Slackware :: Creating Partitions On New Lenovo Notebook?

May 27, 2010

I'm trying to create some Linux partitions to install Slackware on my Lenovo W510 notebook and I'm getting some partition "errors" when using fdisk or cfdisk during the Slackware install. I have a feeling this is due to the hidden system restore partition and was wondering how others have dealt with this.

Slackware :: Is It Safe To Resize Slackware Partitions After Removing Mint 10 Partitions?

Feb 17, 2011

I've reached a point in my Slackware journey where I feel confident enough to remove my Mint 10 linux. It used to be my 'go to distro' when I trashed my Slackware installation. Now, I have Slax on a USB and I think that is enough.Mint 10 occupies /dev/sda5 (root) and /dev/sda6 (home) while Slackware occupies /dev/sda7 (root) and /dev/sda8 (home). If I delete the /dev/sda5 & /dev/sda6 partitions, can I very safely resize /dev/sda7 and /dev/sda8 to use the space freed up?

OpenSUSE Install :: Lenovo W520 - Installation Fails When Formatting Partitions

May 6, 2011

I'm trying to install openSuSE 11.4 onto my brand-new Lenovo W520 laptop, using the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (FakeRAID?) controller, ROM version 10.1.0.1008. I have 2 physical 500GB disks configured in a mirror (RAID-1). Everything looks fine, the installation program comes up and asks if I want to use mdadm to manage the RAID, to which I answer yes. I go through the normal setup screens, and select the partition layout that I want (for sake of this post, I'll limit myself to the layout that the system itself recommends).

The problem comes when it becomes time to format the partitions. Somehow the partitioning program gets it into it's head that the root partition is 10TB, not 20GB, and the ext4 partitioning fails in various ways (short reads to sector zero, unable to map using 4096 byte sectors, etc, etc) depending on exactly which partitioning scheme I'm attempting. I pretty much get the same result no matter how I play the partitions, which file systems I use (XFS, ext4, etc [of course, I can't use XFS for /boot...]).

For now I've gone ahead and set myself up using software RAID, since this system is unlikely to become dual-boot with Windows for a few years at least. (As an aside, but as a hint to others, when the installation fails, I end up having to go back into the Intel RAID controller BIOS boot to clear out the entire RAID setup each time it fails - the disks are left in a completely useless state).

Slackware :: KDE On Lenovo With Suspend To RAM / Swap

Jun 2, 2010

While this is the second notebook I've had the luxury of running Slackware on, I have never used the the suspend to RAM / swap functions so all of this is new to me. With this new notebook and new installation of Slackware 13.1 I decided to give it a shot as it's definitely a power sucker. The machine is a Lenovo W510 with an NVidia graphics card running KDE. When I tell KDE to go to Sleep (RAM suspension) it looks like it does so properly by blanking the screen and pushing things to RAM. Is there a way to verify that Sleep is working? Anyway after unlocking the system my mouse pointer is no longer visible, however it is still active as I can hover over items to reveal their popups.

At this point none of my conky displays are transparent anymore, nor are they actively displaying stats. The windows I have set to display with 88% opacity are no longer as such and are completely opaque. It is as if all the custom window settings are ignored. If I move the the mouse towards the bottom of the screen the screen starts to go crazy with this rainbow of colors across the top of the screen and the only way to get out of this is to press Ctrl-ESC to bring up a System Activity window. I have not tried Hibernate yet as I would like to get this resolved first. Is Slackware 13.1 supposed to be able to Sleep/Hibernate with no special configuration and creation of scripts provided that the system can handle these functions?

Ubuntu Installation :: Creating Partitions Using Fdisk?

I have replaced master boot record during the installation of ubuntu as I dont want use red hat anymore. General :: Creating Image Of Drive Partitions

Jan 6, 2011

I have what I thought was a simple task of creating ISO images of my Windows 7 system partion and boot partiton (the C drive) on my physical hard drive that I could use to load Windows 7 onto a virtual machine. Anyway, I'm running Ubuntu off the CD drive and I can see my drive partions (checked using the fdisk -l command). I have tried many iterations of the mkisofs command, but no matter what I do I get the error message: unable to open disk image file 'dev/sdb/win7sys.iso'. I don't understand why it's trying to open an ISO file it is supposed to be creating. The -o FILE option sets the output file name, so the message makes no sense to me. Below is an example of a simple and longer version with more options that I have tried to create an image of my sytem partiton (sda1) and save it on an external drive (sdb) with the file name: win7sys.iso (the next step I think would be to create or merge both partition images as one iso file for the VM). But I can't get past this error.

Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

sudo mkisofs -o dev/sdb/win7sys.iso /dev/sda1

sudo sudo mkisofs -input-charset iso8859-1 -V win7sys -o dev/sdb/win7sys.iso /dev/sda1

* Note that the output after the -o parameter is the desired destination /dev/sdb (my external drive) for the image file and /dev/sda1 is my Windows 7 system or boot partition (sda2 is what Windows sees as the C drive).

Slackware :: Poweroff Does Not Turn Off Fujitsu N3530 Notebook?

Jun 17, 2010

I recently upgraded the hard drive on my Fujitsu N3530 notebook to WD Scorpio Blue 500 MB, and created a dual-boot configuration with WinXP, installing 32-bit Slackware 13.1 from DVD. Grub 0.97 bootloader is installed on superblock of root partition. Running KDE. Using the generic kernel with appropriate initrd for ext4 filesystem on root partition.

Everything runs fine so far, except the computer won't power off the computer. I've tried using the KDE shutdown, and shutting down from command line - same result. Also same result if I use the huge kernel or the generic kernel.

The last message I see is:
Remounting root filesystem read-only.
/dev/sda3 on / type ext4 (ro)
Power down.

... and then the shutdown process stalls and I have to turn off the computer by pressing and holding the power button.

This is the first time I've installed any Linux OS on this notebook. I have Slackware 13.0 running fine on a Thinkpad T61 with no poweroff issue.

From reading various posts, this looks to be related to ACPI. I tried adding "acpi=force" to the kernel line in menu.lst, but it made no difference.

/var/log/messages shows "acpid exiting" and then "exiting on signal 15" as last entries during shutdown.s.

OpenSUSE Install :: Creating Ghost Images Of Partitions?

Jan 19, 2010

I have been using GHOST for quite a few years to back up my Windoze partitions from NTFS to a series of images on a fat32 partition. I usually boot off a DOS7 bootable CD and simply ghost over to the fat32 partition.

I am rebuilding my laptops and desktops to dual boot Windows7 and Suse 11.2

My goal is to create restore images from my NTFS and ext3 partitions into directories on the fat32 partition for a restoration to my "gold baseline" build after any corruption.

My partition layout is below. This is output from gdisk.exe in DOS7. It's an 80gig drive.

2 = /boot
3 = swap
5 = /
6 = /fat32

From within Linux, what's the most risk-free way of imaging these two partitions and saving them to a single image file or archive? I want to preserve the entire partition because I have no idea what I may have forgotten to copy. What is the most suitable program that can do this?

Is there any way to run the partition in a virtual machine at a later date?

After this is done, I want to delete those old partitions and extend my Linux ones.

Server :: Creating A System Less Reliant On NFS Served Partitions

Feb 8, 2011

My chief file server (Dell PE R300) died last week with a disk error, and because it serves the /usr/local and /home partitions via NFS to my ~60 desktops, nobody could do any work until I managed to rig up another server and pull data off the backups. I'm using RHEL 4.To avoid this in future my plan is to knock up a dual server solution with DRDB and Heartbeat. In the meantime, is there a better way to allow desktop users to carry on working as normal, without relying on the file server too much? i.e. something better than NFS but not LDAP (I don't want to implement this just yet as the organisation as a whole may do this in the future)? My users need to be able to access the same home area on any linux desktop managed by me.Also, to implement DRDB/Heartbeat, it might be best to have the home areas on an external array, is that right? Can anybody recommend some hardware?

Slackware :: Choose Between The Lenovo Thinkpad W500 And The Older T61p?

Jul 9, 2010

I'm trying to choose between the Lenovo Thinkpad W500 and the older T61p. The W500 is said to have a higher quality display than the T61p, however there seem to be more problems with running Linux on it. One of the reasons for this is the fact that it has switchable graphics, with one of the GPUs being an ATI FireGL. The older T61p comes with Nvidia Quadro FX only, which as we know is more Linux-friendly.

Which model should I choose? Will certain issues such as being able to suspend / resume be cleared up with newer kernel releases?

Server :: Benefits To Creating Multiple Partitions For RAID1 Setups?

Dec 21, 2010

I am rebuilding a bunch of servers and want to do it right. They are Dell R200s and R300s with on-board LSI SAS1068E SCSI controllers with 2 SATA drives. The only RAID level supported on these cards is RAID 1. So, to the server, we have 148GB of space to deal with. They currently run 32-bit Ubuntu 8.10; I will be installing x64 Ubuntu 10.04.

