View 1 RepliesI've installed Lucid, and so far the only problem I'm having repeatedly is that my appearance settings aren't saving. Every time I reboot I have to change the visual effects from "none" to "normal", whereupon it searches for drivers and changes the settings. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on my Dell laptop, and on my Appearance/visual effects tab I've selected None. But when I reboot, it changes by itself to Normal. How can I make it stay on None?Edit: I just created another user on this pc. After reboot it stays on None for this user, suggesting it's a per-user setting I need to fix, not a system wide one.
View 5 Replies View RelatedHere is a description of my problem:I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop with the default Ambiance theme. I have my bottom panel deleted and instead use Docky.Sometimes on boot/reboot one of a few things happens.Either:1)My Ambiance theme loads, then...unloads?My top panel and all Nautilus windows turn to a flat gray "theme" as if I guess there are no appearance settings enabled. If I open appearance settings my panel returns to theme without doing anything else, but my Nautilus windows are still out of theme.2)My Docky bar never loads up and I have to start it manually, it then loads/works fine as if nothing is wrong.3)Both problems 1 & 2 combined.
My setup is Ubuntu 10.04 64bit running on an Athlon x2 3.0GHz with 8gig of DDR2 dual channel RAM and a Geforce 9800GTX+ video card. I had the latest factory NVidia driver installed and figured that might be causing the problem. I switched an older release of the NVidia driver last night to see if that fixes anything, but being an intermittent problem only a few days use will tell. I would not use the NVidia drivers at all, but I figured I would not be able to use Docky as it requires compositing to be enabled (which I was under the assumption were under the special effects that I need the NVidia driver for).
When i install a mouse theme via appearance settings it only works in firefox and other applications. The theme does not work on my desktop and other various places.I have viewed other threads regarding this error and the only fix would be to change the mouse theme in ccsm but fore some odd reason i do not have the option to change mouse themes in ccsm, i have looked everyware in ccsm and i can not find anyware to change the mouse theme?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get familiar with this over the past 24 hours or so. I assume I've been somewhat successful in what I'm attempting to do, as I can work my way around a bit now and use some terminal commands. However, there is this display problem I seem to be encountering with certain windows which is extremely putting off. When I click options like 'File' or 'Edit' in a window, this is what I get. Here are the screenshots below.
This is what I get when I click the 'Volume' button in the Panel at the bottom of the screen. I have tried changing the Desktop Appearance Settings, Theme Settings but nothing seems to work. Although this is not a performance issue, it is hampering my vision of the various available options, and I would like to resolve it at once.
I tried out the 10.04 beta in VirtualBox, and the tab for Interface in Appearance Settings was gone. This tab allowed you to edit the appearance of Toolbars in Ubuntu. You could edit whether Icons showed up in the toolbar buttons and whether Text shows up beside it. This is kind of a minor annoyance for me; is there any way to edit this option outside of the appearance settings? I'm sure there is (like editing some config file or GConf), but I'm not sure where.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhenever I open a Konsole via the control panel widget the font in the console window is Monospace 8. Increasing the font via settings remains in place only for the time the window is active. When opening Konsole again the font is set to tiny Monospace 8 again. I have checked the settings in the *.profile files in ~ /.kde4/share/apps/konsole. They all contain my preferred font. Still, Monospace 8 comes up. Where else should I look. I have checked all *.rc files too, that are related to konsole.

It works on my netbook. I run on both machines Slackware 13.1. The only difference I can think of is that KDE was pre-installed on my netbook and I just upgraded it. On my main machine I installed all packages except the packages of kde and kdei.
When I go to Administration->Preferences->Appearance, the window pops up for a split second and is then gone. Attempting to open it again yields the same result. I have never had this issue before and haven't changed anything recently that I recall.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora where my old Ubuntu partition used to be (formatted the partition appropriately first). I have my home directory on a separate partition, so I asked Fedora to mount it as /home. Since I made my username the same as it had been in Ubuntu, I have basically all the same home directory in Fedora as I did in Ubuntu. This is desirable and it makes my life easier for obvious reasons, but something happened that I didn't expect.
All the settings (desktop background, top and bottom panels, keyboard preferences, etc.) have transferred over to Fedora. That's okay except that they just don't work as well in Fedora, and I'm stuck with sort of an ugly window scheme etc. I know it wouldn't be too hard to change all this stuff back manually, but I was wondering if there was a way to change it back the Fedora default appearance. Like my deleting a folder in the home directory or something?
When I click on a folder in "Places" the appearance editor starts up and says that for example "Home Folder" or "Documents" does not appear to be a valid theme. XDG-open has the same results. Folders on the desktop open fine. I am at a loss here, I can't figure out what I did.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to prevent users changing the wallpaper, as i couldn't found any direct method I thought of preventing the /usr/bin/gnome-appearance-properties being running,
I know that the user also can set the wallpaper without running that . But didn't found any other way .
I tried to use SELinux to it and I'm stuck at writing a own policy.
According to SELinux, it prevents everything ., but as i have mapped the user to a SElinux user ,even though he can use administrative tasks , he can run the appearance window. that means he has got the permission from a different policy , Currently I'm stuck at this place.
Suitable way to prevent the wallpaper being changed by the normal users.
Struggling to find right place to post, or for FAQs, or anything, because reading web browser is such a strain: can use Firefox v. happily in MS Windows, but, new to Linux and Fedora (14), I can't physically SEE where to start modifying appearance of either desktop or browser, which seem minute. I'm sure there's a really simple route if someone can just start me off.

I thought this would be possible with (and was part of the point of) KDE4's activities. Is it?
I used to be able to right click the desktop and then there would be an option to change themes. After I updated KDE that is now gone Does anyone know how to change KDE themes now?
View 1 Replies View RelatedEver since I have upgraded form fc 11 to 14, I cannot login using the KDE desktop, I am forced to use gnome. The problem with that is that KDE apps are not running well, slow and often crashing, when I try to use them under gnome.
Symptoms.
1. Attempting to log in as any user with either KDE or KDE failsafe selected brings up the KDE splash screen, the hard drive icon, and occasionally the wrench icon.. a long pause and then back to the login screen.
2. I have these problem described in other Linux forums and have attempted to implement their recommendations
2.1 Deleted the .kde and other directories associated with KDE, reinstalled KDE.
2.2 Checked the permissions on all the requisite files and directories to ensure that they were good.
2.4 Looked through endless log files for ANY clues.. none
3. KDE applications, like ocular, take about a minute to start up, respond very slowly and eventually stop responding. Gnome applications work normally.
