OpenSUSE Install :: Creating Ghost Images Of Partitions?

I have been using GHOST for quite a few years to back up my Windoze partitions from NTFS to a series of images on a fat32 partition. I usually boot off a DOS7 bootable CD and simply ghost over to the fat32 partition.
I am rebuilding my laptops and desktops to dual boot Windows7 and Suse 11.2
My goal is to create restore images from my NTFS and ext3 partitions into directories on the fat32 partition for a restoration to my "gold baseline" build after any corruption.
My partition layout is below. This is output from gdisk.exe in DOS7. It's an 80gig drive.
1 = Windows-7
2 = /boot
3 = swap
5 = /
6 = /fat32

I am not sure this is the right forum, its more about partitions, but it is a bit like it. This is the problem; I have a problem concerning my partitions; I run Opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.4.4 (standard issue) 64 bit.When I installed suse I had only attached one harddisk. A 1.5 Tbhardisk. In that I had made a 50 Gb partition and installed Windows. I tried out linux mint, just for the fun, and thenI installed Opensuse, let it erase mint and gave it another 50 Gb In that it made home etc. The rest Suse also formatted in ext4. Somehow it didn't get a mount point.I then attached second and third harddrive, and gave them mount points Windows/E and F respectively. (They are formatted in ntfs-3g)Yesterday I decided to give it a mountpoint, and gave it /windows/DI changed my mind and changed it to /home2In both these places I could access it but only as read only. And most weird of all, it had a lot of files in them, very much looking like root.
My questions are; How can I access and use that partition?What might these files be? Can I delete them? How would I best mount them? This is a picture of yast expert partitionerImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing

I'm currently running a Ubuntu 9.10 64bit machine with one of those 2TB WD disks that does have 4KB blocks.Unfortunately the current partition layout is misaligned, so I plan to back up my home directory and start fresh with a 10.04 install, trying to make the partitions aligned as suggested here:what I'm wondering is, does the 10.04 partitioning program take care of the alignment today or I have to resort doing manual partitioning with a separate tool?

I would like to run a copy of my live webserver in a Virtual PC on Windows so whenever I need to install new stuff on my webserver, I can "practice" first on the virtual copy.It doesn't need to be an exact copy: I'm not really interested in having a copy of all domains on the webserver.Is there a way to do that without having to take the webserver offline?

I have vista and opensuse 11.2 on my computer, the problem is i can't open ext3 partitions from vista but i can the other way. I tried Ext2fsd but the linux partition is always in a read only mood even when i change this option. Also, all folders are empty I downloaded the program as admin and compatable with XP SP2.

the title says it all, mkinitramfs isnt creating proper initrd images. it used to work properly in karmic, but now i get an error saying 5: scripts/functions not found. wat does that mean? oh and also, when i boot into the new custom kernel, i am thrown into initramfs shell

Say I have an image of a file system. I made it with dd by copying it off my USB stick. e.g. "sudo dd if=/dev/sdb1 of=./image.ext2" I can mount said image with the command: "sudo mount -t ext2 -o loop ./image.ext2 /mnt/" Now, say instead of copying a partition with dd, I copy a whole drive. e.g. "sudo dd if=/dev/sdb of=./image.img". sdb had 2 partitions on it. How can I mount those separate partitions without copying that image back onto the USB drive?

We are in the process of pruning our directories to recuperate some disk space.
The 'algorithm' for the pruning/backup process consists of a list of directories and, for each one of them, a set of rules, e.g. 'compress *.bin', 'move *.blah', 'delete *.crap', 'leave *.important'; these rules change from directory to directory but are well known. The compressed and moved files are stored in a temporary file system, burned onto a blue ray, tested within the blue ray, and, finally, deleted from their original locations.
I am doing this in Python (basically a walk statement with a dictionary with the rules for each extension in each folder).
Do you recommend a better methodology for pruning file systems? How do you do it?

I am thinking of using flash drives to boot linux image files instead of iso files. I remember reading in the past that booting off USB flash drives were sometimes problematic -- and I don't know if they're still are. I want to know from your personal experience what type and brand of flash drive has work for you in creating a bootable flash image.

I would like to have your opinion on the problem : I created a ghost of my server RHEL4 with RAID 1 and 5, then I wanted to reinstall it on a virtual server under vmware.
So I restore the image on a virtual disk and qand I restart I still have this problem :
I started in linux rescue mode F5 I reinstall Grub on sda
I modified the modules.conf file to change the BusLogic SCSI, but this module is not in the kernel I used kudzu to reconfigure it doesn't works...

I am just spent half an hour hunting for a thing that should be totally available already:USB install images of Ubuntu, knoppix and all the others.And, the only good way are so far complicated tutorials where you extract the stuff from an CD image. Why??Hasn't everybody notices that CDs/DVDs are vanishing big time? That more and more systems don't have the readers anymore? Instead of following a 10 point instruction list, it would be nice to just be able to download a Ubuntu 8.10 or whatever USB image and be able to beam that DIRECTLY to a USB stick with a dd command.
Or am a missing something here? Does this exist?It should by no means be mariginal, considering how important USB stick in specific and flash memory in general have become.

I have managet to customize my logon screen the way i want it,
1.
Problem is i do not wish to have background imege at bootsplash screen (still want to receive option how to boot just simple text);
2.
And later when system is loading modules and starting i just want to have simple black background on my screen, with nice text (verbose) telling me what is done.