I have always seen that it is best practice to partition in such a way that /boot, /var/log, /temp, and /home for example are separated out from /. Usually this is on a RAID5 or higher box. Is there any benefit to doing that sort of thing on a RAID1 box? I realize that this is in some ways a matter of opinion, but I would like the opinion of folks with experience. I'm pretty new to Linux in general.

The main services running on these boxes are Apache2, Tomcat6, MySQL, and Java.

Slackware :: Creating A Bootable DVD To Automatically Restore?

Feb 4, 2010

I'll be away from home for the following weeks (and perhaps months). I want to use the Internet with confidence, so I have setup an old computer with SSH and I'll be tunneling to that (from a netbook).I haven't remote-managed a computer for such a long time and I want to be sure that even if I do a mistake remotely, I can bring the computer back to a good known state. The home computer will reside inside my aunt's house and she knows very few about computers.

I've been thinking about burning a bootable DVD containing a tarball of a freshly configured Slackware. If I mess up, I can phone my aunt and tell her to simply put the DVD inside the drive and press ctrl-alt-del. The DVD boots, un-tars (the fresh Slackware), ejects the CD-tray, waits for her to press Enter, closes the tray, and finaly reboots to my good old known fresh Slackware.

Slackware :: Udev Not Creating Usb/hiddev* Nodes?

Dec 3, 2010

Are there any prerequisites which much be met in order for udev to create /dev/usb/hiddev* nodes?

I have two Slack 13.0 systems, each connected to a APC UPS via USB, one of which creates a hiddev0 node and the other doesn't. apcupsd can't find the UPS unless this node is present.

The "working" system has been stable in its current configuration for so long that I honestly can't remember if I had to tweak anything in this regard. I've verified that it doesn't use any local udev rules to create this node, and to the best of my knowledge there are no external scripts or processes which would create it either.

The non-working system has a similar configuration - no local rules and/or scripts which touch usb devices or nodes.

General :: Slackware 10 Will Not Let Me Create Partitions

Oct 27, 2010

OK, trying to install Slackware version 10 on the Athlon XP Shuttle PC and been hit back hard at the very first hurdle. In short I can't create a partition in Linux. At all!CD boots up OK. Loading in basic kernal.I try and create a partition using either fdisk or cfdisk.BOTH apps reports that the partition table cannot be written to! Both apps run read only mode.So I am unable to create any partitions in Linux.

I booted up a Windows 98 floppy and checked the partition table. Two x30GB partitions.I deleted both of them in case Linux did not like a Fat32 DOS/XP partition table.Tried again. Same read only messages.Attempt to use 'w' in fdisk reports the partition table cannot be written to.Viewing the partion table returns nothing, no matter how I set it up in DOS/Windows.

Only clue is that to my surprise, the DVD RW drive is the Primary master and the 60GB HD is the secondary master. I must have slipped up installing the drives years ago and Windows didn't care. Would Linux? Other than that, nothing in the BIOS that gives a clue. I turned off ACPI support in case. I also tried the ACPI kernal. No joy there either. But DOS/Windows quite happy to build partitions.Cfdisk states that no partition tables exist even after Windows has just created one.So I am at a loss.Any clues? This is a Shuttle PC so the tech is a bit propritory but nothing that various renderings of Windows have not handled.

Slackware :: How To Dual Boot 2 Partitions

Apr 22, 2011

Slackware 13.0 32-bit is installed on /dev/sda5 with lilo written to that partition. Everything works and I have a nice lilo boot menu (for a WinXP bootable partion). Recently I installed Slack 13.0 64-bit on /dev/sdb5. This also succeeded (apparently). After reboot I was presented with my old boot menu, selected the 32-bit Linux option (/dev/sda5) and after login went to /etc/lilo.conf where I entered a boot stanza for /dev/sdb5 (64-bit linux), and then ran /sbin/lilo. No errors flagged. After reboot there was a 64-bit entry in the boot menu, but when selected it led to kernel panic. Further although I can mount /dev/sdb5 from the 32-bit partition there is nothing in it except lost+found.

So the current position is that I can't access my 64-bit linux partition (/dev/sdb5) to change anything in it (even boot: root=/dev/sdb5 at the boot prompt doesn't seem to work).how do I obtain access to /dev/sdb5? Second question is what items do I need in the 32-bit lilo.conf boot stanza so as to be able to boot to that 64 linux partition?

PS: OK I noticed one warning when I ran lilo.....

bash-3.1# lilo
Warning: LBA32 addressing assumed
Added Slack *
Added Slack64

[code]....

Maybe the problem is with the 32-bit addressing? How do I get lilo to use LBA32 for the 32-bit partition (/dev/sda5) and LBA64 addressing for the 64-bit partition (/dev/sdb5)?
