Mar 4, 2011If I use Dosbox in full screen mode, and then exit back to KDE, my desktop icons get shuffled around.I'm using the desktop folder view in KDE 4.4.3I've noticed that this also happens with ScummVM as well, so I think it's more a KDE issue?

Aug 29, 2010how to remove the '.desktop' suffix appended to my icons? I unintentionally installed the 64-bit S13.1 when I wanted the 32-bit version - anybody notice the misleading text around the hole on the DVD? The 'Slackware 13.1 (amd64)' side is the 32-bit and the 'Slackware 13.1 (1386)' side is actually the 64-bit version. It fooled me, anyway, and after finding out how limited software choice was I spat the dummy and went back to 32 :/ But...with Desktop Settings>Activity set to 'Folder View' I now have this unwanted suffix added to my icons. Also, if I'm in my home directory via Dolphin and I create new folders they also appear out on the desktop!

Jun 19, 2010This works on my Slackware64 13.1 using KDE 4.4.4, Conky version 1.8.0. This is a simple .conkyrc tweak that doesn't need feh, it doesn't have the distracting faun shadow-border and most importantly, it doesn't disappear when you click your desktop (On my system anyway). These are the relevant sections to edit:

I found that getting rid of the own_window_argb_values yes suggested in other fixes and replacing it with a specific alpha and then changing window type to override solved all my issues. I've noticed no bugs or strange happenings. This seems to be a common problem with a lot of workaround solutions. I think this is a much more elegant way. Edit: Not persistant... After 2 reboots it's back to normal.
OpenSUSE :: Desktop Mirrored On KDE4 Desktop?
Jan 30, 2011Turned on my computer this morning only to have my desktop come up as if I was looking in a mirror. The icons and taskbar etc are in the correct places, only everything is a mirror image. This is a per user problem as my wife's account is fine. I have tried deleting all of the plasma files in the ./config directory with no luck. KDE 4.5 on openSUSE 11.3NVidia graphics if that matters

Nov 16, 2010I need to show an output of the command "show interface status" executed on a server side in new window on client side. In other words: on client side web browser page I would like to have a link which I can click and get output of command "show interface ... status" in a new window. On web server script has to connect to switch/router, execute this command and send output to client window.
where to look, and, may be explain, what can be better for this purpose? I need a clue, because I have newer done it before. It should not be snmp, because I want to view many different outputs and snmp wont help me.

Jan 26, 2011I Just Installed Opensuse 11.3 on Dell INSPIRON N5010 laptop in dual boot with windows 7 installed.The laptop boot up(OpenSuse GUI is seen during boot) to run level 5 with only two errors;1. Failed service in runlevel 5 nscd2. Skipped services in runlevel 5 cif nfs.there after it give me a login in in like command line(no GUI mode loaded but on the background I see the OpenSuse Icons like the desktop was loaded), I can login in a that command line and get the laptop receive IP and do other service like ssh/telnet and other command line functionality but I don't have the KDE4 Desktop to allow me launch applications in GUI mode

Feb 7, 2010I just installed pardus with kde4 and there's the ability to have "widgets" but i can't seem to scatter any files across the desktop. There're files in my /home/rabbit/Desktop folder but they don't show up on the desktop. I just want to know if this is just how kde4 is supposed to work?It seems odd if it is. I think the whole point of the desktop is to have commonly used files and programs just laying about

Jul 11, 2010For some time now, that the "Run command" window (which pops up when clicking alt+F2) doesn't show the 4 buttons, it shows just an empty black rectangle.
I have another system which is installed with the same kde4.4.5 rpms and I don't have this problem. I went over kde configuration files and can't find the cause.

I recently noticed that when pressing alt+tab to scroll between windows, only the icon of the window is highlighted when in the 2nd machine there is a bounding box which the surrounds the icon and the text.

Mar 1, 2010I have installed Alien Bob's KDE4.4 packages and have eveything almost in working order. However I am getting a nepomuk warning that says that the sesame2 database is not working or something to that effect. Has anyone else come across this problem?

Jan 3, 2010I did a clean install, and so far I haven't noticed any serious problems with KDE4, although I can't find what I'm looking for, usually. I don't use my laptop much though. I also did a clean install on another system to 13.0 about the same time. X won't start on that system, it can't figure out the hardware I guess.
So I've just been using the command line. I don't really need a graphical interface on that system anyway. Right now I'm using the motherboard graphics support, but I will probably install a video card in a PCI-E slot and try X again. The system that I just upgraded from 12.2 (LUKS encrypted volumes and LVM) to 13.0 tonight has a number of problems. This was an upgrade, not a clean install. Based on my experience so far on this system, KDE4 does not seem to be ready for prime time. It is buggy, the menu system is more difficult to navigate than KDE3, and there are some apps I just can't find (e.g., Kedit). Overall it seems to have fewer apps than KDE3. Either that or they are well hidden well enough that I can't find them. My first impression was that KDE4 had clean lines and a modern appearance.......

