it's probably very silly, but for some reason I can't change Language settings in Ubuntu. I select English and click use for the whole system, then restart, but nothing changes. What else should I do?
View 1 RepliesSince install ubuntu 11.04 natty narwal (unity) i have had issues when leaving my computer for about 10-15 sometimes longer and returning to a frozen screensaver and ubuntu doesn't repond.Lately i have just enabled the screensaver to go on after 5 hours but this is bad for my screen.I am wondering if there is a fix for this i have updated today and still encountering the issue. And is this bug reported?

I was installing ubuntu 11.04 natty narwal daily build alongside windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10, and was resizing partition when computer was taking too long to resize, i then restarted computer, my computer appears to be working, but i get no display on my monitor, even though it is powered on. getting my bios to appear, or restoring my computer to normal.

It works on my netbook. I run on both machines Slackware 13.1. The only difference I can think of is that KDE was pre-installed on my netbook and I just upgraded it. On my main machine I installed all packages except the packages of kde and kdei.
How do I change the power settings in Natty? Such as when the monitor shuts off?

PS- During install, it took 20 minutes to download the language packs, and it said I would be there close to forever for the update downloads.

I've tried reinstalling gnome-control-center and all related pkgs, so it's a configuration problem of some sort. View 1 Replies View RelatedI was going to pull the trigger and do the "natty" upgrade. Before I do I had a few questions. Basically, I changed a few config settings on my ubuntu 10.10 load. I made it so I can connect to it remotely via ssh and open a secure desktop session. I changed some port settings so it doesn't use the traditional ssh 22 port and traditional xrdp port was change also. So, I'm wondering if my "tweaks" will remain intact after the update or if I'll have to go back in and reconfigure those settings? I'm running 10.10 on my PIII 600 with an old ATI Radeon 64 graphics card. I'm quite happy with 10.10 but if I can upgrade to "natty" will little problems I'd like to. Also, my default GUI is xfce. Even after restart the system my network only works when I use dhpc to resolve my IP Address.
I recently upgraded my clean install Ubuntu Studio 10.10 64bit to Natty 11.04 and whilst everything is working well (except for having no plymouth boot splash - but I'm looking into this) I have noticed that when I log in to the "Ubuntu" desktop (with the Unity launcher and Menu bar in the top panel) I can't seem to change how the time and date is displayed. It seems to be stuck showing 24 hour time only with no date no matter which setting I select in the 'Clock' tab of 'Time & Date Settings' menu.
The clock applet works perfectly when I log into the 'Ubuntu Classic' desktop and I am able to display the date and weather ok.
I have a laptop which I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 64bit to 11.04 as well and it doesn't have the same issue.
I thought it might have been a rouge Gconf setting so I dumped my entire gconf using

then restarted into recovery and removed my ~/.gconf folder entirely, rebooted again and logged back on. Apart from losing some settings like Evolution and Networking, which I reloaded, and my theme going back to the default theme, the problem still exists.
I've just completed my upgrade to Natty Narwal and everything seems fine. I am able to open most if not all applications, all except Firefox. I've tried opening it and the egg timer/wheel spins and then returns to arrow without actually opening firefox. Ive been into the software manager and unintalled and reinstalled Firefox but it doesnt make any difference.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have some music in another language, but when I open the songs in Banshee, their song names just come up as weird characters (like μ).I went to [System --> Administration --> Language Support] and installed support for that language, but the songs still come up like μ. (But in Nautilus, their proper names show).
I know the solution is to change my whole system language to that language, but I don't want to do that, as I am not very fluent in it. Is there any way to enable support for that language while keeping English as the language used to display my desktop?
One computer .... three users .... three languages. How do you make that happen? User A speaks English and is happy with English. No problem. User B needs to use Chinese and would like the full system in Chinese. User C needs to use Thai and Chinese. They would prefer their menus to be in Thai and can use iBus for Chinese entry. How do you set up the system so that each user can select their system language when they login?

While installing Ubuntu 10.10 I chose the wrong language for my keyboard. I tried to fix this in keyboard preferences and it seemed to work. The correct one I need is USA (and don't know exactly the difference between USA and USA alternative international). But every time I boot my laptop I get the old language back (Dutch) while USA is above the others in my preferences.

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings

I am using gpointing-device-settings as a program to get the scroll bar on my touch pad working. unfortunately, I can't get the settings to stick after i shutdown and turn on. I have to go into the program and unclick then reclick the button. i'm using version 1.3.2 (ive tried both deb and source versions). does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? and if there is any configure files that I could configure instead of having to use the gui program.

When creating their account, I have turned off the 'Connect to ethernet and wireless' option of the Advanced Settings.
However, when I log into their accounts, they still have full access to the internet through both the wireless and ethernet connections. Is this option for some other purpose?
