I'm interested in changing the console text color. I can change the console color easily in X, but I'd also like to change the color of the text when my computer first boots up (like right after LILO).Is this something I can modify without rebuilding the kernel? If not, does anyone know where in the source I could make a change like this?

I'm using the shiki colors theme from the repos right now. "Shiki-Noble" to be specific. When typing something into Firefox's URL bar the internet addresses have got a dark font color and are hard to read on the dark background. Here's a screenshot: FF.jpg
I've had similar issues with other themes and Firefox's URL bar before.

I really don't know what to call it, but I want to change the color of text that appears before you type in whatever your input is.
For example:
Code:
negrabee@david-desktop:~$ ls /home/david/
I would want "negrabee@david-desktop:~$" to be in a different color. When you have whole bunch of commands and text in a full screen terminal, it gets really annoying to have to look for where you're entering the command so changing the color.

Despite being warned from a friend of mine who works for Intel that the new version of Ubuntu 11.04 sucked? I upgraded from 10.10 which worked perfectly fine and did everything that I wanted it to except work with my COBY MP3 player which is what I hoped 11.04 would do. It all worked great until I rebooted. I previously had the main screen on the left where all of the menus are and the right screen was the 2nd monitor.
Once it rebooted it let me login and loaded the desktop but the main screen is now on the right with that stupid application bar going up the side, all of my folders, etc. are all there but NOTHING is clickable, even the icons up in the right corner where you logout, etc. will not do anything other than highlight that you have clicked on them, the hard drive light flickers for a few moments then nothing.
Also the left hand screen is completely blank unless I move the mouse cursor through it. If I just leave the computer sitting there eventually the screens go dark and the monitor lights start flashing like it is supposed to but if I wiggle the mouse the screens come back on and the mouse is there but there is no login prompt to let me log back in. Pardon my French but this OS is a piece of <bleep> and sucks just like I was told.

I'm trying to change the font color of the text of the bootloader in Grub2. I'm running 9.10. I successfully edited the Grub cfg file change the colors of the Grub menu, but I'd like to change the text color as I watch the modules load and can't seem to do it. I'd also like to password protect the bootloader if possible. I installed startupmanager but the new version won't allow these changes. I like to see my modules as they load and wanted to change the color from white to blue.

I have a ASUS K52J.I tried cheese.It was initially upside down. Then I tried Video for linux device preferences.When I checked vertival flip, that fixed cheese. But it was still upside down in skype.I tried downloading skype from the webpage, and from synaptic.I tried running skype in sudo.I tried: export LIBV4LCONTROL_FLAGS=3 && L
D_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype but i get: ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored
and I tried: export LIBV4LCONTROL_FLAGS=3 && LD_PRELOAD=/usr/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/libv4l/v4l1compat.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.I tried this:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
When skype loads up, i go to the options>video>test. The green light comes on by the built in webcam, then i get a segmentation fault and skype crashes: /usr/local/bin/skype: line 2:4055 Segmentation fault LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype
Then I tried:LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so then running skype and i got the segmentation fault again.I may have missed some threads on this but everyone else seemed to be thanking someone for fixing their problem by now.Finally I tried threating my computer with a Windows installation. But I think both me and the computer knew it was a hollow threat,

I'm having a problem with vim and xterm. When I open a file and press any key, the colour scheme changes slightly. This doesn't happen if I run a 256-colour xterm (export TERM='xterm-256color') but if TERM is set to 'xterm' (the default) I see the colour change. Setting TERM='xterm-256color' in my ~/.bashrc is a "solution", but I'd rather not have to do that since it's never been necessary in the past (e.g., on 13.1) and I don't use any 256-color schemes for vim (usually just the default or possibly "delek"). It doesn't happen with rxvt or with Xfce's terminal. I've tried compiling some other versions of xterm but they either exhibit the same behaviour or don't build. I have tried running without any ~/.vimrc file just to be sure it wasn't one of my settings and I've also tried the sample file at /usr/share/vim/vimrc; the effect is the same.

After an upgrade to OpenSuse 11.3 KDE has gone to worse. I am beginning to believe that dark themes are impossible to use on the new KDE 4.4.4. The only theme that works properly is Air, but I find it to much white. Aya or Elegance theme have problems showing the buttons on plasma elements, so has any other theme but Air. Trying to switch to an additional dark color theme (Obsidian Coast) does not work properly either.
The buttons on plasma elements are invisible (the button panel that appears when the mouse is over an plasma element). Sometimes different elements are distorted, i.e. icons, text input boxes etc. I wonder how it is possible that the developers at KDE can make it worse. This worked perfectly on OpenSuse 11.2 and its KDE version.

