Slackware :: Full Install After The Fact?

Nov 14, 2010

I installed Slackware quite awhile ago now, and am starting to wish that I'd done a full install instead of cherry-picking my packages. Is there any way I can do it retroactively... you know, just add all the stuff I didn't install? I'm running -current.

General :: Install Grub After The Fact?

Dec 30, 2010

I installed Vector linux on my multi-boot system and didn't install grub because I didn't see a way to not mess with the MBR. I already have grub legacy installed to MBR and just wanted to add to the menu.lst. Now, can I install grub to the root partition where I installed Vector or should I just re-install and let it write to mbr and redo mbr later?

OpenSUSE Install :: Would Like To Confirm That Problem Is -- In Fact -- A Bug?

Sep 4, 2010

So here's the deal: I'm "supporting" this older lady who's using an i386-type Compaq (Pentium III -- Coppermine) with 384MB of RAM. She says that the machine is being slow, and I decide that she needs a leaner OS than what she has (which is Ubuntu 09.10). OK, so I do some research and conclude that openSUSE is the best OS for both the machine and for the older lady. I use Bittorrent to download 11.3 and check the md5 checksum. In my own room I install on a machine that is identical to hers 11.3 and everything checks out (I ultimately conclude that GNOME is large for the machine and spend a number of days trying to swap it out with XFCE, but that's another story.). So I figure that everything's great and I use the same (GNOME) live disk to install 11.3 on her machine. As soon as GNOME fully boots up it crashes. I reinstall and it crashes again. I swap out hard drives (remember, these are identical machines that I'm "supporting", here) and as soon as GNOME is fully loaded 11.3 then promptly crashes. Finally, I swap out her entire MACHINE with the identical one that I've been working on in my room. The f---er crashes when GNOME is fully loaded! By now, I'm fully pissed (because by this time my regular machine has ALSO gone down (possibly because of openSUSE, but I cannot say definitively so at this time).

Slackware :: RPM Requires Full SeaMonkey Package Install

Slackware :: Slack Full Install - Joomla Says No Mysql Support

Jan 29, 2010

I made a full install of Slackware and have been using one of my boxes as an Apache web server. I recently tried to install Joomla, the PHP CMS software, and when I ran the pre-install requisite checker (The second step of the installation), the installer notified me that I do not have MySQL support. I find this especially strange as I've made webpages using PHP that made use of MySQL databases.

My pre-post research has lead me to several other people with the same problem. Half were using windows, and just had not uncommented the "extension mysql.so" line in the php.ini file. The other half solved their problem by installing their distro's php-mysql module. According to what I'd read, you can still use MySQL if you don't have that module installed, but Joomla does need it to be able to use the MySQL database.

I've searched long and hard for this plugin/add-on/module for Slackware, but to no avail. It's available in RPM format, and I know that it's possible to use rpm2tgz to convert these files, but I don't know exactly what the issue is, and if Slackware may be different. I don't want to install that and then find out that it overwrote something that I'd needed.

Server :: Debug Out-of-memory Error After The Fact?

Jun 22, 2010

Last night a RHEL server in our cluster unexpectedly ran out of memory and became unable to perform its purpose. I say unexpectedly, because it had been purring away for ~385 days of uptime without a twitch. It has 16GB of memory, of which on average 2GB are in use. I see no unusual traffic in e.g. HTTPD log files. how to approach tracking down why this might have happened, with a view to preventing a reoccurrence.

Ubuntu :: Aligning A Wd20ears Hard Drive After The Fact?

Nov 13, 2010

After getting my components, building my computer, installing ubuntu and beginning to configure things I found out about the issues with aligning Western Digital's wd20ears 2TB hard drive. So I'm wondering what my options are. It's Maverick I've installed and when I go to the 'administration > disk utility' it reports a 1MB partition at the front, then 2TB partition for Ubuntu, then 25GB swap. Can/should I be worrying about this now? Am I too late to do anything except start over (remove old partitions and create new ones beginning in the right sector?) I read in this thread (this thread here) a post that made me hope perhaps I'm worrying about a non-issue but I don't know enough to diagnose things (or fix) myself...

