-process it invokes has ended.

This was working prior to BETA1, though I'm not sure if it was the k3b updates in BETA1 or anything subsequent that broke it.

update:

Found a similar report on Ubuntu forums for 10.04 but using the lame encoder. As k3b used the 'external encoder plugin" for both lame and flac it looks like the same issue and it's clearly not slackware specific.

Ubuntu bug report (no info as of yet): [URL]

What do I have to do to enable xmms on my slackware64 13,0-pc to play there flac-files with xmms also?

Slackware :: Poor Quality Fonts In OpenOffice Menus

Mar 23, 2011

I'm running -current (13.37) 32 bit and have installed OpenOffice 3.2.1. The problem is the menu fonts in OpenOffice which look very thin and are not smooth. All other application fonts look very good. When I had this same version of OpenOffice installed on Slackware 12.2 I did not see this problem. In OpenOffice I have ticked the option to use system font for user interface but this doesn't seem to have any effect. I've also ticked the screen font anti aliasing option because the fonts look worse when this is not ticked. My KDE system font is DejaVu Sans, the same as it was on Slackware 12.2.

My OpenOffice package was built using a script written by Robby Workman which I think I got from his web site a long time ago. It takes the rpms and creates a Slackware package.

Slackware :: HD Video Playback On 2nd Gen Core I3 With Vlc?

Jul 17, 2011

I have a weird HD video in wmv and mkf files playback problem. Every HD video i attempt to play using vlc with vaapi hardware acceleration looks like this: My hardware configuration is i3 cpu, and i am using it's integrated HD2000 video card, which has DVI, HDMI and VGA outputs, which all i am using (not at the same time). However, the problem is present in every combination (DVI only. DVI+HDMI. DVI+VGA. DVI+HDMI+VGA).

As for software, I am using stock 32bit Slackware 13.37, with stock 2.37.6 kernel. And for HD video playback I have installed VLC-1.1.10. libva-0.32.0 and MPlayer-20110624 all these packages came from Alien pastures, so they are quality packages And my vlc settings are also stock :/

Slackware :: How To Get Red Book Audio Playback

Jun 18, 2011

Sounds like a trivial thing, but how do you do it? How do you play a plain red book audio CD? I have tried xmms, audacious and mplayer. The only success I have had (if you can call it that) is with the latter, mplayer. Using the command:

Code:
mplayer -cdrom-device /dev/sr0 cdda://3 -cache 6000
I get the warnings:

Code:
Cache not filling, consider increasing -cache and/or -cache-min!
Cache not filling, consider increasing -cache and/or -cache-min!

The program plays the audio, but there is a huge latency prior to starting the playback, making it very cumbersome to change tracks and having to wait. I have tried with various cache values as well as using the "-cache-min" argument, to no avail. What values are certain to work?

As for xmms and audacious I get the errors:
Audacious: When trying "audacious /dev/sr0"

Code:
unix-io: read failed: Input/output error.
MADPlug-Message: Rejecting file:///dev/sr0; cannot read from file.
unix-io: read failed: Input/output error.
unix-io: read failed: Input/output error.
XMMS: When trying "xmms /dev/sr0": No error

It simply does nothing except starting up and not playing. My system is a 32-bit Slackware 13.1.0 on a fast x86. I have tried with different audio CDs.

Slackware :: Avoiding System Suspension During Mplayer Playback?

Apr 24, 2010

I'd like to know if there's a way to disable system suspension during mplayer playback, I'm using kde 4.4.2 by AlienBob on my slackware64-current, and powerdevil as the power manager. In powerdevil I've setup the performance profile to suspend the system after 30 minutes with no user interaction, and the presentation profile is setup not to use suspension at all, but I always forget to switch the profile before playing some long video on mplayer and the system goes down after 30 minutes of playback.

Does someone knows a way, a hidden mplayer setting (powerdevil setting would be ok too) that lets me disable suspension only when mplayer is working and nobody is using the system for more than 30 minutes??

