I'm using the shiki colors theme from the repos right now. "Shiki-Noble" to be specific. When typing something into Firefox's URL bar the internet addresses have got a dark font color and are hard to read on the dark background. Here's a screenshot: FF.jpg

I've had similar issues with other themes and Firefox's URL bar before.

Ubuntu Installation :: Openoffice Menu Text Corrupted Plus Freezes

Jun 9, 2010

I have recently done a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04. Since then I have had no end of trouble with Openoffice 3.2.

When I open any office app, the text on the menus is corrupted and has lines going through it. I've included some screenshot to show what I mean.

Also, sometimes when I open an Excel spreadsheet my entire system crawls to a standstill and it can take anything up to 10 minutes for it to respond again. Not even the mouse cursor will move. If I reboot the PC and open the same document it will sometimes be just fine. It is very random.

So far I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling openoffice.org from apt-get, but this hasn't fixed the problem.

My system:
OS: Ubuntu 10.04
CPU: Core 2 Duo
GPU: nForce 610i/nVidia 7050 (onboard VGA)
RAM: 2GB

Fedora Installation :: No Menu - No Panel - Just Plain Background After Install

Aug 8, 2010

I've installed Fedora 13 from DVD and selected some extra features (php, mySQL). After the installation and user creation, I rebooted and logged in - clean clean desktop. No menu, no panel nothing. But I can run some commands (like firefox) from ALT+F2. It looks as if the commands works fine, but no menu.

I've re-installed my whole system.... same thing after logging in. I can see the bottom panel before log in.

Whatever I should do, I can only through command line as I'm able (from ALT+F2) to open a terminal. I suspect my resolution or something.

I'm working from a Acer laptop who's monitor is broken, connected a Samsung SyncMaster 943nwx to it. Its a 17" wide monitor.

Fedora Installation :: FC12 New Install / Top Menu Panel Missing Items

Mar 7, 2010

First off, I have spent several hours searching this and other forums looking for an answer to this, and have tried several things, none of which have fixed this issue. Here is what I'm seeing:I performed a new install of FC12 on a Thinkpad R40, 512Mb RAM, with a 40Gb HDD, 38Gb useable, from a live CD. That leaves a little over 9Gb free for expansion. All went well with the install, but the post-boot upgrade would not complete due to an error with the abrt files. I found a thread discussing this and used the suggested method of performing the updates from a shell, which worked fine. There were LOTS of installations, updates, and replacements, and finally the shell returned "Complete!". After a reboot I was going through the Fedora_12_ User_ Guide.pdf and noticed many items missing from the System Menu as described in section 3.1.1.3 "The System menu". Another thread seemed to address a similar issue with su - then yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment", which I did. It updated over 870 items, then completed with no errors. At this point I logged out and back in, no change, and then tried a reboot, which also did not change anything. Finally, I'm appealing to the community.

Ubuntu Installation :: Screen Goes Dark After Reboot

Jun 23, 2011

I'm trying to install ubuntu alongside Windows 7 on a HP Pavilion DV3. When I reboot I'm given the option to either boot into windows or ubuntu (this is after running the wubi program from the ubuntu website); when I select ubuntu it says that the installation will continue but the screen then goes very dark like the brightness has been turned right down. In the center of the screen I can faintly see the word ubuntu. I've tried using the hot-keys on the laptop to turn the brightness up but this doesn't work. I've also tried installing from CD but his doesn't work either and I get the same problem. This is my first time installing ubuntu so I'm not familiar with how the installation process works. Also if any other details are needed I'll be happy to give them.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - Screen Goes Blank Dark With Flashing Cursor At Top

Aug 7, 2010

I have a desktop with AMD Sempron 3000+, 1.2GB RAM, VIA S3G Unichrome Pro IGP, VIA SATA RAID controller based disks, PS/2 mouse and keyboard running Windows XP. Wanted to move to years ago favourite (linux based systems), I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 for i386 and am trying to install both using CD as well as USB. After the Ubuntu start-up menu for installation, I select install Ubuntu option, turn off 'quiet' so that I can see what happens. The screen goes blank dark with a flashing cursor at the top.

In the kernel messages, the see that it has detected the processor, set the clock, assigned the PS/2 keyboard to input3 and then says:
[1.911624] isapnp: no plug and play device found
After this, the system hangs. Keyboard doesn't work.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Upgrade - Screen Goes Dark / Monitor Light Flashing?

May 4, 2011

Despite being warned from a friend of mine who works for Intel that the new version of Ubuntu 11.04 sucked? I upgraded from 10.10 which worked perfectly fine and did everything that I wanted it to except work with my COBY MP3 player which is what I hoped 11.04 would do. It all worked great until I rebooted. I previously had the main screen on the left where all of the menus are and the right screen was the 2nd monitor.