Slackware :: 13.0 With Full Multimedia Capabilities?

Feb 12, 2010

i am in the process of setting up my wonderful slackware system on my laptop, and now i would like to make sure i am able to run as much multimedia as possible (to be up to snuff in this realm with mac and windows users). i am running slackware x86_64 version 13.0 with a full install (but only with the software sets a, ap, d, f, k, kde, l, n, x, xap, y) and have installed flash-player-plugin from slackbuilds.org.

recently i stumbled upon this website: [url] it explains precisely what i would like to know: which packages should i install to get a fully-featured multimedia slackware install (and in which order should i build/install these packages to take care of dependencies). i emailed the author to make sure this guide was up to date with slackware 13, but, sadly, it is not. it seems that mr. anderson uses slackware 12.2, and thus there may be inconsistencies between what this guide explains and what works on the newest slackware. for example, mplayerplug-in has been depreciated in favor of gecko-mediaplayer. i need to know if more of this has happened. i would simply test it myself, but i have been distro-hopping reinstalling repeatedly over the past few weeks for various reasons, and i am trying to avoid dirtying up my system too much and having to reinstall yet again.

so i ask of you, does mr. anderson's list apply to slackware 13.0, or are there any changes that need to be made? i ask because someone here may have already used this guide and may be willing to share their knowledge and experience on it. eric's vlc slackbuild is very interesting, and i plan to run that, so vlc and its dependencies are covered. my multimedia needs are not too demanding, but i do expect web media to work flawlessly. i often visit www.apple.com and watch movie trailers, guided tours, etc., so i need quicktime videos on the web to work. videos and online flash games already work fine with flash-player-plugin. i also visit some web sites that have windows media formats being streamed (.wmv and .wma).

Slackware :: Upgraded To 13.1 - Temporary Directories Full

May 26, 2010

I've upgraded to 13.1 from 13.0 but can't startx. I get this error;
'call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full?)'

When I ctl-alt-backspace there are numerous messages including these two;
'/usr/bin/kde4-config: symbol lookup error:/user/lib/libkdecore.so.5:
undefined symbol: _zn9qlistdatadetach3ev.
and
startkde: error: could not locate lnusertemp in /usr/bin/startkde: line

Linux 13.0 worked OK right out of the "box" so I don't understand why this version has this problem. Was something changed from 13.0 to 13.1?

Slackware :: Full Blown Unrestricted MPlayer With Bells And Whistles?

Jun 22, 2011

I'm currently viewing all my video and DVD stuff on two different desktops (CentOS and Kubuntu), each with a combination of MPlayer and VLC. Now I'm considering doing everything only with an "MPlayer-on-steroids" build for Slackware 13.37. Basically, I like the one-app-per-task approach. But first things first.

1) I'm basically using this script here as a starting point for my build: [URL]
What libs (from slackbuilds.org) would be reasonable to include before the build to support playback of the most common - and the odd exotic - video formats? The thing with MPlayer is that ./configure --help spits out a gazillion of options

2) Until now I've only used the no-GUI version of MPlayer, since the default interface seems to me almost unusable. Now I understand there are several new frontends available for MPlayer. Is there one that works OK for DVD playback, e. g. enables you to select chapters, languages and subtitles without having to jump through burning loops?

Slackware :: Printing Full Black Pages And Cups Shows Errors

Jun 24, 2010

I upgraded from 13.0 to 13.1 and now I have strange behaviors with the printer. It is an Epson Stylus Photo RX640. It was working well with the vanilla Gutenprint 5.2.2 that came in Slack 13.0. The printer is shared and used from other slackware boxes and a mac. Upgrade to 13.1 (gutenprint gets to be 5.2.4) ...

