Slackware :: DVDRead Could Not Open The Disc "/dev/hda"
Aug 10, 2010
This is a strange problem that I did not have on Slackware 13.0 with VLC-1.0.2, but has shown up with 13.1 and VLC 1.1.1. (All of the VLC packages I'm talking about come from Alien BOB!)
First problem, when I try to play a DVD by going to File -> Open Disk -> DVD -> Play, I get this error:
Code:
Playback failure: DVDRead could not open the disc "/dev/hda". Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/hda'. Check the log for details. Which makes sense because of the LibATA switch-over. Right? The DVD shouldn't be /dev/hda anymore.
(There is no log, BTW, I hadn't set one up in the preferences).
I can still choose to open a directory and simply click on the DVD in the open directory dialog box (/media/<DVD name>). Then everything plays without a problem.
Ubuntu wont recognize my disc drive. I installed Ubuntu with Wubi, so I have dual boot. I have the latest Ubuntu. On Windows 7, my disc drive works fine. On Ubuntu, however, the tray wont open. I also tried going to terminal and typed "eject" and "sudo eject" and I receive this message:eject: unable to find or open device for: `cdrom'I'm not sure if it has anything to do with it, but when Ubuntu OS starts up, it takes a while and says "ata3 soft reset failed" or something like that. I had to set the delay to last longer so it could start up
Sometimes, I am unable to open the CD drawer whether there's a disc in it or not. I have a Dell laptop which gives me approx 4 methods to open the drawer:
1. Press the eject button on the drawer, 2. Type 'eject' from a command line, 3. Press 'fn + f10' on the keyboard,
I haven't used Fedora or anything except Windows in my entire life. I decided I would wipe my windows machine and try out Fedora 14.
I did a fresh install, rebooted the computer, and inserted a disc containing the following software: Medialink Wireless-N USB 2.0 adapter Model MWN-USB150N. It a wireless USB adapter so that I can connect to the Internet.
I can't get a single file on the disc to open. The disc is fine because it opens on Windows just fine. When I try to load it here I either get: Unexpected Error: Error reading from file. or An error occurred while loading the archive or There is no application installed to run executable files. I can't do any updates I guess until I get connected to the Internet.
I have installed it (11.3) with KDE desktop.I have a problem with openening a device (harddisc) directly from sysinfo:/It is a ext4 partition, but also with my others (ntfs), this error occurs...
Running Maverick on my desktop. Had a strange happening sometime last night. I generally leave the computer on all the time. When I got up this morning, I saw that my computer had rebooted and it said that it wanted to check for disc errors and that there was a problem with /home It checked until about 70%, at which point it stopped advancing for a half hour, so I did a hard reboot and choose "I"gnore when I got the message again.
The computer booted fine. The disc manager gui seemed to think my hard drive is fine, but I didn't do the full, slow check. My hard drive is about a month old. When I opened "open office" there as a document to recover, indicating that the thing did in fact crash sometime last night. The next odd thing- my "Opera" web browser doesn't open the browser. The command it is calling up is "/usr/bin/opera %U" Doesn't do anything, nothing shows up as running in the status monitor. Rebooting doesn't change anything with opera, and I still get the request to do a disc scan and to try to fix errors.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of opera. I uninstalled that and installed an earlier version of opera. Then, I reinstalled the latest version of opera. In terminal, typing "opera" gives me the message: Could not initialize Opera. Typing "sudo opera" opens Opera. Using the icon to open opera still points to the same place, and still doesn't work. So, here are my questions:
1- How do I get a logfile of the crash that happened last night? 2- How do I figure out if there is a problem with the /home folder or a problem otherwise with my hard disc? How do I fix that? 3- Where would I point the "opera" icon so it opens normally? 4- Is there any way to recover the information that I previously had in Opera, such as passwords? I used "my opera" to recover my latest bookmarks, but that doesn't save passwords. I'm thinking maybe those files are still around, even though I uninstalled and reinstalled opera.
Right now I have a windows xp on my computer. I have only C: drive. I want to first format to c:, and then make a partition, and then install windows xp, and then install slackware 12.2. How can I format, and then make partitions of my 80gb disc space?
I have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.
I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.
sda1 - swap sda2 - / sda3 - /home
There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?
this blew my mind today, because i've been using ubuntu for 2 and half years. Brasero 2.28.2 in Karmic does not have an option enable multisessions when burning disc or import a disc which has a multisession.
Seriously, wtf is going on? This is supposed to be Ubuntu's default CD authoring software.
I'm trying to install files and everytime I manage to install from the first disc I succeed. When I get the the second disc I just keep clicking the "OK" button instead of "Cancel" and it keeps neglecting it.
