I'd like to make a few changes to the keymap; disabling caps lock and a few other changes. First I tried what has worked before:
editing /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/pc
and commenting out a line there:
// key <CAPS> { [ Caps_Lock ] };
But changes in the xkb-files apparently only takes effect after login, and this particular system is set to autologin (i.e. it only works after I log out and log in again, not right after a reboot). I also tried putting
xmodmap -e "clear Lock" in one of the shell's startup-files (/etc/zsh/zshrc) No luck with that either. The above command works fine if I manually type it at the prompt, but for some strange reason it won't work in the shell startup script (and I know it has been executed since the lines before and after it in the script work fine).
I'm trying to design an inexpensive large scale DNS server but fail to find any metrics or methods to base scalabilty. Can anyone offer information on building a stable dedicated DNS server? That might be able to scale well.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI work with python and I use emacs as my IDE tool. I have been running Debian Squeeze (6.0.9) for some time now with emacs 23.2.1 and ecb 2.32. I am able to access my python methods in the ecb-methods window with no problems. However I recently upgraded my desktop to Debian Wheezy (7.5) running emacs 23.4.1 and ecb 2.40 but I have lost access to the methods in the ecb-methods window. The window is just empty while the others (directories, sources and history) are all populated. I have a second laptop which I decided to upgrade to Debian Jessie, however Jessie recommends emacs 23.4.1 which is running with ecb 2.40 also. The result is the same as on Wheezy.
I have used the ecb menus and googled for a solution or even just a mention that such a problem exists but have come up with nothing. Either I have a unique situation here or am doing something really dumb.
I would like to upgrade to Wheezy or Jessie but I need access to methods in the ecb methods window. How to keep my upgrade and see the methods in the methods window of the ecb system ....

I had recently installed the kernel sources so that I could compile the VirtualBox kernel module to use well but I had not restarted afterwards. I had been using my system problem free until tonight when I decided to restart. I had no internet connection and through ifconfig showing only lo and ifup eth0 returning "device eth0 is not accessible", I discovered I had a bigger problem than at first thought. Then I discovered that no PCI devices other than video were working, and so I referred to /var/log/messages and discoverd a line stating that "/lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/modules.dep : no such file or directory.
All other entries in that directory were some version of 2.6.37.1-1.2.

I've got the following problem: I just noticed that there were just very few notifications about updating the system (usually there are damn many of them in a week) So I opened the update manager and clicked on "refresh list". The following result popped up: p,li{white-space:pre-wrap;}E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found First I thought, it would be just some kind of server problem, but it didn't stop. The next thing was to research the thread and I even found something. However, the solution suggested didn't work at all. (Things, which might have caused this: I installed the default software center |I'm using Kubuntu, but in this case that fact doesn't matter| and used it. To sum up:
- not able to update the system referring to the launchpad main sources for 11.04
- following error: E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found It would be great if this was a common issue and I've been simply too stupid to find a proper solution. So you could just post the link.
I am running Jolicloud on my netbook (which I believe is an Ubuntu derivative) and I am tried to enter the getdeb.net sources in so I can install apps from the website through APT but
1) When I entered the sources into sources.list and then the key into Terminal and then went to the site and tried to install an app it didn't work.
2) I deleted the line of code in the sources.list file and when I opened terminal and entered "sudo apt-get update" it showed the list of sources, but on the list were Getdeb.net sources.
My question is how do I delete sources that aren't in /etc/apt/sources.list ?
I am installing a hp officejet pro 8500 all in one printer to knoppix 6.0.1. install hangs saying i need to disable cd sources in etc/apt/source.list. How do i do this?

The following is a rough output of all the methods I have tried with no success. As you can see I have done some extensive research first before posting here.
Now its become a lil bit of an obsession.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have to execute certain commands (like shutdown Tomcat) on several servers so I'm using a loop and ssh. I put the server's IP on a CSV file which I parse, execute the commands for each line and send the output to a file. The problem is that after processing one line the program stops execution. I wonder if someone could lend me a hand with this, I'm new in bash scripting and I ran out of ideas.
The CSV (servers.csv) file looks like this:
Code:
192.168.254.5:Server 1
192.168.254.6:Server 2
...
And the script looks like this:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
while IFS=: read ip name
do
sshpass -p "pass" ssh -o "StrictHostKeyChecking no" root@"$ip" 'sh <CATALINA_BASE>/bin/shutdown.sh' >> output.log