Once it rebooted it let me login and loaded the desktop but the main screen is now on the right with that stupid application bar going up the side, all of my folders, etc. are all there but NOTHING is clickable, even the icons up in the right corner where you logout, etc. will not do anything other than highlight that you have clicked on them, the hard drive light flickers for a few moments then nothing.

Also the left hand screen is completely blank unless I move the mouse cursor through it. If I just leave the computer sitting there eventually the screens go dark and the monitor lights start flashing like it is supposed to but if I wiggle the mouse the screens come back on and the mouse is there but there is no login prompt to let me log back in. Pardon my French but this OS is a piece of <bleep> and sucks just like I was told.

I'm installing Linux Mint on my old machine now and it's installing good, but I try to install Fedora 10 and I've been having problems. It works fine in VMware, but when I try to load it from a live CD to install into the drive, on the initizialize process it say's "failed ata something something", then it goes to a bar and then it goes to a black screen and it hangs there. I did 5 md5check sums on the same iso, I'm not sure what's going on?

Ubuntu :: Changing Gnome-panel Text Color?

Mar 22, 2011

I have a theme that looks like this.

Unfortunately, it makes the globalmenu and clock applets disappear on my gnome-panel. My panel is set to system theme, though when I choose a solid color I can get the hidden text to show up. I want to preserve the system color so I need to change the text color somehow. Also, I don't know why it uses that bluish color when clicked on since I never defined such a color in the appearance settings.

Debian Installation :: Radeon HD 4670 - Display Completely Dark In X

May 22, 2011

I want to get Debian stable working on an iMac 11,2 (previous model):

1/ Same problem as this one, but I solved it by installing the fglrx-driver
2/ New problem: magic mouse and wireless keyboard don't work - solution: install .38-kernel from backports
3/ New problem: fglrx for .38 requires linux-headers.38 requires linux-kbuild.38...

So again stuck with the vesa-driver. I'm quite happy with the wireless mouse and keyboard working, so I'd rather stay with linux-image.38.

Two possibilities:
1/ I get the radeon-driver working
2/ I get the fglrx-driver working

I'd prefer the first method, but as you can see in the log (infra), there's a version mismatch between the kernel and the radeon-module. Any ideas how to get around this?

Using the radeon-driver gives me the following EE's in xorg.0.log.old:
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch.
(EE) RADEON(0): Acceleration initialization failed
(EE) RADEON(0): clock recovery failed
(EE) RADEON(0): channel eq failed
(EE) GLX error: Can not get required symbols.

The las error is also shown as the only error when I use the VESA-driver; so clearly that is not the problem. I have tried without an xorg.conf, and the following xorg.conf won't work either:
Section "Module"
Load "glx"
Load "dri"
EndSection .....
I also tried the radeonhd-driver, but that doesn't change anything.

Ubuntu :: Proprietary ATI Driver No Text In Panel, Openoffice Freeze?

Dec 28, 2010

I've just upgraded to Maverick Meerkat on a new Dell system and everything was working just peachy until today. I've spent the last couple days tweaking my ubuntu so something I did made it so that open office only allows me to click inside it and write text some of the time, and very slowly. And then my panel doesn't show the text of the main menu headers. If i click on them though, the menu shows up with text inside it totally in tact.

The problem disappears when I disable the additional driver (preferences-additional drivers-remove). And recurs when I activate it. So, suspect its a conflict with xorg and the proprietary driver. I'm running emerald with window decorations (theme is neon glow) - changing the emerald theme doesn't affect the problem. Im also running compiz-fusion.

Ubuntu :: Menu Not Visible On Panel?

May 20, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04 I removed the Me Menu from the panel and then put it back (right click -> Add to Panel -> Indicator Applet Session). The Me Menu came back, but my name is not on the panel. When the Me Menu came back it was just a small blank on the panel next to the Power Button. There was no name, no icon, no nothing to tell me that was the Me Menu. In fact, I only accidentally found it when I happened to click in that blank space. I checked to see if there was any sort of Preferences setting for the Me Menu so I could get it to display my name for me to click on (like it did before), but could not see a setting like that. How can I make the Me Menu to be more visible than just a blank spot on the panel?

Ubuntu :: Infinite Bookmarks On Menu Panel?

Aug 2, 2010

Last week I dropped my keyboard, came back about an hour later, and without realizing the keyboard was on the ground hitting a random button I went to add a bookmark to my menu panel(I think that's what it's called). An unknown amount of the selected bookmark then posted to my menu panel and now i am not even able to select my Applications, Places, or System options without the bookmarked task opening. Is there anyway of clearing out that entire menu panel and having a fresh start?

EDIT: All I did was delete the .gtk-bookmarks file and restart the computer. There were still alot of theme on the panel but i was able to delete them and everything returned to normal.
