Slackware :: Creating A Salix Root Account?

Oct 25, 2010

I am an experienced Linux user, but have never used Salix before. I have a root account set up on my other Linux distros, but can not figure it out using Salix. The reason I want a root account in Salix because I believe in freedom of choice, and my choice always was and always will be to have a root account set up so I can login as root. I am aware of the risk involed in creating a root account.

Slackware :: Flash Performance Salix / Move The Mouse, Then The Whole Picture Freezes?

Apr 2, 2010

I installed SalixOS on my laptop just to play with when I'm bored. My laptop is nothing special, it's a couple of years old has a pentium dual core t2390 at 1.86Ghz and 3 GB ddr2 RAM with Intel video.

I then have a beast i7 920 clocked to 3331Mhz 6GB RAM, and an NVIDIA GT220. Full screen ..... at 720p is fine unless I move the mouse, then the whole picture freezes. Persistant mouse movement will freeze the screen for a few minutes. This machine runs both slack64 current and slack13 32 bits.

The slack box does much better with 32 bit flash than 64, but it still doesn't do nearly as well as the laptop.

With Salix and Slack being so close to each other supposedly I can't figure out why the hardware seems to be irrelevant. The only thing I can think of would be the video codecs installed by Salix, whereas I built a bunch of codecs myself for Slack.

General :: Partitioning For Slackware 10.1 - Require Traditional Root Account

Aug 31, 2009

In the ubuntu series I find my hard disk description as this: /dev/sda. As we know in slackware (10.1) for partitioning we either use 'fdisk' or 'cfdisk' when I use fdisk, like mentioned: fdisk /dev/sda. It says disk cannot be found.... or something like that. I think I know why?

You see my hard disk has the D: E: F: as extended partitions comprising logical drives and only my C: drive is pure primary. Does this have any connection with my problem? As from my explanation you can find that I'm a total wreck with computers.. but I'm very thrilled to learn linux. The reason why I need slax is that I require a traditional root account.

Slackware :: New Install (Salix 13 Not Slack) Volume Wheel On Toshiba A205 Laptop Doesn't Work?

Mar 21, 2010

I am playing with SalixOS which is supposed to be entirely compatible with Slack. I've never put Slack proper on this laptop. It's run Ubuntu and Mandriva both and the volume wheel always works. It does not seem to be recognized in Salix. I figure the fix will be the same in Salix as Slackware so I'm asking here. The laptop is an A205 Toshiba Satellite.

Server :: Fedora Sending Mails From Root With Non-root Account?

Jul 14, 2011

I've started to get emails that would typically come from [URL] as [URL]. These emails come from services that send out emails (backup programs) directly, or from cronjobs. I've logged in as the non-root account and either sudo su - or su - to root and the restart the service at one point or another. If I login directly as root and bounce the service or cron the emails come across as from root. I don't see anything in my environment variables after I su to indicate what would cause this. I'm not sure where else to look? A pam setting? This seems to have happened between Fedora 10 and 14 (did a bunch of overdue upgrades recently) I've only got Fedora so I don't have anything to compare to. In Fedora 10 I did not have this problem.

a* A password expiration date.

c* The user's default shell.
d* The user's NIS or LDAP group.
e* The user's home directory.
Which is the correct answer? I have my own thinking which will be explained later.

Server :: Creating Qmail Auto Responder For One Account?

Dec 29, 2010

I have a qmail server running, I want to create an autoreponder for one of my accounts using the autorepond for qmail, and I did that the problem is that I receive a very strange response

-It writes the subject inside the message.
-It writes the From inside the message.
-It does not show HTML when it append the original message.

So I want to have my subject written in the mail subject instead of RE:. Also I want to be able to show HTML inside the auto replay mail.

This is my .qmail file:
Code:
/home/vpopmail/domains/XXXXXXXX.com/freestuff/Maildir/
| /usr/bin/autorespond 86400 3 /home/vpopmail/domains/XXXXXXXX.com/freestuff/vacation/message /home/vpopmail/domains/XXXXXXX.com/freestuff/vacation

This is the replay I receive after I have removed the From and Subject from the message as you can see in the message file.
Code:
Thanks for entering our Free Stuff competition.
We've got lots of fantastic free stuff to give away every week on www.XXXXXXX.com so stay tuned!
All the best!

Original Message
With the Subject : RE: test
Also the HTML in the original message does not appear
I have read that you should write the header in the message file but also does not work, it send them with the auto replay.

Ubuntu Security :: Remotely Creating A Desktop Account On Another System?

Mar 25, 2010

I am at my own desktop and I have root access on my own desktop.

I also have root access on a Desktop Ubuntu system (192.168.5.10) on the LAN. I need to create another desktop user account on that 192.168.5.10 system.

So I logged into that system with: ssh -Y myself@192.168.5.10
Then I did: sudo users-admin

This brings up the Users Settings but the Add User and Unlock buttons are disabled. How do I enable these buttons?

Debian :: Using Root Account With Or Without Slash?

I came to debian from fedora so there I used ( su - ) to become root user. So my question is that in debian, is it same using ( su ) and ( su - ) or here also using ( su - ) is preferred with slash or without slash. What is the correct and secure way in debian with full root status.

One more question relating gedit sources.list

I use as root account : gedit /etc/apt/sources.list (and then enter and sources file in gedit open)

Is this correct method or any other way as when save after changing entries inside it says error.

Software :: Run Pulseaudio In Root Account?

Mar 29, 2011

What file needs to be modified so that Pulseaudio starts automatically when in the root account? Currently, it is necessary to start Pulseaudio from the "Run" dialog when in the root account. I recall there was a file that prevents Pulseaudio from being run as root and that particular line had to be deleted in order for it to work.

I prefer to run my computer from the root account. If not, do not preach about the "dangers" of running as root.