Now when I print from the machine that has the printer attached I get full black pages, and cups shows errors. The Mac is still able to print well (probably because it is using its own PPD and passing through directly to the printer). I then removed gutenprint, and then removed the 5.2.2 PPDs (that were still in the system). Reinstalled gutenprint from the Slackware 13.1 distro. And the problem persists.

Ubuntu Installation :: Migrate Wubi 10.04 Install To A Full Install?

Mar 19, 2011

What is the easiest and/or safest way to migrate my Wubi 10.04 install to a full install? Currently, my Dell XPS M1530 is currently dual-booting Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows Vista Home Premium, and I've decided after using Windows a total of around 4 hours over the past 6 months that I can probably let it go. So, I don't need Windows anymore and I believe I'm ready for a full install of Ubuntu. Though, I probably will wait for 11.04 to come out first.

A few ways I've thought of already are: 1) Find an external hard drive to put the Wubi files on. 2) Upload files to an storage website. 3) Temporarily put the Wubi files onto another computer (Windows). All these meaning I would then wipe my harddrive and install Ubuntu from a CD. And by "files", I mean Documents, Pictures, Downloads, etc.

EDIT: deleting all my applications, because OpenOffice.org won't reinstall on my computer due to dependency issues while attempting to install LibreOffice. So a fresh install would be nice.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To FULL Install 11.04 On 4GB USB Drive

I'm trying to perform a FULL install of 11.04 onto a 4GB USB drive, but the Ubuntu installer insists I must have at least 4.4GB free space.I am able to run the ISO LIVE from a 1GB usb drive created with LiLi USB Creator , but the Ubuntu installer demands at least 4.4 GB to install I can give Ubuntu the entire 4GB drive, but how do I get past the Installer's 4.4 GB requirement?I don't need the larger apps like Gimp/Office/Games to free up space. When I completely remove these apps from the persistent live install via Synaptic, I run out of space - Possibly due to cache issues. I'm very new and don't know how to proceed.I am able to FULL-install and boot Fedora successfully as its installer does not have the 4 GB limitation. Is is possible to install Ubuntu 11.04 onto the 4GB drive?

Fedora Installation :: Stuck Half Way Through Install / Get Full?

Apr 17, 2010

I bought a new issue of Linux Format magazine and saw it had a bootable disk with Fedora installer/live DVD on it which I was eager to try out "The worlds most advanced Linux distro" I put the DVD in my computer and rebooted it. I selected 'install or upgrade'. It started to load (blasting white text at me). I skipped the media test but then the screen was black and reacted to no mouse moving or keyboard pressing. Not even the OFF button, so I pressed RESET and selected 'install with basic video driver' this time it worked. It didn't fill my whole screen like many 'basic video drivers' but they don't cut off much so I was willing to forgive Fedora using one it was proberly only for the install anyway I could download a new one after. I have a Radeon HD 4200 (extreamly crap) intergrated into the north bridge. I can't afford an expensive graphics card. I build it myself so I can tell you what parts it's got if needed. Anyway I progressed through the setup without problems until I got to the partitionor which defaulted to 'Replace existing Linux system' this would delete Ubuntu an maybe Windows 7. I changed it to custom layout or something like that. It started a partitioner and I remembered I wanted to give ubuntu 30GB more room so I resized it. I created a new 50 GB logical partition and select it as the '/' partition, plenty more space for future Linux distributions. Here's the real problem. Soon after I hit install it said some repositorys require a network connection. It had only one option 'eth0' my motherboard has built in Ethernet but I connect to the net with a wifi card I do not have a cable long enough to reach this computer on the other side of the room. So how was I suppost to continue the setup? I pressed okay hoping it would give up and let me continue the setup but it didn't it said they was an error connecting to the Internet therefore setup could not continue. With only one option: 'Exit Installer'. GRRRR. Interestingly enough after I clicked it the disk drive's light kept flashing but the screen went black forcing me to reboot. Can anyone help me so I can install "The worlds most advanced Linux distribution"*
