Networking :: Can Not Ping 127.0.0.1 On Slackware / Cant Open The Settings For CUPS?
Jul 25, 2010
When I run:
# Ping 127.0.0.1
Returns nothing. As if expecting an answer that never comes. Then press Ctr + C and returns:
--- 127.0.0.1 ping statistics ---
117 Transmitted packets, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 116009ms
I use 3g modem connection configured with the command:
# pppsetup
The internet connection is normal. But without the ping localhost also can not open the settings for CUPS.
Here is my /etc/resolv.conf (if it helps in something):
google.com search
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.

I have installed Slackware 13 on one of the hard disks of my computer in order that I can get it working properly before changing over from 12.2.
My main problem is that I cannot get CUPS to change from 'Letter', which I presume is an American size, to A4, has anyone else had experience of this problem?

I have installed windows server 2003 on my computer, and i can surf the internet with my gui-based web browsers.
I have also installed vmware workstation 6.5 on the same computer, and successfully installed fedora 12 in vmware, with network is bridged.
I can successfully ping websites at the command line, e.g., ping [url], it did get replies with time and ttl, but i can't open the websites with firefox or conquerer browsers.

I am trying to ping my Windows machine connected to an open network (I'm at a internet caf) from my linux VM (also connected to the same network with a usb adapter), but I'm obtaining this output:
# ping 10.23.47.12
PING 10.23.47.12 (10.23.47.12) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 10.128.128.1 icmp_seq=1 Packet filtered
From 10.128.128.1 icmp_seq=2 Packet filtered
With high probability host 10.128.128.1 is a firewall or some router with packet filtering mechanism; but I don't understand how it can be possible to implement this kind of solution, with what kind of software or hardware? I also tried a nmap scan to my Windows machine but it returns me scan results from another host(the firewall or the router I suppose):
nmap -sS -O -P0 10.23.47.12
Starting Nmap 5.51 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-07-09 15:46 CDT
Nmap scan report for 10.23.47.12
Host is up (0.097s latency).
All 1000 scanned ports on 10.23.47.12 are filtered
[Code]...
So my questions is, how is technically possible to implement this kind of restriction within hosts connected on the same network? It's the first time I see this kind of configuration.

I have two major issues, and one minor one, after I started using Ubuntu, I tried searching the forum for them, but couldn't find anything relevant to my problems.First issue: Screenshots and the cursor. This is probably a very easily fixed issue, but none-the-less, I can not figure it out.How do I NOT include the cursor in my screenshots on Ubuntu 9.10?What I do is, I press the Prt Scrn button, and my cursor is always there in the image, and I don't want that.Second is pidgin.I love it, but every time I boot it up, my friendly name is reverted back to firefoxfag.I think it has something to do with me using gmail for msn, but I'm not sure...Also, as a last very small issue, the global hotkeys on audacious don't respond unless i open preferences, open settings for global hotkeys, then close down the settings..

Set up new server using RH 2.6.9-42.ELsmp on an old HP G4 server. But can't get network to work, can't ping any host, not even my gateway.
Verified cable by plugin a different pc on it, using same network ip address, etc, it worked fine, could ping gateway and other hosts on same segment. Are there any other files I could check to verify network card on server is good? it was working when it was configured as a windows server.

I have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.
When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.
If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.
I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.
I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.

I just installed my first EVER bind DNS server. I am running bind9 on Ubuntu 10.04. Everything seems to be working great except one thing: If I ping a host that I have set up in bind by its HOSTNAME the pings take 5-6 seconds to reply/print to the screen between each echo response. If I ping by the host's IP address, they echo back very quickly.
I have read that IPv6 can cause this, but I have disabled it in /etc/sysctl.conf and the problem still exists.
I know everyone says this can't be a DNS issue, but this never was an issue with dnsmasq (which i was using prior), and it doesn't make sense that the ping are ONLY slow when pinging by hostname and not IP.
Configs below:
Ping by hostname - there is a 5-6 second delay between each one of the responses:
Code:
Ping by IP - the responses come VERY quickly one after the other:
Code:
/etc/resolv.conf:
Code:
Code:
rev.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa:
Code:

So, I have an Virtual Machine running CentOS 5.4. It sits behind a hardware firewall which also does NAT'ing. I've set up plenty of these, so I know for sure the firewall and NAT rules are set up correctly. From the host, I can ping anything in my subnet and the gateway. But I can't ping anything else beyond the gateway. I can perform DNS queries and when I try to ping, it finds the appropriate IP address. But from the outside, I can ping the PUBLIC address (It's a 1 public to 1 private address NAT, not 1 public to multiple private). I've tried it with IPTABLES on and off, with no change.

I have Mandriva One 2009.0 (192.168.1.100) on one box and Mandriva Free 2010.0 (192.168.1.118) on the other. I can ping router (192.168.1.1) from both of these boxes but I can't ping one box to the other and the other way around. What's going on?.
Do I have to change some settings in router?. Or is it firewall issue on those two machines?. Both of these boxes are connected by cable. Symbol of the router: TL-WR340G.

