Fedora :: KDE4 The 'run Command' Dialog Box (ALT-F2) Crashes Pretty Often?
Aug 14, 2010
Running Fedora 13 with KDE4 the 'run command' dialog box (ALT-F2) crashes pretty often. Sometimes it just hangs for several seconds. I'm running a pretty standard from DVD setup here with only the NetworkManager and knetworkmanager updated from the Updates repository. It's company policy that we try to stick to the DVD as much as possible without any updates, it helps us to keep our laptops in a well-defined state and avoid conversations like "why is package abc on laptop a version 1.512.5501a5 but 1.512.5502b1 on laptop b?".The question is simple:Does anyone know what KDE package that run command dialog box is part of? I'd like to update only that one particular package to get this problem solved, updating the entire system is not an option.

I am trying to switch to KDE4.4.5 on my main machine. I installed the KDE packages and also the german language file. Everything works fine except the language settings. When I try to start it crash and a KDE crash dialog opens that gives this "developer information":
Code:
Application: System Settings (systemsettings), signal: Segmentation fault
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/gdb/auto-load/usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0.2200.5-gdb.py", line 9, in <module>
from gobject import register
[code].....
It works on my netbook. I run on both machines Slackware 13.1. The only difference I can think of is that KDE was pre-installed on my netbook and I just upgraded it. On my main machine I installed all packages except the packages of kde and kdei.

I was using the open source ATI drivers and KDE's compositing worked, so I hadn't installed compiz. I wanted to try fglrx because I thought a) I might be able to get temperature readings, and b) it might stop Kubuntu from making my computer incredibly hot (in Windows 7 it stays cool). So I installed fglrx by enabling it in the restricted hardware drivers thing, and things worked, but compositing was disabled and no matter what I did I couldn't enable it. So I installed compiz. When I run compiz, I get the following output:
Code:
toby@tensile:~$ compiz --replace
Starting kde4-window-decorator

have been trying to figure out the .basrhc files and decided to change some of the permission of those files. The outcome is that, when i restarted the computer, i try to log in as a user but once i typed the name and login only a black screen can be seen, and can not do anything. I restart the computer and try to log in as a root, the same thing.
Next time I restarted the computer and press ctrl+spack+backspace, and for less than 2 seconds i am shown the console windows and then automaticaly comes back to the X windows. It seems that console is crashing too. I am using fedora core 8 and i ve got information that i would not like to loose.

I'm running Suse 11.3 with KDE4.I have an icon in my Kickoff Application Launcher for xterm. WhenI click on the icon, it apparently executes the command /usr/bin/xterm which generates a large window with a large font.I would like to get a smaller window with a smaller font. I knowhow to do that on a command line but to execute the commandI need to _already_ have a window open so I can run the command. So how do I (a) add a new icon to the KDE launcher which generates the command I want or (b) change the existing iconso that it executes MY command and not the basic /usr/bin/xterm?

I know there has to be an easier way to do this than to download each file individually. On an ftp site I would just use
PHP Code...
But with those files being on an HTTP server and wget not supporting HTTP file globbing I'm at a loss.
What is a one step method to recursively download all files in a directory on an HTTP server?

Is there some "Run Command" dialog box program independent of desktop environment?
For example I would like my Openbox menu to have an item called "Run" that would pop up a dialog box in which I can type a command.

When ever I run Ubuntu 11.04 from the Live CD all works well and pretty. However, when ever I install it, my main monitor won't detect correctly and my second won't even display anything at all. Basically, Live CD runs perfect, Installation does not.
One other note: While running off the Live CD, there was no Unity. Running the actual installation, it is running Unity.. ?

For some time now, that the "Run command" window (which pops up when clicking alt+F2) doesn't show the 4 buttons, it shows just an empty black rectangle.
I have another system which is installed with the same kde4.4.5 rpms and I don't have this problem. I went over kde configuration files and can't find the cause.
Attached is a snapshot or the problem :
I recently noticed that when pressing alt+tab to scroll between windows, only the icon of the window is highlighted when in the 2nd machine there is a bounding box which the surrounds the icon and the text.

