I wanted to know a way to transfer all my KDE4 settings to all users in the system. I have tried to copy the settings to /etc/skel but the only problem I am having is whenever any new user tries to access their home folder, they come to my home folder because link to home folder is "file:///home/<my user name>".

Increasing the font via settings remains in place only for the time the window is active. When opening Konsole again the font is set to tiny Monospace 8 again. I have checked the settings in the *.profile files in ~ /.kde4/share/apps/konsole. They all contain my preferred font. Still, Monospace 8 comes up. Where else should I look. I have checked all *.rc files too, that are related to konsole.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to switch to KDE4.4.5 on my main machine. I installed the KDE packages and also the german language file. Everything works fine except the language settings. When I try to start it crash and a KDE crash dialog opens that gives this "developer information":

It works on my netbook. I run on both machines Slackware 13.1. The only difference I can think of is that KDE was pre-installed on my netbook and I just upgraded it. On my main machine I installed all packages except the packages of kde and kdei.
when users login in kde4 it shows kstartconf4 not found or failed error code 127. for both suse 11. 1 and suse 11.2 but kde3 works well I removed .kde etc it still failed
View 5 Replies View RelatedAlright I couldn't explain it in the title for this post so I'll try to do my best here. As of right now I'm dual booting windows xp and ubuntu 9.04. Windows is on the c drive and ubuntu is on my g drive. They are both on the same hdd just different partitions. I have another hdd that I would like to install 10.04 onto and transfer over all of my settings (and files if possible) from 9.04 to the new installation of 10.04 on the new drive. Afterwords I'd like to uninstall 9.04 from the g drive and have that part of the partition back to continue storing programs and other files for windows. Basically I want each operating system to have their own hdd but I would like to transfer my settings from 9.04 to 10.04
Is this possible? I don't have MUCH that I don't want to lose on my current ubuntu, my main issue was that it took forever to get the wireless internet router to work and it finally does and I don't want to have to go through that again. I also don't want to lose my sound system settings because that took FOREVER to get working properly, and honestly I don't remember how I did it now, it was so long ago.
So if this is possible a little guidance would be great. If it's not possible let me know, I'll just start over fresh and clean with a new beginning and tinker around until I get everything working again.
I have no idea what to do to copy settings for programs, etc. to a new install of Ubuntu so that I don't have to do it all over again. When 10.10 releases, I would like to upgrade with a fresh install because upgrades sometimes bug out. Which folders do I copy/What is the best method of doing this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am administrating a system with about 40 or 50 users, and we recently jumped ship from windows to ubuntu. Most of my users are getting along fine, but it seems every few days, i have to help someone who accidentally changed something, and now their account (or more rarely, the machine) is unusable, and has to be reset.
I know configuring /etc/sudoers is a huge step toward fixing my problem, but that still will not completely solve it. What I would like to do is prevent users from making ANY changes to the system (aside from their work files and the like), including themes, icons, desktop, background, etc.
I have about 5 users for our desktop computer, 1 adult, 3 kids and me (I don't count as an adult ).
There are some settings I want to have each of the environments default to, where they can then change them as they wish on their own.
Instead of setting them one-at-a-time, is there a way to modify the settings on the template of what goes into a user's /home directory when they are created?
Examples:
Set it so when I add a person to the system theirdefault browser is set to Firefox starting home page is to our local server Open/Libre Office defaults to MS Office formats And others, less important ones like their pictures are placed in a centralized directory, not their own ~/Pictures.
After this initial setting, they are able to change any and all of these settings on their own, but to have these as default helps me set up their environments to get them started.
I want to apply the same settings of Gnome among a group of users. I configured a "master"-user and exported his Gnome settings using

While most of the settings were set properly, I am missing the links for Firefox and OpenOffice in the panel which I had configured. How I can copy the Gnome settings from one user to another, including links to Firefox and OpenOffice in the main panel?
I have a Debian machine running IceWM. I want to set it up so when userA signs in they get a screen resolution of 1280x1024 and normal size icons and normal size cursors. Then I want it setup so if UserB signs in they get a screen resolution of 800x600 larger icons and larger mouse cursor icons. How can I customize the display settings per user with IceWM? I did not see where I can set these options in ~/.icewm/preferences.
View 2 Replies View Relatedwe have a server running with Suse linux many years. Meanwhile we changed server hardware about 4 times, mostly also updating to newest Suse version. We used to copy group, passwd and shadow to a backup medium, installed the new system and restored those files onto the new system and all was running fine. Now, some weeks ago we installed 11. on new hardware and after restoring those 3 files after rebooting the system hangs when starting GUI. I can boot into runlevel 3 and login with no problem, but when I boot into runlevel 5 mouse and keyboard are frozen. Also when starting GUI from runlevel 3 with startx mouse and keyboard immediately freeze. If I restore the files group, passwd and shadow as they came from fresh new installation I can reboot and login in runlevel 5 without problems.
OK, if I compare the userlist, as it is generated bei installation,there are some usernames I formerly not had in older Suse versions. I don�t know if this can make problems? I tried to edit the files, to combine the system users from 11.2 with the list of local user names from the old system but without success, again the mouse and keyboard freeze.So some questions arise:1) Why now mouse and keyboard freeze in xsystem, when there are changes in the user list (but only in runlevel 5)2) What is the correct way to save and restore users and groups from old to new system. I googled several hours but did not find a smart way. Maybee someon can point me to a link or a howto where I find the solution
Having a bit of a issue with Debian Squeeze and transferring files to the Sony PSP..Hook up PSP to USB port and Debian mounts it..I go to drag a 125 meg mp4 to video folder..Copy windows takes about 10 seconds to transfer it..Exit USB mode and there is no video there. Go back into USB mode and look at video folder on the PSP memory stick and there is no video..It vanished. From another after copy progress closed I right clicked PSP and unmounted it..
It error-ed saying device was busy and could not unmount..Looking at light on PSP i see memory stick is still being written to..i wait for light to stop flashing..About a minute or so..Then am able to unmount it..Go to PSP video and theres the video ready to be watched. Debian isnt accurately showing the copy progress...Its showing complete when it isnt..I have to watch the light on PSP to know when it is truly finished.
using Slackware 13.0, and whenever i trasfer my files to USB, like copy or cut and paste, it will show as if file transfered in an instant,like click paste and poof.the whole 1 gig file transferred in one second, and it wont show dialog box of transfer process, and then i have to predict some minutes and wait (till the transfer actually finishes, i have to usually see my USB's transfer indicator light), if i plug out before or my prediction goes wrong, i end up with corrupted files. This aint related to window manager, as same is case for KDE and XFCE tried thunar, konqueror, midnight commander, all of em resulted with same problem.

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings
If I want to add Windows & Mac users as Samba users, must I first add them all as Ubuntu users? If so, since none of the other users will actually be working on the Ubuntu Server, how do I disable the other non-admin users on the Ubuntu Server login screen. I am using Webmin to administer some server settings, and command line for others.

The ten machines will have /home/student01..10 and /home/linsig01..10 as users. We want /home/student01 to be able to explore and sudo so they can learn to administer their personal machines at home. We don't want them to be able to modify (sudo) /home/linsig01. I've seen the tutorial on Access Control Lists but I'd like other input so we get it right the first time.