I have a dell poweredge 2950 server which had red hat on it. I have installed ubuntu on top of it. I have replaced master boot record during the installation of ubuntu as I dont want use red hat anymore. During the installation it asked me for the space I wanted to give for Ubuntu and I provided 10GB. Now I can use only 10GB of my harddrive until I mount other partitions correct?
So when I type sudo fdisk -l I get the below printed:

I have what I thought was a simple task of creating ISO images of my Windows 7 system partion and boot partiton (the C drive) on my physical hard drive that I could use to load Windows 7 onto a virtual machine. Anyway, I'm running Ubuntu off the CD drive and I can see my drive partions (checked using the fdisk -l command). I have tried many iterations of the mkisofs command, but no matter what I do I get the error message: unable to open disk image file 'dev/sdb/win7sys.iso'. I don't understand why it's trying to open an ISO file it is supposed to be creating. The -o FILE option sets the output file name, so the message makes no sense to me. Below is an example of a simple and longer version with more options that I have tried to create an image of my sytem partiton (sda1) and save it on an external drive (sdb) with the file name: win7sys.iso (the next step I think would be to create or merge both partition images as one iso file for the VM). But I can't get past this error.
Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

* Note that the output after the -o parameter is the desired destination /dev/sdb (my external drive) for the image file and /dev/sda1 is my Windows 7 system or boot partition (sda2 is what Windows sees as the C drive).

I'm trying to create some Linux partitions to install Slackware on my Lenovo W510 notebook and I'm getting some partition "errors" when using fdisk or cfdisk during the Slackware install. I have a feeling this is due to the hidden system restore partition and was wondering how others have dealt with this.

I am attempting to use SuseStudio "preload" and "live" .iso images and the instructions at SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE to create a bootable USB drive.dd_rescue ends after the expected amount of time--without reporting errors--yet "fdisk -l" reports that the device does not contain a valid partition table. The USB key does not boot and appears to have no data.
For what it's worth, my build host is Gentoo on 2.6.39, and I have the latest dd-rescue available. The USB disk is a PNY attache 4GB and works fine with any ISO's supported by unetbootin. The only other bare metal I have here is a netbook running Mepix, so I can't make use of solutions that start with "Boot your existing OpenSuse workstation

I am installing Linux on some spare space I left over from my previous two Windows installations.
From within Linux, what's the most risk-free way of imaging these two partitions and saving them to a single image file or archive? I want to preserve the entire partition because I have no idea what I may have forgotten to copy. What is the most suitable program that can do this?
Is there any way to run the partition in a virtual machine at a later date?
After this is done, I want to delete those old partitions and extend my Linux ones.

My chief file server (Dell PE R300) died last week with a disk error, and because it serves the /usr/local and /home partitions via NFS to my ~60 desktops, nobody could do any work until I managed to rig up another server and pull data off the backups. I'm using RHEL 4.To avoid this in future my plan is to knock up a dual server solution with DRDB and Heartbeat.In the meantime, is there a better way to allow desktop users to carry on working as normal, without relying on the file server too much? i.e. something better than NFS but not LDAP (I don't want to implement this just yet as the organisation as a whole may do this in the future)? My users need to be able to access the same home area on any linux desktop managed by me.Also, to implement DRDB/Heartbeat, it might be best to have the home areas on an external array, is that right? Can anybody recommend some hardware?

After a fresh install of opensuse 11.3 x86_64, using a NET install CD, I noticed that the boot disk layout has overlapping partitions. I've noticed one other post that mentioned this at the very end. Is this a known problem already? Or is there something I'm missing that makes this okay?

I have a lot of RAR files and ISO. Is there a program like Winrar which could open them in Linux? Cause now it only opens zip files . Also I would like to know what the best package manager is (I mean the easiest -used to use the Software Manager in Mint 9 Xfce).At last I would like to know if there is a good program to make disk images to reset the system.

I am rebuilding a bunch of servers and want to do it right. They are Dell R200s and R300s with on-board LSI SAS1068E SCSI controllers with 2 SATA drives. The only RAID level supported on these cards is RAID 1. So, to the server, we have 148GB of space to deal with. They currently run 32-bit Ubuntu 8.10; I will be installing x64 Ubuntu 10.04.
I have always seen that it is best practice to partition in such a way that /boot, /var/log, /temp, and /home for example are separated out from /. Usually this is on a RAID5 or higher box. Is there any benefit to doing that sort of thing on a RAID1 box? I realize that this is in some ways a matter of opinion, but I would like the opinion of folks with experience. I'm pretty new to Linux in general.
The main services running on these boxes are Apache2, Tomcat6, MySQL, and Java.

I've just installed 11.4 and then updated to gnome 3. I've noticed that Nautilus doesn't appear to mount my windows NTFS partition. I find this odd because both Ubuntu and Fedora detect and mount it just fine in Gnome 3 (I've been trying all 3 this week).

I had a Windows 7 RC/openSUSE 11.1 dual-boot on this computer running on RAID 1. When I installed Windows 7 final, somehow it screwed up my RAID 1. I fought with it for a while, but decided to wipe the logical drive, and then go into BIOS and disable RAID. I reinstalled Windows 7 on the HDD, but I have no RAID now. BIOS shows 4 SATA drives. Windows sees all of them just fine. But the openSUSE 11.2 install DVD can't see any partitions on sda, sdb, sdc or sdd. It however says I still have two RAID logical drives, which I don't. I'd really like to install openSUSE 11.2, but I want it to recognize my Windows partitions, if for no other reason that to see my MP3 collection, my eBooks, etc.

Operating System Windows Vista Home Basic (Service Pack 1)(varies by model) Anyways here is what happens, and this only happens to me when i run linux. THIS NEVER HAPPENED WHILE RUNNING WINDOWS VISTA OR WINDOWS XP. First icons will disapear and text will not work, images wont be there, system dock and explorer will just not work, the start menu will have nothing in it, and when i restart it, (manual) it will boot and show me specs and say "NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND" and when i go into BIOS it says IDE0:_______ not the hard drive name and size like it usually does.