As a back story, my Thinkpad had two partitions on it; one with Windows Vista and one with Windows 7. But it can't find the boot files, and thus isn't starting up (I'm getting a remove media or other devices error). So I'm just trying to get it working by trying to download the Ubuntu ISO on another computer, burning it to a disk and then booting it up on my Thinkpad.
I downloaded the 32-bit ISO of Ubuntu. It's ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386, and it's 699MB, making me think that nothing is inherently wrong with the file I'm trying to burn. So I use InfraRecorder to burn it to an empty CD-R disk with 702MB of free space. (I tried using a DVD-R earlier, but switched over to CD-Rs after the DVD gave me the same problems that the CD-R is now giving me.) So I open up IR, find the ISO file, and burn it to the CD. Everything appears to work normally, and the disk pops out once it is done.
Now the Ubuntu website tells me that I can open up the CD-R file and check its contents, but I can't seem to do that, or at least on my computer. I put the disk back in (while running Vista on the computer I burned it on) and nothing happens, although I don't know if something is supposed to happen. I click on the DVD drive whilst in My Computer, and it pops out again (with the disk still in it) and tells me to insert a disk... whatever I think.
So maybe it's just not meant to work when already in Windows, but I put it into my Lenovo, boot from the CD/RW and am getting the same error. The specific error isn't really relevant, but rather the fact that it isn't even booting into Ubuntu. Clarifications: The integrity of the ISO file or the distribution are not the cause. I downloaded Linux Mint and encountered the same problem.
The computer burning the disk is not the problem. I used InfraRecorder and other burning software on two different computers, and both got to 100% and ejected the disk. The problem is that the disk is full, but not doing anything on either of the two computers I'm using to burn, and isn't booting up on my Thinkpad.

Some of you might have seen my thread about Gnome 3. My desktop and windows were a mess after Gnome 3, and I couldn't restore it back to Gnome 2 for some reason. I decided to check out Ubuntu Studio because I am a guitar player. I want to be able to record, but the desktop in ubuntu studio is stunning. It isn't graphically stunning, like ubuntu running Gnome 2 or 3, but it is simple. Everything is easy to get to and no nonsense. It is a joy to use.
If they improve the looks of the desktop and menus, I would be EXTREMELY happy. The look isn't that impressive, but the ease of use is great. One thing I noticed is that the average CPU usage went down when I switched to ubuntu studio. In regular ubuntu, my CPU would be using 15%-20% of its power when I wasn't running anything. In ubuntu studio, it is between 8%-13%.
I am pretty pleased with Ubuntu Studio. I am glad I made the switch. I just would like it to be a little more visually impressive.

I'm fairly new to using Linux. I just had a simple opinion based, question and one direct question: 1) What are some package options I can use to make my desktop environment prettier? I have Compiz Fusion installed, I use the cube and and Expo. I'd like to have background options for the expo and I'd like some better, Sci-FI-ish Themes under System>Preferences>Appearence. 2) As for what I need to know directly, I have a built in Microphone on my Laptop (Compaq 8510w) and I'm fairly sure I haven't installed a package or driver option to allow it to work for Skype ect... What might that/those package(s) be?

I have various text files -- some "source code", some "data files" -- that I'm formatting with enscript. Can someone answer some questions about use and workings of enscript?
1. How does enscript know which printer to use as a default? My command lines do not specify a printer but output makes its way to the system default printer. Neither PRINTER nor LPDEST are set in the environment. So what is enscript using to learn the default?
2. How do I get --landscape to work as an enscript option? Whatever enscript sends to the printer accomplished the N-up and other formatting, but the content appears portrait instead of landscape?
3. Running Ubuntu Lucid desktop, I also use CUPS and HPLIP for printing. Need to understand the interactions among the desktop CUPS and bash shell command line access to printing? I tried viewing the environment looking for printer and similar variables. 'set' showed a group of shell functions instead of environment variables. I'm confused.
Follow-up: The functions were all ImageMagick details. (blush) The variables went by so fast I missed them. Even so, I still don't find anything to tell 'enscript' which printer is default.

