Is there a simple text editor for Linux that will let you color or highlight text on demand? Something like gedit or leafpad with color? I know I can probably do this with vi or emacs, but I'm looking for something simple, need not be feature rich.

pkg-config-0.23
glib-2.20.4
pango-1.24.4
jpeg library
tiff library
cairo
And I was about to install the last dependency: ATK (Accessability Toolkit).I opened the Archive Manager to extract the "atk-1.26.0.tar.gz" file (yes, I'm still switching from Windows so I'm fond of GUI), but I noticed all the text in that window was boxes, like the □ type box for every letter of text.So instead I thought it wouldn't be a big deal, because the terminal and regular windows weren't screwed up.I opened a text file in gedit (reference to commands in terminal, such as how to extract files via terminal), but yet again all of the text was □-like boxes.
I want to know some PDF program for Ubuntu 10.10 so that I can highlight text with different colors as I read it and so that I can save it as intact as highlighted so that I will not have to rehighlight the same thing again and again when I open it. I have tried may softwares including the foxit pdf reader that has got the highlighting the text in windows version which is of course free of cost. But I didn't find it in the Ubuntu based Foxit reader version.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOn windows I really only used Notepad++ as my text editor, it had two features that I loved.What I need to accomplish is what I would do with Notepad++ column editor.I could have like 100 lines, and place the cursor at a column, and goto edit>column editor, and I could insert an incrementing number. (I could also pad the incrementing number with 0s, this was GREAT for making batch files among other things.)So each line at that column had a number higher than the previous line.The other feature that I used sometimes was a search/replace with regex patterns.Does anyone know of an editor that has those features for linux? I am mostly after the column editor insert feature but if you know of one with both features that would rock.

After using "Find and Replace" to search for and select text, the default pale blue used since 3.1 does not stand out clearly against a white background. This is particularly problematic for short search strings and for search targets found in the Table of Contents (blue text on grey background).
According to Robert Tucker in the OOo Forum thread "On Gnome on Fedora the background of selected text can definitely be changed at System>Preferences>Appearance, Theme Tab, Customize button, Selected items button". I cannot find any equivalent in Xfce; can it be done?

I am wondering if it is possible to get a text editor (or modifying an existing one) that doesn't take the entire terminal. The reason for this is that I to look at the output of a different command, then modify a different file while looking at the output. I want to be able to do this very fast, and it would be great if there was some way I could this all in one shell instead of creating two terminals and resizing or flipping between them. I realize the ideal solution would be a second monitor, but I can't get that right now.

I was just wondering if there was some way to edit the underlying searchable data, so that I may be able to give keywords to pdf pages (i.e. I have a page of notes that is dealing with energy conservation, so I could under the image data write "energyconservation, problem 2.3") and jump to that page.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to Maverick this afternoon, and have run into one very small, but very annoying problem.
Since upgrading, the text color for the Firefox menu is black. This makes it unreadable/invisible using probably the majority of personas. I have been able to find no way of changing this color. This was not an issue in Lucid.
There have been other threads on this subject, some of which suggest editing a userChrome.css file. I have edited that file, but upon restarting Firefox, the changes I have made revert back to what they had been before I made my edits.
I have also fiddled around with trying to change all manner of GTK settings, but still nothing has had any influence. I logged into a Gnome session, as well, but was still unable to remedy this.
I downloaded an .emerald + GDK theme off gnome-look.org and absolutely love it so far. The only thing I do not like about it is the fact that it changes the background color of all webpage text boxes to black, which sorta ruins a lot of sites. where I can modify just that little bit? the webpage text box color? I'd like to keep the theme and just set the text boxes back to normal. Using Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition.

I have tried geany which chokes VERY badly when trying to compile multiple files. I have tried kate which doesn't have a compiler.
Ubuntu 11.04.Dragging the Text Editor launcher into the Unity dock will create a blank space with a blank label which launches Text Editor. How can I choose an icon for it?Also, how can I make it so middle clicking on the icon (or other ways of opening multiple instances) will open more instances of Text Editor instead of doing exactly nothing (does nothing if Text Editor is already open, otherwise it opens "Untitled Document 1")?it doesn't "launch text editor" per se. instead it opens "Untitled Document 1". maybe this is why you can't middle click it to open multiple instances?

I would want "negrabee@david-desktop:~$" to be in a different color. When you have whole bunch of commands and text in a full screen terminal, it gets really annoying to have to look for where you're entering the command so changing the color.
I have a theme that looks like this.
Unfortunately, it makes the globalmenu and clock applets disappear on my gnome-panel. My panel is set to system theme, though when I choose a solid color I can get the hidden text to show up. I want to preserve the system color so I need to change the text color somehow. Also, I don't know why it uses that bluish color when clicked on since I never defined such a color in the appearance settings.
I was experimenting with distros the other day, and came came across Slitaz. Anyway, I noticed it had a really nice and lightweight text editor called Beaver. It had basic functions like syntax highlighting, and seemed to run on the lightest bit of ram.I wanted to install it for Debian. Anyway, I can't seem to find a .deb package for this application, nor apt-get install it. How would I go about getting this editor?