Programming :: Invoke Methods Via Ssh On Servers From CSV?

Jan 14, 2011

I have to execute certain commands (like shutdown Tomcat) on several servers so I'm using a loop and ssh. I put the server's IP on a CSV file which I parse, execute the commands for each line and send the output to a file. The problem is that after processing one line the program stops execution. I wonder if someone could lend me a hand with this, I'm new in bash scripting and I ran out of ideas.

The CSV (servers.csv) file looks like this:

Code:

192.168.254.6:Server 2

And the script looks like this:

Code:

#!/bin/bash
while IFS=: read ip name
do
sshpass -p "pass" ssh -o "StrictHostKeyChecking no" root@"$ip" 'sh <CATALINA_BASE>/bin/shutdown.sh' >> output.log

Ubuntu Networking :: Port Will Not Open Regardless Of Methods

No matter what I do, i cannot get port 3100 to open. This is for a new MMO i am CBT on. I know it works on windows because that is how I installed it and played. But I prefer being on Linux. Majority of all other MMOs work fine. Just this one has to have udp 3100 open.

The following is a rough output of all the methods I have tried with no success. As you can see I have done some extensive research first before posting here.

Now its become a lil bit of an obsession.

I cannot get the following command to work:

And yes I tried the "spaces" in different places thinking that was the prob. So i cannot see if 3100 is in the list or not

I eventually turned on the firewall "ufw enable" add the port there, and output:

Some references

Firewall stuff: [url]

I even manually went into the router and turned it on there.

I add these lines for startup purposes.

Do I need to do something in "wine" ?

I feel i am starting to repease myself

Debian :: Methods For Changing The GRUB-PC Background Image?

Mar 26, 2011

After much searching and trying of more complicated methods for changing the GRUB-PC background image, i found method that seems to work. The simplest one! I installed grub2-splashimages, which created a new folder in /usr/share/images, called grub. From there it appears to be as simple as adding the image of your choice, then adding "GRUB_BACKGROUND=/usr/share/images/grub/your_image" to "/etc/default/grub" file, the running "update-grub", of course.

Only problem is it doesnt work for the image i really want. So my question: What qualities should an image have if it is to be successfully used as a GRUB-PC (GRUB 2?) background? I have read that you do not need to resize the image anymore, indeed i tried resizing it to match the size a default image form the "/usr/share/images/grub" folder , and saving it with the extension .tga in Gimp and it did not work. The image i want to use is quite large, it is also black and white/grey-scale and in the .png format.

General :: Sufficient Hardware And Methods To Stream Media In LAN?

Jul 22, 2010

Recently, my fraternity decided to use our LAN to stream media to our various bars, lounges and ballroom. Some of our playback devices, including an iPhone and a laptop, broke during a party, which is why we decided to have portable devices replaced with sturdy, interchangable and fixed hardware.

As this is going to cost some money and effort, we had better make a fully thought-through plan, which I am in charge of. Still, having never organized a project of any measurable magnitude, I would rather have this plan commented on here.

So far, I am planning to buy one central PC (2GHz, 512 MB RAM) acting as a server, and four identical PCs (1GHz, 256 MB RAM) acting as clients. The former would a) provide local files, stored an an external encrypted hard drive, and b) act as a NFS and SMB client to private systems in the same LAN to incorporate (and forward) data stored on those (as to provide one central point to change the configuration for their use). Futhermore, it would host /etc, /usr and /home of the individual clients to provide that at all times, the same software and drivers are used on all of them. The clients then would mount /etc, /usr and /home from the server, alongside with the both the directories on its external HDD and the ones it had itself mounted from other PCs. Each of them would have to be able to play back music, video files and terrestrial TV from a USB stick, with at most two of them doing so at a time.

Is this a realistic scenario? I so, would you have any recommendations for changes and could you point out pitfalls? The whole lot would have to be rather secure, as usually, there are lots of people coming and going, and we don't want our private data corrupted. If not, where did I go wrong? How would you yourself build a system like that?