I suspect this is a Gnome 3 problem and not a Fedora problem, but I have no way to separate the two here. I cannot upload an image from my computer to Weebly or to Google Plus, but strangely enough, I can upload one to Picasa. The sequence of actions goes something like this:
1. Open Weebly editing interface, add a picture element, click on the element to edit/add a picture. It then gives you a choice: from your local computer, from the web, etc.
2. Click on 'from local computer' and my computer opens the Open File Dialog Window.I am guessing that is its name, it is the same window you get when opening a file in any other application, like Gedit or LibreOffice.
3. Navigate to the image I want to upload and double click on it or select 'Open'.
4. Nothing happens.
I am able to upload images from my laptop, running Linux Mint 11 with Gnome 2.
It sounds to me like the Open File Window is not passing on the necessary information to the browser. I have no idea why it works in Picasa and not in Google+ or Weebly.
I don't really expect anyone to have a solution just yet, but I wanted to mention it somewhere, and I didn't see any Gnome.org forums. On the other hand, if someone does have a solution, great.
This is by no means a knock on Gnome 3, it is fine with me and I Iike it a lot more than I thought I would.

I recently had to install Python 2.7 to run some specific cripts and so tried to uninstall Python 2.6 so that I didn't have to worry about path conflicts. It seems that when uninstalling the Python package it's stripped most of the apps from my installation, including fairly essential stuff like the terminal. It also seemed to stop accepting my password as a root user, though I'm hoping a reboot may fix that.
Can anyone provide a listing of the default packages that Ubuntu ships with please so I can try to repair my system? I tried looking through ones I might know but it appears for example that while Bash is installed I have no Terminal entry under Applications.

I'm having, oddly enough, stability problems on my main slackware desktop. Whenever I try to do certain things, for instance going fullscreen on a flash video, starting regnum online or open arena, it drops out of X into the command line with a few error messages (next time it crashes I'll post the messages). On occasion, it'll do that without any input. Now, there's a few major changes I've had on the desktop since yesterday, chiefly that I've been able to connect it to the net for the first time in a few months. Now because of this, I've been installing plenty of software from slackbuilds, plus flash from adobe (necessary evil). I'm using xfce with some compositing on a geforce Ti 4200 AGP 8x 64Mb with nvidia drivers installed and dual monitors, each now set to 1280x1024 and in twinview, pentium 4 2.8Ghz, 1 GB ram. HDD has a 70GB ext3 slack partition, triple booting with 80GB ext4 ubuntu lucid partition and 40GB ext4 mint isadora.

So I have a Logitech 9000 web cam installed and working (again) with Skype. That's great when I want to video chat with family, but that's all I can do with it. I would like to record some movies using my web cam but I can't because of the following reasons:
1. I can't find an application for Linux that actually works. So far they all fail to work for a variety of reasons.
2. The ones that sort of work, don't allow me to do what I want, record a video with my web-cam and save the file for future use or distribution.
I just want a simple application that allows me to click on record, stop recording and save. Why isn't there anything around that can do that? Seriously, this is something I have been looking for since, 2001. And so far I have only found one application that kind of worked, but it's no longer developed and I can't find it anymore.
[Code]...
So let's recap. In another thread I am trying to get .wmv files to play (they work on one system but not another?) and none of the applications for web cams work as I want. Oh, and wine? It's a joke, not one application I have tried to run with wine works. The either just don's start OR they start but half the components never paint and it runs like a flea in frozen molasses.
I am a bit frustrated and rather tired of not being able to easily do what Windows folk can do with relative ease. Something wrong with that. And I haven't even begun to tack text to speech yet.

I ran a yum update this morning on my Fedora 10 box (i386), which updated the 'nfs-utils' package from 1.1.4-4.fc10 to 1.1.4-6.fc10. Before the update I was able to connect to the fedora NFS exports just fine from my Macbook Pro running latest version of Leopard on a simple home network. After the update, when I try to connect to the NFS export it waits for a while at leopard's "Connecting to Server" dialog box, and after about a minute I get a message saying "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct" (though my UID's are the same on both systems). My /etc/exports and /etc/sysconfig/nfs files were unchanged by the update. I tried restarting the nfs services as well as shutting down iptables and setting SELinux to permissive, etc. with no success.
I get the following in /var/log/messages (192.168.1.102 is the address of my macbook):
I was able to download the RPM for the older version of nfs-utils and then do a 'yum localinstall' to revert to the older version. This fixed my issues completely and my setup works as it did before. However I am curious to know why the latest version of nfs-utils breaks my setup, and whether it is a problem with my setup or if I should just wait for the next version to come out and see if the same thing happens.
Here is my /etc/exports file. If I understand this correctly it should allow connections from anyone with an IP address on my local network.