I'm sorry for this stupid question, but I have nowhere found it.I need to access to my USB disc from text mode (In Fedora LiveCD I see it and i can access /media/New Volume). In F12 runlevel 3 in mc I see it in /dev/disc/by-label as @Newx20Volume. But I don't know what is the correct path.
I have AMD athlon 64 processor, Seagate 160GB SATA Hard Disk, ASUS A8VMX mother board. With this configuration, I can Install FC7 without any error. But all the latest releases after FC7 is not detecting my Hard disk. Is there any solution to solve this problem? Actually I'm searching for a solution when the FC8 released. Now I have all the later releases from FC8 to FC11 DVD except FC9. But none is working .
I do a clean install of slackware64 13.1 beta1 with KDE and switch default runlevel to 4 in /etc/inittab.
I try to login in kdm, I always come back to the login....
I try this with default runlevel 3 and an .xinitrc with "ck-launch-session startkde" .. works without problems, so I switch back to default runlevel 4, now i can login and only get the error "Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session..."
apparently .xz files aren't readable by Ark, but I need my computer to be able to read it in order install a package. Does anybody know how or what I can do to allow my computer to read .xz packages?
On tis end I have a HP G71 laptop and Slackware v13 ...For whatever insane reason Slackware v13 does NOT come with Open Office and the user has to install the program on their own. With that said, I've gone the following route, several times and with zero success ... so you tell me:
.1. <usr> d/l the applicable Open Office files .2. <usr> unpack the files by way of tar -xvp and end up with *.rpm files .3. <usr> Switch to the RPM directory and use rpm2tgz to convert the *.rpm files to *.tgz files. .4. <usr> to <root> su -c installpkg ooo*.tgz and do the same with openoffice*.tgz. All seems to go well here. .5. <root> switch to desktop directory and remove Debian, Suse and Mandriva files. .6. <root> convert Slackware file to *.tgz .7. <root> installpkg openoffice
Using the above noted steps all seems to go well, until after re-booting and starting up "x" as either ROOT or as a USER ... nothing! The "x" window displays show the Open Office files to be there but clicking on them, all I get is a bouncing cursor for a few seconds - then nothing!
When I was trying to get vlc to open up an m4v I was downloading, I came across a file I had never heard of before. It was /usr/bin/[ which is a symbolic links to /bin/[ It's impossible to do a decent Google search for that.
What is the issue with slackware to open a *pps powerpoint file.I use Slack32.13Can't find any application in standard. Is there something in the slackbuils ?Don't want to install the whole Office
When trying to run X apps from terminal command line I getCannot open X display `:0.0'error.I tried export DISPLAY=0.0What do I need to do to permently fix this problem?

While making OT remarks is not a direct violation of the LQ Rules excessive use of it will impact the good atmosphere we believe is necessary. This goes of course for the OP as well as for anyone who replies. 15 percent fat is stretching it, hence the liposuction. This thread remains closed as it serves no purpose anymore.
Very wierd problem that seems to be happening in FF4 since upgrade to the latest 1337 rc. When clicking on a web link using the laptop touchpad, if I tap the middle of touchpad, the link will invariably open in a new tab, but tapping to either the LH or RH side of the touchpad opens the link in the existing window. Any FF gurus out there who may know of some hidden option that might be causing this, and how to disable it?, or do I need to file this as a bug?
I installed alsaequal URL....l and dependencies ladspa-sdk and caps, all via sbopkg.I'm getting this 'cannot open shared library' error even though that file does in fact exist at the indicated location.Has anyone run into this or successfully installed alsaequal? I also tried on a 13.1 install and got the same result.
I've been messing around with Slackware 13.1 and I screwed something up. I was trying to get Wicd to start automatically at startup so I found a chmod... line of code online and copy/pasted it on my command line. Now whenever I boot the computer, when I get to the KDE desktop, the BASH window opens, Opera opens and I get a bunch of Wicd error windows. How can I fix this?
I have two screens, my regular monitor and my TV. When I open a program, sometimes it opens on my monitor and sometimes it opens on my TV. I don't usually have my TV on, so I want to have everything to default to open on my monitor.
I have installed the Jack audio connection kit from [URL] The two listed dependencies, libsndfile and libsamplerate are installed and everything seemed to go well, except it's not listed in the KDE menus. But that's Ok. I can start it from /usr/bin/jackd But no I can't because I get these error messages:

where can get a open source RAR extractor that supports 64 bit Slackware system? I tried both unrar from GNA and RARlab but they didn't work on my system...