I moved my server and network equipment, and now the wireless works but I cannot get my server online. I host a website, so this is kind of urgent.
I have a wireless router and can access the internet fine on my laptop. My server is wired & connected to the router. It sets up the networking properly.. ifconfig has an ip address, the default gateway is present. But I cannot ping google, or even the router. It says destination host unreachable.
So I go back to the laptop to check the router settings.. sometimes it likes to assign the server the wrong internal ip. But, I can't access the router settings either! The page (192.168.1.1) times out. Same with trying to ping the router. How can the laptop be online if it can't reach the router?
Oddly, ifconfig on my laptop reports an ip address starting with 99.233. It's always given me an internal address starting with 192.168. What's going on here? Is the router not allocating an internal ip? I use wicd to connect, if it's relevant.
We have a windows laptop that can only get a "local connection". Now it does sound like the router is forwarding directly to my laptop, instead of allocating internal ips.

I've got cups-pdf installed and working fine to print to PDF.
What I find kind of annoying is that it prints silently to ~/PDF with an automatic filename and with no feedback when it is done printing. So I have to monitor that directory manually for when a new file shows up.
What I'd like to have when I print to PDF is the output of cups-pdf piped to a pdf reader (like okular, in my case) which would open automatically when the printing is done so I can review the results and save or discard them.
I've looked through the options and tried to find documentation on cups-pdf, but I haven't found a way to make this happen yet.

I have connected xp and fedora through crossover cable . xp has ip address 192.168.0.1/24 (manually assigned) fedora has 192.168.0.2/24 with default route equal to 192.168.0.1
I can ping fedora from xp computer but i can't able to ping xp from fedora computer.
I have manully edit the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file with correct subnet mask and ip address because when i tried to give ip address manully in network manager the subnetmask is replaced with gateway address don't know why.
Now i want to share internet through crossover cable . xp is connected to internet through wireless usb adapeter.

I connect my laptop to several different networks and need to print in each of them when I am connected there. In the past (ie 12.2 and earlier) I solved this by running a cups server on the laptop and having it poll the appropriate cups servers in each network.
I was thinking that perhaps in 13.0 I could bypass having the cups server on the laptop and that KDE would "see" the various cups servers available. However this does not seem to work...

I've been running Slackware 13.37 since RC1 (so I'm a relatively new Slacker!). I set up CUPS to start as a default service during my install process. I print once in a while, but my computer is not a print-server per se. Do I have to have it auto-started in order to just be able to print on-demand (like, from LibreOffice or Okular)?

After upgrading to Slackware64 13.1 BETA1 my USB printer stopped working. Blacklisting usblp fixed it. See this thread regarding problems with CUPS 1.4.x. It might be a good idea to blacklist it by default in 13.1, just like Nouveau, as this appears to be a problem that has come to stay...

I have an HP Photosmart USB printer that I configured with HPLIP (which seemingly "exports" into CUPS). All is well until the printer is turned off and then back on again sometime later: somebody, somewhere automagically adds the printer to CUPS so that I have two, count 'em, printers defined.
Code:
Some UDEV rule, some other thing?

I'm trying to get HP DeskJet 1050 working on Slackware 13.1. When I plug it in to USB I can see it in lsusb. I've installed CUPS started it and went to add printer - but printer is not found. Ok, so I wanted to choose the series I have but 1050 is not listed in HP (is this driver missing?). So I went on to google on it and I got to HP website telling me to install HPLIP. Ok downloaded extracted and ./configure should run but it is not there (automatic script run has no Slackware listed).

I have a 2010 model laptop running slackware 13.1, and after setting up a udev rule for my epson rx700 printer/scanner, this laptop can print to the rx700 without problems, and I can scan straight into gimp with xsane... I can even share the printer and scanner over my local lan.however when I pack up my laptop and hit the road, the other folks in the house cannot print or scan over the network anymore, so I tried to get an older desktop we have laying about to be the cups / sane server instead of my laptop.I tried a Dell Dimension 8300, and a Dell Optiplex GX 260. Both have USB 2.0 however, on fresh slackware 13.37 installs, even after the udev rule, neither old computer is successful finding the scanner with sane-find-scanner, although it is listed in output of lsusb.
does anyone know if there is a workaround on these older machines, or have there been some hardware changes in the last 8 years that the machines haven't undergone, and I should give up trying to get one to be cups/sane server for rx700..

I have tried to use the driver provided by Canon or by the automatic detection by CUPS, but it ended with the same results

I installed openSUSE on one of my work system. The network port wasn't working when I was installing, but works fine now (checked in Windows). But for some reason, I am not able to configure the network. I used both Dynamic and Static IPs (both work fine in Windows) but still no go. I am using Yast Control Center for this purpose. I can't even ping the default gateway when I am using custom settings. When I use dynamic settings, it says Unreachable Network.

I've setup two slackware in a Dell Inspiron 640m e in Acer Aspire One D150.
In my router the domain is "home", the two slack use wicd (dhcpcd backend) to connect. I can go in internet.
The problem is that in my router panel I can see the hostname (so dhcpcd send the right one) but they can't ping other machine in the lan (windows 2000, nas or other linux box).
Now I can't use a fixed ip (i change several networks with different routers).
I think I miss something that can ask to my router the hostname.
Anyway I was able to ping Dell.local and Acer.local with Ubuntu karmic.
