If I start my VirtualBox on Ubuntu 11.04 it crashes 50% of the time... The whole system hangs, even the music keeps playing the last 2 seconds over and over... I can't find useful information in the Log File Viewer. I'm using seperate X screens, maybe it has something to do with that?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI loaded the Pre-Release version of Ubuntu 10.10.1 32 bit workstation. It ran mostly fine for about a 2 months. Then I did an online update and it told me that I had to reboot. When I did, I booted to a splash screen and then a dead machine with a black screen where control-alt-delete does nothing, no disk activity, no mouse, no keyboard, totally dead. Had to hit reset button. I booted to a suse partition and hacked the grub entry to remove the splash and silent to get more spew at boot time. The last thing before the screen goes black is starting NBD client. I have my email and various directories on my central server so I need NFS. Is there a way I can hack my way to get it to boot even without NFS temporarily to possibly rebuild the nbd kernel module? I have looked at the /var/log/ syslog, daemon, debug, kern messages and gdm log files and don't see any indication of why it crashed. Where else can I look?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a java service that needs to be run in a gnu screen session so that I can -r into it to access it's interactive shell. I would like this to run at start-up. More importantly, it crashes frequently so I need the service to restart itself when it crashes. How do I go about doing this myself? My previous experience with shell scripting amounts to putting ./service in a file and marking it executable. This will be running on a FreeBSD server, but I might put it on a Linux server soon also. So any caveats on the differences would be useful information.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to switch to KDE4.4.5 on my main machine. I installed the KDE packages and also the german language file. Everything works fine except the language settings. When I try to start it crash and a KDE crash dialog opens that gives this "developer information":

It works on my netbook. I run on both machines Slackware 13.1. The only difference I can think of is that KDE was pre-installed on my netbook and I just upgraded it. On my main machine I installed all packages except the packages of kde and kdei.
Software center, update manager, Synaptic package manager crashes for no reason. I have not done any recent changes or downloads. I'm running a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04
5 gigs of ram
Intel dual core

I have centos on Microsoft Virtual PC 2007.
yesterday i updated my CentOS 5.4 with command "yum update" and today it won't to start.
Shows processor error and needs to be resetted.
How to solve this issue??
I installed OS11.4 on my old laptop, Compaq Armada E500., 512MB RAM, ATI Rage Mobility. During installation I chose "minimal server" and added some development packages, lxde and a little more. I chose to start in runlevel 3 which is full networking without X. Still, when computer is booted it tries to start Xorg which doesn't work because of some problem w driver. The start-up seems to stop there, it never loads completely - seems most things in runlevel 3 are not started (see below) I can manually login on laptop and fix it - but never permanently, same thing again after reboot.
I have checked /etc/inittab & yast - both states default runlevel is 3. I have checked services to be started both directly, browsing directory /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/, and with YaST, it is very clear X should not load during boot. But, as said, it does.. I don't really care about the driver problem right now, I can fix that later when I have more time. So how do I stop X from getting started automatically?
More info, if needed: The installation also stopped with message on tty1 "Starting YaST2" and tty8 showing errors with graphics driver (mach64). The system seemed to be installed though, so I simply rebooted (issuing "reboot" from tty2).

I'm not completely sure where it stops, network is configured but keyboard is wrong and mysql & everything after is not started, so somewhere between S02network and S06kbd. I'm going to use it as a server for testing purposes so no X is actually needed - however I do want to have X & lxde installed just in case, my Internet connection at home is terribly slow so I need most things I might need in the future installed today.
I experimented with Mac4Lin over the weekend, and as much as I liked it, I decided (like I do most anything) to eventually revert back to the normal interface. The problem is, this has left me entirely unable to read any text in the Ubuntu Software Center, or in some dropdown menus (the "Prefix" dropdown menu for this post is unreadable). Included is a screenshot of what the Software Center looks like. I've already tried rebooting and uninstalling/reinstalling the software center with no luck. I can only assume there's a font setting somewhere that I need to tweak, but I can't find it at all. I'm running 10.04.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed 10.04 and things are working alright for the most part. My main problem is that the Software Center cannot seem to connect to the internet. It gets to 5% and stops, after a few minutes it says it "cannot connect, check your internet connection".
I am online posting this right now and I have no troubles downloading packages manually, but I would prefer to use the handy-dandy center. Any insight into this would be lovely. I'm pretty new to Ubuntu, and I just haven't encountered this before.
I have installet ubuntu lucid and it works fine.
After the installation of other user software like keepass and truecrypt, the software-center utility doesn't start.
I start it but the process start and after few second it exit from top utility. No screen output it doesn't start.
I tried to start in terminal and receive this log:

I seem to have broken the Ubuntu Software Center by adding the Linux Mint repositories and installing the mint-menu package. When I click on Ubuntu Software Center it changes my cursor and shows it in the windows list for about 10 seconds like it is going to open but never does. I tried removing the mint-menu package and all of the mint packages, I reinstalled software-center andall of the ubuntu keyring packages. Still not able to open the software center.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an older Biostar IDEQ 200N SFF computer for my son. I am by no means a linux expert and I am having a problem I can't seem to resolve on my own. I am using a CRT monitor, and the image on the screen is not aligned properly with the monitor. Everything seems shifted down about a quarter of an inch or less. Even the usual click areas are no right. What I mean that is order to click on a link or icon, you actually have to click slightly above it. I know the CRT monitor has screen adjustment controls, but this seems to be linux or hardware related. I have tried changing the resolution, and for a brief second after I change the res it does seem to correct the problem, but before I can even tell it to use the new settings, it shifts itself back down. What can I do? Do I need to install different drivers or something else?

View 5 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago I jumped into Ubuntu by installing 10.04 on an old PC. All was working fine until today. I have been trying things all do to fix this. When I try to install from the software center, nothing happens. Nothing! It worked fine before. I did an update early today. I have even updated one new update late today. But the software center will not install anything. The install button goes grey for about a second, then back to normal.
I went to System, Administration, Software Sources, Other Sources (tab), clicked partner - to rebuild the package info. That did not change anything. I am not sure how to update to 10.10 since I am new to Linux.
I believe I have deleted a dependency package to Ubuntu Software Center for 10.10. I just don't know how to fix it. When I try to launch the program from the terminal I get a bus error, I've tried removing and reinstalling it, but this does not solve it. Any one have ideas of how to fix this (other than just reinstalling ubuntu)?