Start xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.
The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.
On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.

Its just a small HP webcam (prob 1.3 MP), but pics should be better than they are. Max resolution is 352x288, pics are very dark, and barely has color.

I have tried several different versions of Fedora (64bit and 32bit) and have tried to burn it to a CD and/or DVD (For the larger version) and copying it to a usb pen with universal linux usb, liveUSB creator (from Fedora) and last one i don't remember the name on.

I enjoy using vim from lxterminal with the black background, as well as awesome with its dark theme. I configured xfe manually to be darkish, and i use darklooks as a GTK theme to suit it as well. I could say all my desktop looks pretty dark, which my eyes thank me for. I also use redshift.But problems come along when surfing the web. Most web pages (including this one) have very bright styles. They are not the problem themselves, but switching from my windows hurts my eyes since it's a quick change to a much brighter screen.What would you do, either:
1. Use everything with a brighter background and putting the screen brightness a bit lower. (changing the GTK theme to clearlooks, using lxterminal with a white background, etc.)
2. Use some color theme with uzbl so that pages would look much darker. (like when you set manually the text and background colors in Firefox/Iceweasel)
I would myself go with the second one if most pages wouldn't look that bad when modified that way. For example, many pages use non-transparent images with white backgrounds on white pages, so if you change the background to black not only it looks horrible but it too is a mess.

So when I upgraded to Slack64 13.1 on my asus MB homebrewed desktop and Slack 13.1 on my compaq presario a900 laptop, I started having issues with the xterm title (in Terminal--not Konsole) being too dynamic. By "too dynamic" I mean that I can't actually change the title. The dynamic title (from my .bashrc) is basically just pwd. Whenever I try to set the title (via terminal->set title (menu)), I changes it for a split second, and then reverts back to the dynamic title.
This is merely a petty annoyance, so to get around it, I added an xtitle function that I grabed somewhere online (just echos "33]0;$*07"). So for nano-ing some file, I'd type:xtitle some_file.txt; nano some_file.txt
That works just fine (kind of annoying to type though). running xtitle alone won't actually change the name either though (I'm pretty sure it's the same command as what terminal does anyway). That is, running: xtitle some_file.txt
changes the title for a split second, and the reverts back to my old pwd.What I really want is to have it dynamically name it "some_file.txt" whenever I use nano, but that appears to be a functionality of zsh (with the preexec() fxn).I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if you have a fix for it.

I use ubuntu on about 3 machines, have installed it many times, and run it virtually with software and been using Ubuntu and many other distros for about 8 months now. I am still pretty much a noob and when it comes to CLI I have no clue and need it all spelled out for me. So I'll cut to the problem. My problem is that about every 10-15 minutes my netbook (Samsung N130 1.6ghz atom 2GB 800mhz RAM 160GB HDD and 128mb GMA GPU). All of my other ubuntu or any other linux distro for that matter do not have this problem I am about to explain.
So it gives me a false signal that the HDD is in use. Like an example... I'll be browsing a web page and all of a sudden it stops... I'm not running anything else or downloading anything internet is there and just stops. I can move the mouse and when I hover over objects it highlights but a click is unresponsive. And I have noticed everytime it does this it lasts about 20 seconds and the HDD indicator light stays a solid color but when I listen the HDD is it's normal sound (no ripping of data or anything).

Is there a simple text editor for Linux that will let you color or highlight text on demand? Something like gedit or leafpad with color? I know I can probably do this with vi or emacs, but I'm looking for something simple, need not be feature rich.

I just installed Slackware 13.1 on my Acer a0531h. My first problem is the size of letters on pure console. It's too small. I tried tweaking lilo but even using 'normal' doesn't change the size of letters. I haven't changed the default font (I think it's called default8x16). The text looks pretty sharp though, so I'm wondering whether this is its native resolution. The text during installation was huge, and quite blurry. I just want to have a text size I can easily read and if possible be sharp. I know I can start X and have whatever font family and size I want, but somehow I feel better using pure console. Just in case it matters, I want to say that eventually I want to have UTF8 support on the command line (so that I can read and write Greek).