I run some IT systems for my schools Engineering student organization.
We are upgrading our systems and I just purchased a new server system which I am configuring.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and the new likewise-open packages.
The points I bring up following this sentence are to fulfill this final goal : Get SFTP, SSH, and Network Share's over our private network all using the schools Active Directory for auth and it's groups to derive privs.
So... Here's what i've done and what i've tried to do.
1 ) I set up likewise-open and got it to join the domain. When I do this I can ssh to localhost as 'schoolnetworkADname'. So that part works (hurray). To get a network share to use these same auth methods I have tried installing likewise-open-server. Everything launches find and the daemons run, but when I go into computer management on a windows server to set up the actual shares, I get permission denied. The account it is giving permission denied to is the same AD account that join likewise-open to the network, so... what is going on.
2 ) Samba, fail. I can't seem to get samba to run on this machine at all, which is strange because even my Samba expert was puzzled. It just won't let Samba join the domain properly, and due to this, I want to keep on the newer likewise package... unless I have to switch to this.
How I can get the lame likewise-open-server to work?
So I have forgotten my password, like a moron, and have been trying to reset/recover it.
I have found the plethora of sites giving instructions on how to reset my password, such as psychocats.net
So have gotten into the root shell and this is what I type.
ls /home
(gives me the name of my account)
passwd (my account here)
unknown user (account name here)
I have also tried doing the editing the boot kernel.
I add this: rw init=/bin/bash
Once I restart I get the root@(none) command prompt. Then I type passwd (username here) and get back ' unknown user
I've created encryption systems on servers, but nearly always I have stored the password somewhere on the machine itself. The file is always 0600 to the relevant user, but a systematic analysis of my system could easily find the scripts that invoke decryption and discover the password. (The most blatant example of this is mounting SMB shares with the "-o credential_file" option where both the username and password are plain-text. In the cases where I've used this, the security of the share hasn't particularly mattered.)
Soon I might be faced with storing "patient health information" (PHI in the healthcare world) whose privacy is heavily regulated by the provisions of the US law called HIPAA. I've been thinking about creating an encrypted partition to hold the PHI, but I need a highly fault-tolerant method for obtaining the key from a different machine than tha server itself. At first, I thought about running a script using scp and shared keys to copy the key from the remote, use it to decrypt the partition, then erase it. I'd like to be able to do this with a pipe; otherwise I'll write the key in a non-persistent location like /dev/shm.
I need more than one machine to make this work to ensure I can obtain the key when needed (like at boot). One solution is to place copies of the key on multiple servers and try each of them until I find it. A more elegant solution would place the key in a DNS TXT record. I suspect I could use LDAP for this as well, but OpenLDAP and I have never really been on speaking terms. So does this make sense? I presume I can write a bash script to do all this at boot. Most of what will be stored in this partition is the PostgreSQL database in /var/lib/pgsql and perhaps some other files.
My understanding of encrypted file systems is that they are only encrypted when unmounted. When mounted they must be as visible to the operating system as an unencrypted partition. I suppose you could apply encryption to every single disk transaction, but that would require knowing the key all the time, and would seem to add a lot of overhead.
I installed 10.10 on my machine a few months ago and everything was great. However, as of one month ago, every so often when I boot up my computer I get no sound in Ubuntu. This is not an easily reproducible error, as far as I can tell, but is a pain to fix. The previous times this happened I messed around, tried some commands shown in other help threads, and then eventually re-adjusted the "Profile" setting for the output devices in the "Sound Preferences" utility, which brought back the sound. I have never conclusively been able to determine the source of the problem, or how to resolve it. Now it is happening again and I have been unable to restore the sound with my primitive methods.
I just came back to the tiny village where I live to be near my workplace, and am missing my family - I just want to eat my dinner and watch some Buzzcocks with sound* - can anyone help please? Ideally I'd like to identify the source of the problem, fix it, and make sure it does not happen again.
During my travels of the forums I came across a troubleshooting script thing which I ran. The output, if it is of any use, is located here:[URL]...*Alright, this is a bit melodramatic, but the alternative is booting up in Windows, and no-one wants to see that happen,
first of all: I am not sure, if this is the right forum, as I don't know, if it is Slackware-relatedm, or if it is a general thing affecting other distros with KDE, as well. If the latter is the case, please let me know, where to post this (Linux Software or Linux Desktop forum?). BTW, I am on Slackware64-13.1 (stable). Currently, I am trying to copy all my music CDs on a harddisk. I thought, this would be a very simple thing to do, but whatever I do I run into another issue.