And last, what software would you use? Is there a window manager which would be able to act solely as a means to display the three icons needed for TV, video, and music, and make it impossible to tamper with the system? And what programs would you use for playback to ensure maximum performance?

P.S.: Not that I'd suspect so, but is there a german lawyer present? Provided the individual files we play are in our legal posession, this is a legal scenario, isn't it? There would only be friends and other frats present at any public display.

Ubuntu Servers :: Authentication Methods Over Network Shares And SFTP

Feb 15, 2010

I run some IT systems for my schools Engineering student organization.

We are upgrading our systems and I just purchased a new server system which I am configuring.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and the new likewise-open packages.

The points I bring up following this sentence are to fulfill this final goal : Get SFTP, SSH, and Network Share's over our private network all using the schools Active Directory for auth and it's groups to derive privs.

So... Here's what i've done and what i've tried to do.

1 ) I set up likewise-open and got it to join the domain. When I do this I can ssh to localhost as 'schoolnetworkADname'. So that part works (hurray). To get a network share to use these same auth methods I have tried installing likewise-open-server. Everything launches find and the daemons run, but when I go into computer management on a windows server to set up the actual shares, I get permission denied. The account it is giving permission denied to is the same AD account that join likewise-open to the network, so... what is going on.

2 ) Samba, fail. I can't seem to get samba to run on this machine at all, which is strange because even my Samba expert was puzzled. It just won't let Samba join the domain properly, and due to this, I want to keep on the newer likewise package... unless I have to switch to this.

How I can get the lame likewise-open-server to work?

Ubuntu :: Killing Caps Lock (standard Methods Fail)

Oct 17, 2010

editing /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/pc
and commenting out a line there:
// key <CAPS> { [ Caps_Lock ] };

But changes in the xkb-files apparently only takes effect after login, and this particular system is set to autologin (i.e. it only works after I log out and log in again, not right after a reboot). I also tried putting

xmodmap -e "clear Lock" in one of the shell's startup-files (/etc/zsh/zshrc) No luck with that either. The above command works fine if I manually type it at the prompt, but for some strange reason it won't work in the shell startup script (and I know it has been executed since the lines before and after it in the script work fine).

Ubuntu Security :: Methods To Store Password For An Encrypted Filesystem?

Nov 27, 2010

I've created encryption systems on servers, but nearly always I have stored the password somewhere on the machine itself. The file is always 0600 to the relevant user, but a systematic analysis of my system could easily find the scripts that invoke decryption and discover the password. (The most blatant example of this is mounting SMB shares with the "-o credential_file" option where both the username and password are plain-text. In the cases where I've used this, the security of the share hasn't particularly mattered.)

Soon I might be faced with storing "patient health information" (PHI in the healthcare world) whose privacy is heavily regulated by the provisions of the US law called HIPAA. I've been thinking about creating an encrypted partition to hold the PHI, but I need a highly fault-tolerant method for obtaining the key from a different machine than tha server itself. At first, I thought about running a script using scp and shared keys to copy the key from the remote, use it to decrypt the partition, then erase it. I'd like to be able to do this with a pipe; otherwise I'll write the key in a non-persistent location like /dev/shm.

I need more than one machine to make this work to ensure I can obtain the key when needed (like at boot). One solution is to place copies of the key on multiple servers and try each of them until I find it. A more elegant solution would place the key in a DNS TXT record. I suspect I could use LDAP for this as well, but OpenLDAP and I have never really been on speaking terms. So does this make sense? I presume I can write a bash script to do all this at boot. Most of what will be stored in this partition is the PostgreSQL database in /var/lib/pgsql and perhaps some other files.

My understanding of encrypted file systems is that they are only encrypted when unmounted. When mounted they must be as visible to the operating system as an unencrypted partition. I suppose you could apply encryption to every single disk transaction, but that would require knowing the key all the time, and would seem to add a lot of overhead.
