Slackware :: KDE4.4.5 Crashes When Starting Language Settings In Systemsettings?
Dec 3, 2010
I am trying to switch to KDE4.4.5 on my main machine. I installed the KDE packages and also the german language file. Everything works fine except the language settings. When I try to start it crash and a KDE crash dialog opens that gives this "developer information":
Code:
Application: System Settings (systemsettings), signal: Segmentation fault
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/gdb/auto-load/usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0.2200.5-gdb.py", line 9, in <module>
from gobject import register
[code].....
It works on my netbook. I run on both machines Slackware 13.1. The only difference I can think of is that KDE was pre-installed on my netbook and I just upgraded it. On my main machine I installed all packages except the packages of kde and kdei.

they worked once (probably stopped late Aug), I am running KDE4 unstable, gnormalize, vlc, etc work fine so the cd reader is working and seen by the os when I run audex or k3b I get the errors below and the apps crash, I've searched and posted bugs but what I can't understand is why me and no one else (paranoia?), does anyone have any idea? if I try to view in Dolphin I get "the process for the audio cd protocol died unexpectedly". Common error seems to be "QSocketNotifier: Invalid socket 10 and type 'Read', disabling.

Running Fedora 13 with KDE4 the 'run command' dialog box (ALT-F2) crashes pretty often. Sometimes it just hangs for several seconds. I'm running a pretty standard from DVD setup here with only the NetworkManager and knetworkmanager updated from the Updates repository. It's company policy that we try to stick to the DVD as much as possible without any updates, it helps us to keep our laptops in a well-defined state and avoid conversations like "why is package abc on laptop a version 1.512.5501a5 but 1.512.5502b1 on laptop b?".The question is simple:Does anyone know what KDE package that run command dialog box is part of? I'd like to update only that one particular package to get this problem solved, updating the entire system is not an option.

how can I make KDE applications to use duplex printing as default? In CUPS, I changed the default settings to "long edge binding". It works in non-KDE Applications like Openoffice, but in e.g. Okular I always have to set it every time I print. I'm using Suse 11.3 with KDE4.

Whenever I open a Konsole via the control panel widget the font in the console window is Monospace 8. Increasing the font via settings remains in place only for the time the window is active. When opening Konsole again the font is set to tiny Monospace 8 again. I have checked the settings in the *.profile files in ~ /.kde4/share/apps/konsole. They all contain my preferred font. Still, Monospace 8 comes up. Where else should I look. I have checked all *.rc files too, that are related to konsole.

I wanted to know a way to transfer all my KDE4 settings to all users in the system. I have tried to copy the settings to /etc/skel but the only problem I am having is whenever any new user tries to access their home folder, they come to my home folder because link to home folder is "file:///home/<my user name>".

I was using the open source ATI drivers and KDE's compositing worked, so I hadn't installed compiz. I wanted to try fglrx because I thought a) I might be able to get temperature readings, and b) it might stop Kubuntu from making my computer incredibly hot (in Windows 7 it stays cool). So I installed fglrx by enabling it in the restricted hardware drivers thing, and things worked, but compositing was disabled and no matter what I did I couldn't enable it. So I installed compiz. When I run compiz, I get the following output:
Code:
toby@tensile:~$ compiz --replace
Starting kde4-window-decorator

If I start my VirtualBox on Ubuntu 11.04 it crashes 50% of the time... The whole system hangs, even the music keeps playing the last 2 seconds over and over... I can't find useful information in the Log File Viewer. I'm using seperate X screens, maybe it has something to do with that?

I have a java service that needs to be run in a gnu screen session so that I can -r into it to access it's interactive shell. I would like this to run at start-up. More importantly, it crashes frequently so I need the service to restart itself when it crashes. How do I go about doing this myself? My previous experience with shell scripting amounts to putting ./service in a file and marking it executable. This will be running on a FreeBSD server, but I might put it on a Linux server soon also. So any caveats on the differences would be useful information.

I loaded the Pre-Release version of Ubuntu 10.10.1 32 bit workstation. It ran mostly fine for about a 2 months. Then I did an online update and it told me that I had to reboot. When I did, I booted to a splash screen and then a dead machine with a black screen where control-alt-delete does nothing, no disk activity, no mouse, no keyboard, totally dead. Had to hit reset button. I booted to a suse partition and hacked the grub entry to remove the splash and silent to get more spew at boot time. The last thing before the screen goes black is starting NBD client. I have my email and various directories on my central server so I need NFS. Is there a way I can hack my way to get it to boot even without NFS temporarily to possibly rebuild the nbd kernel module? I have looked at the /var/log/ syslog, daemon, debug, kern messages and gdm log files and don't see any indication of why it crashed. Where else can I look?

I did a clean install, and so far I haven't noticed any serious problems with KDE4, although I can't find what I'm looking for, usually. I don't use my laptop much though. I also did a clean install on another system to 13.0 about the same time. X won't start on that system, it can't figure out the hardware I guess.
So I've just been using the command line. I don't really need a graphical interface on that system anyway. Right now I'm using the motherboard graphics support, but I will probably install a video card in a PCI-E slot and try X again. The system that I just upgraded from 12.2 (LUKS encrypted volumes and LVM) to 13.0 tonight has a number of problems. This was an upgrade, not a clean install. Based on my experience so far on this system, KDE4 does not seem to be ready for prime time. It is buggy, the menu system is more difficult to navigate than KDE3, and there are some apps I just can't find (e.g., Kedit). Overall it seems to have fewer apps than KDE3. Either that or they are well hidden well enough that I can't find them. My first impression was that KDE4 had clean lines and a modern appearance.......

My screen saver crashes.Even trying to look at the screensaver in the desktop settings crashes. The crashhandler says "This backtrace appears to be of no use. This is probably because your packages are built in a way which prevents creation of proper backtraces, or the stack frame was seriously corrupted in the crash. System configuration startup check disabled.

How do i re size my Slackware partition without deleting it and starting over, I'm new to Slackware and the work i have done i don't feel like doing again.I have set my swap and my actual HDD partition for Slackware to +8048M, I am correct in saying that fdisk can only delete and start fresh, I was a Ubuntu/Fedora user if i could get something like Gparted up that would be great but i don't mind some reading and learning some more terminal based stuff.Planning on working out the kinks and dealing with the learning curve, Love to learn.

I installed AlienBob's KDE 4.6.2 a few days ago to give it a shot.
I'm really satisfied with it and wish to keep it, but there's one thing bugging me : I can't write to my NTFS USB drives.
To be precise, I can write as much as I want to existing files, but I can't add nor delete files nor directories.
Worse, root isn't allowed either, even in runlevel 1 when mounted by hand (mount -t ntfs /dev/sde1 /mnt/foo).
Did I miss something to configure among the dependencies of KDE 4.6 ?
Output of /var/log/messages

Every KDE4 application seems to take over the sound card. If I'm playing a song in Amarok and launch Dragon Player, the song stops. If I'm playing a song in an xterm using "mplayer -ao alsa" and then launch Dragon Player, the song stops. Most annoying of all, if I'm playing music in _anything_ and then a notification sounds in Kopete, the music stops. However, if I launch two xterms and play two different MP3s by running "mplayer -ao alsa" in each one, both songs play. So software mixing is working with my sound card.
This made me wonder if KDE is outputting music through OSS instead of ALSA. Well, KDE's audio backend is set to xine, and xine is outputting through ALSA. Under System Settings->Multimedia->Audio Ouput, the only devices I see.