how to get IBus input methods to work in Adobe Flash Player? I want to type foreign characters in SharedTalk, a language exchange website which unfortunately runs entirely on Flash, but pressing ctrl-space to activate IBus does nothing and I can only type in Latin characters.
Or if it's possible by using something other than ibus, I'd also be interested.
I did a search but I can only find threads like [URL]this which refer to older Flash versions and claim that it's fixed now.
After much searching and trying of more complicated methods for changing the GRUB-PC background image, i found method that seems to work. The simplest one! I installed grub2-splashimages, which created a new folder in /usr/share/images, called grub. From there it appears to be as simple as adding the image of your choice, then adding "GRUB_BACKGROUND=/usr/share/images/grub/your_image" to "/etc/default/grub" file, the running "update-grub", of course.
Only problem is it doesnt work for the image i really want. So my question: What qualities should an image have if it is to be successfully used as a GRUB-PC (GRUB 2?) background? I have read that you do not need to resize the image anymore, indeed i tried resizing it to match the size a default image form the "/usr/share/images/grub" folder , and saving it with the extension .tga in Gimp and it did not work. The image i want to use is quite large, it is also black and white/grey-scale and in the .png format.
Recently, my fraternity decided to use our LAN to stream media to our various bars, lounges and ballroom. Some of our playback devices, including an iPhone and a laptop, broke during a party, which is why we decided to have portable devices replaced with sturdy, interchangable and fixed hardware.
As this is going to cost some money and effort, we had better make a fully thought-through plan, which I am in charge of. Still, having never organized a project of any measurable magnitude, I would rather have this plan commented on here.
So far, I am planning to buy one central PC (2GHz, 512 MB RAM) acting as a server, and four identical PCs (1GHz, 256 MB RAM) acting as clients. The former would a) provide local files, stored an an external encrypted hard drive, and b) act as a NFS and SMB client to private systems in the same LAN to incorporate (and forward) data stored on those (as to provide one central point to change the configuration for their use). Futhermore, it would host /etc, /usr and /home of the individual clients to provide that at all times, the same software and drivers are used on all of them. The clients then would mount /etc, /usr and /home from the server, alongside with the both the directories on its external HDD and the ones it had itself mounted from other PCs. Each of them would have to be able to play back music, video files and terrestrial TV from a USB stick, with at most two of them doing so at a time.
Is this a realistic scenario? I so, would you have any recommendations for changes and could you point out pitfalls? The whole lot would have to be rather secure, as usually, there are lots of people coming and going, and we don't want our private data corrupted. If not, where did I go wrong? How would you yourself build a system like that?
And last, what software would you use? Is there a window manager which would be able to act solely as a means to display the three icons needed for TV, video, and music, and make it impossible to tamper with the system? And what programs would you use for playback to ensure maximum performance?
P.S.: Not that I'd suspect so, but is there a german lawyer present? Provided the individual files we play are in our legal posession, this is a legal scenario, isn't it? There would only be friends and other frats present at any public display.

I'm trying to run a command or rather a shell script provided by a vendor that installs its products. The script is "installscape". After running the script, the command prompt returns, a window for installscape pops up but immediately closes. No other messages or notification is provided. This used to work on this machine, so I'm being told by the vendor that it's my OS install. Is there any way I can get more visibility into what's going on as I run this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop -- clean HD, no other partitions.
(It's odd, though; when I go to System -> About Ubuntu, it tells me I have version 11.04 Natty Narwhal.)
Anyhow, when switching on my laptop, a short drumming sound effect can be heard when the login prompt appears on the GUI.
There are numerous threads on the Internet explaining various methods to disable this. I have done everything as instructed in these threads to no avail, including:
1) System -> Administration -> Login Screen -> Unlock -> [enter password] -> make sure "Play login sound" is unchecked (it was already) -> Close
2) System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> uncheck "Gnome Login Sound" -> Close
3) System -> Preferences -> Sound -> Sound Effects -> Alert volume -> check "Mute" -> Sound theme -> No sounds -> Close
It's foolproof, really. Nevertheless, when restarting the computer, the drum sound is heard again at the login prompt.
I realize I can simply find and delete the sound files, but isn't that a bit harsh? Surely there must be a more elegant way to silence the login.