Dec 5, 2010i've 6 desktops, with a lot of icons organiced over themnyone in the place i like.Sometimes (once a mont or so) when i boot mi computer, all the icons on all the desktops apears reorganiced: All on the left side of the screen and all equally spaced. I don't want it to happen anymore because each time it happens i lose half an hour reorganicing them.I've tried to mark in the desktop the option "icons fixed", and I've tried to update KDE to the repo KDE instead of the one in the OSS repo, but nothing works, lately instead of disorganicing the icons once a week it happens each 3 to 7 days.

May 11, 2011I installed AlienBob's KDE 4.6.2 a few days ago to give it a shot.
I'm really satisfied with it and wish to keep it, but there's one thing bugging me : I can't write to my NTFS USB drives.
To be precise, I can write as much as I want to existing files, but I can't add nor delete files nor directories.
Worse, root isn't allowed either, even in runlevel 1 when mounted by hand (mount -t ntfs /dev/sde1 /mnt/foo).
Did I miss something to configure among the dependencies of KDE 4.6 ?

Slackware :: KDE4 Can Only Play One Audio Stream
Apr 2, 2010Every KDE4 application seems to take over the sound card. If I'm playing a song in Amarok and launch Dragon Player, the song stops. If I'm playing a song in an xterm using "mplayer -ao alsa" and then launch Dragon Player, the song stops. Most annoying of all, if I'm playing music in _anything_ and then a notification sounds in Kopete, the music stops.However, if I launch two xterms and play two different MP3s by running "mplayer -ao alsa" in each one, both songs play. So software mixing is working with my sound card.
This made me wonder if KDE is outputting music through OSS instead of ALSA. Well, KDE's audio backend is set to xine, and xine is outputting through ALSA. Under System Settings->Multimedia->Audio Ouput, the only devices I see.
Slackware :: KDE4 Wicd Startup - Turn Off?
Mar 13, 2010I once had wicd running at KDE startup as I was just playing around with it. The problem is I now have turned off rc.wicd and don't want to use wicd any more. Every time I start KDE it still asks for the root password which I cancel and it then tells me it can't connect to wicd's dbus. This is getting really annoying as I have been trawling through my ~ looking for the setting that starts this up. I just want wicd turning off completely and this message to go away.

May 27, 2010I installed 13.1 last night and started playing with KDE4.4.3. I'm talking about Konqueror as a file manager only here. My default view is to have the folder tree in the left pane, with a detailed view pane on the right. In KDE3, I use the "Tree List View".In KDE3, I had my mouse set to "double-click to open files and folders". However, in KDE3's konqueror, you could still navigate the folder tree with a single click. One click on a folder in the left pane would show the folder's contents in the right pane, or a double click in the left pane would expand the tree to show subdirectories. I could still single-click on files in the right pane to highlight them without opening them.
In KDE4's konqueror, it requires a double-click to do anything with the folders, either to display in the right pane or expand the tree. It's a lot more effort just to get around in the folder tree. I found the Mouse setting in the System Settings that changes overall single-click/double-click behavior. If it's on single-click, it's easier to navigate the folder tree but then I end up opening files I don't want to just by trying to highlight them with a click.I dug through Konqueror's settings in both KDE3 and KDE4 but couldn't find what gave me behavior I liked in KDE3 or how to duplicate it in KDE4. In KDE3, the system setting is on double-click, but there doesn't seem to be a konqueror-specific mouse setting to customize it. Anyone else notice this? Is this hard-coded into konqueror, and it changed from 3 to 4?

This happens as both normal user and root. Googling around seems to suggest this error is tied to a Kauth/PolicuKit/polkit problem, which aren;t provided yet in Slackware as far as I am aware.
Debian Multimedia :: Unresponsive Desktop In KDE4 With K3b - Squeeze
Aug 23, 2010I'm running Squeeze with KDE 4.4.5 in my desktop. Everything seems to be fine, except for some unresponsiveness that is really annoying. The main problem (but this also reflects on other uses, though in a less intense manner) is when K3b is burning or erasing anything (including CD-R and CD-RW). The whole system becomes unusable. Not even a Konsole window can return from a "aptitude search something" query.
I have a Intel i7 920 system with 6GB RAM and two 1.5TB disks. I use an AMD Radeon 4890 video card with their proprietary drivers (at least for now it is the only option). I also have an extra Audigy sound card. I thought that such a system would be enough to have a good desktop experience while multitasking. What might be wrong?
Ubuntu :: Vanishing Plasmoid Desktop Folder (KDE4.x)
Mar 20, 2010When kubuntu is installed, there is a plasmoid desktop (a kind of transparent window that enables one to create and store links to applications). Nice and convenient.
Alas, the special desktop is easily hidden - permanently... Soon after the installation I inadvertently clicked the X on the plasmoid desktop pop up menu and that hid this special desktop.
In the file manager (Dolphin) I can still see the Desktop with all the links to applications, which are still active (I can run the applications by clicking their icons).
Surely there is a simple way to restore this plasmoid again to the view, but I just do not find how..
If you have kubuntu, you too can have "the fun" of hiding the plasmoid dekstop and then finding how to show it again. Just place you mouse pointer on the plasmoid desktop. That will pop up the menu with X, shift-spanner, turning and resize buttons. If you are brave, try to click X on the pop up menu. Bingo, the plasmoid disappears. Surely fingers more nimble than mine, would find out how to get it back... I can not.
how did you restore the plasmoid to the view.
