Last night a RHEL server in our cluster unexpectedly ran out of memory and became unable to perform its purpose. I say unexpectedly, because it had been purring away for ~385 days of uptime without a twitch. It has 16GB of memory, of which on average 2GB are in use. I see no unusual traffic in e.g. HTTPD log files. how to approach tracking down why this might have happened, with a view to preventing a reoccurrence.
View 2 RepliesI am having a problem with lockups on a new FC12 box (dual core 3 ghz, 4 gb memory, HDPVR, nvidia 8400gs). This happens reliably when replaying MythTV videos, but also randomly at other times using other apps. Usually but not always this is accompanied by a kernel panic (caps lock + scroll lock lights flash on keyboard).

I know it needs to run more, but given the reliability of this problem with MythTV video playback I am wondering if the problem could be in the video card memory. Any linux (or bootable) tester for video memory? All I am able to find are some things for windoze such as this. Also is there any way to track that address from the core dump back to a physical location?
I have been setting up a vps I got out with bhost.net, with CentOS installed. I've been learning and have set up everying I need with the exception of ftp/sftp.
Using yum I installed vsftpd and ran into problems, thinking it was something I might of done I did a fresh install of CentOS and I still recieve the same problem on a fresh install so it is nothing I have done to the server.
The problem is when connecting via a sftp client I get an out of memory error. This error is listed in the putty faq ( url ) under A.7.5, there is a brief explaintion of the cure under A.7.6.
there is mention of a login script but I don't know where this is located. I'm a novice at Linux but by no means incompotent when it comes to computing.
I am trying to run yum update on my CentOS 5.3 server, 32-bit, but it responds with the following:

While Apache is off, then everything is OK, but if I start apache server after some time I get messages "Unable to fork: Cannot allocate memory" when trying to do some commands with ssh(dir,rm,top and so on).
P.S. There is free RAM when I get that message.

I'm trying to install deluge via ssh and my vps has 512mb ram and is only using 11% of it prior to running the code.
in terminal i typed firefox -g -d gdbthen typed backtracethen i got lots of these different errors:

View 2 Replies View RelatedIve been messing around on a Solaris box, installing precompiled lib/programs from the repos by extracting them and placing them in my home dir. It seems everything ive tried sofar works, except for irssi. I get the following error:

For virtual mem or a particular process, it is around 1.1GB, which is large but for resident memory, it only consumes 300MB. Are there anyone who knows what the differences are? I would also like to know whether the difference (1.1GB - 300MB) = 800MB are actually available for use by other applications in the system.

I have set up my mysql database, and apache and php are all working fine, and when i copy my wordpress folder into my /var/www/, and edit the config file for my database, i point my browser to[URL] to get it up and running. But i only get the error: "Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 7680 bytes) in /var/www/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/plugin.php on line 302". Some googleing seems to suggest that this may be a problem with a php.ini file, but im assuming this is a windows based solution, and im not sure where/what a linux alternative is.

I installed Vector linux on my multi-boot system and didn't install grub because I didn't see a way to not mess with the MBR. I already have grub legacy installed to MBR and just wanted to add to the menu.lst. Now, can I install grub to the root partition where I installed Vector or should I just re-install and let it write to mbr and redo mbr later?

View 15 Replies View RelatedSo here's the deal: I'm "supporting" this older lady who's using an i386-type Compaq (Pentium III -- Coppermine) with 384MB of RAM. She says that the machine is being slow, and I decide that she needs a leaner OS than what she has (which is Ubuntu 09.10). OK, so I do some research and conclude that openSUSE is the best OS for both the machine and for the older lady. I use Bittorrent to download 11.3 and check the md5 checksum. In my own room I install on a machine that is identical to hers 11.3 and everything checks out (I ultimately conclude that GNOME is large for the machine and spend a number of days trying to swap it out with XFCE, but that's another story.). So I figure that everything's great and I use the same (GNOME) live disk to install 11.3 on her machine. As soon as GNOME fully boots up it crashes. I reinstall and it crashes again. I swap out hard drives (remember, these are identical machines that I'm "supporting", here) and as soon as GNOME is fully loaded 11.3 then promptly crashes. Finally, I swap out her entire MACHINE with the identical one that I've been working on in my room. The f---er crashes when GNOME is fully loaded! By now, I'm fully pissed (because by this time my regular machine has ALSO gone down (possibly because of openSUSE, but I cannot say definitively so at this time).

After getting my components, building my computer, installing ubuntu and beginning to configure things I found out about the issues with aligning Western Digital's wd20ears 2TB hard drive. So I'm wondering what my options are. It's Maverick I've installed and when I go to the 'administration > disk utility' it reports a 1MB partition at the front, then 2TB partition for Ubuntu, then 25GB swap. Can/should I be worrying about this now? Am I too late to do anything except start over (remove old partitions and create new ones beginning in the right sector?) I read in this thread (this thread here) a post that made me hope perhaps I'm worrying about a non-issue but I don't know enough to diagnose things (or fix) myself...

I'd like to confirm if my understanding of this data is correct, because Plesk indicates that my memory usage is only 50% or less. (Though I have read a number of reports indicating that Plesk's measurements are frequently wrong.)
Top says: Of the 2,073,156K total memory, 1,982,572K (95.63%) is being used, 90,584K (4.37%) is free. Of that sum, 421,948K (20.35%) are being used as buffers. Additionally, of the 2,096,472K of Swap, 60K is used, and 887,700K (42.34%) is cached.
My questions: Is my memory actually being 95% used? Or is the buffered quantity (20.35%) not a use of physical/virtual memory? (i.e. is it disk usage?) Does the amount of cached Swap influence the percentage of physical/virtual memory being used?
In other words, who is correct? Plesk says I'm using 40-50% of my memory, whereas top says 85-95%.
I have an application running on a dos box and the log files when trying to open sometimes give an out of memory error. It doesnt affect other functionality on the box though. Now I am porting this application to a linux box. What I wanted is how important it is to implement a wrap around for this log. What happens when it exceeds a limit except for trouble viewing that particular file. Another thing I noticed is when i open the file on dos with edit it gives the error whereas with other editors it opens file. Is there some configuration file that maintains this.

I'm looking for a way to put a MySQL database in a server's memory. The disks aren't fast enough to keep up with the usage and I don't feel like going for a splitted web&db server yet because of the costs.
Because this involves risks (unless there's a way to read from the memory and write to the memory AND disks?), so I'd prefer that the DB gets copied automatically every hour or so to the local disks.
