Wondering what software everyone uses to make DVD movies? Specifically looking for an easy solution to convert mpeg's and avi's. The is the only action my windows partition gets and I would like to finally get rid of it.

This is what I did:
I created in
/var/www/html
ln -s /home/username/movies movies
Then in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

Restart apache and then the test page is working.
The directory /home/username/movies has following permissions:
drwxrwxrwx 2 apache apache 4096 2009-03-05 23:43 movies
When trying to access my webpage at localhost/movies I get the 403 Forbidden Error.
Ok then, entering:
sudo -u apache ls /var/www/html
> movies
This works, sudo -u /var/www/html/movies returns the permission denied error.
As well sudo -u /home/username/movies
Is the user apache chrooted by default? SELinux is in permissive mode. What can I do?
My Canon PowerShot A590IS digital camera records movies with a format of:
Stream #0.0: Video: mjpeg, yuvj422p, 640x480, 20 tbr, 20 tbn, 20 tbc
Stream #0.1: Audio: pcm_u8, 11024 Hz, mono, s16, 88 kb/s
For whatever reason, XBMC refuses to play the audio. Xine plays the audio but with a distressing static noise. MPlayer and Kaffeine play the files fine. The bottom line is XBMC and Xine seem to dislike pcm_u8 audio, or the way the audio is streamed with the video.I also cannot fast-forward the movies with some players, such as MPlayer or SMPlayer.
I haven't found whether I can select a different format with the camera, but to avoid player problems I'd like to convert the videos. My primary focus is playing in XBMC and Xine because I have both apps configured to be controlled with a remote control. What is the most compatible format to convert? This is with 12.2 or 13.0. I have ffmpeg, mplayer, and mencoder installed and probably all or most codecs I could use.
The intent is to use Mplayer without X or any other window manager/GUI to watch movies on TV. A simple 'mplayer movie.avi' command works fine, except that it locks out the keyboard and mouse. We're using the latest mplayer and slack 13.0 with the 2.6.29.6 kernel. Using mplayer under X presents no problems, but the use of anything but the console is NOT possible now. The whole problem is figuring out what to do to regain control of the keyboard.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI like this linux distribution more than the others that i have used, because is more stable for my work. But there are some little problems that I can't solve. I'm using it with a laptop HP G60 and i can run OpenOffice, Mozilla and some other programs (python, grass, qgis) that used for work at the office, but when I go home and want to watch a movie with my girl, listen some music or any other simple task, i find a lot of little problems:
1. Adjust the bright of the screen, the Power Management Guidance don't do it and I really need it.
2. Can't play movies in VLC "No suitable decoder module. VLC does not support the audio or video format XVID. Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this"
3. And today I can't play music because there is a message "KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed" this is: Output HDA Intel, INTEL HDMI 0 (HDMI Audio Output)
I know maybe these problems are stupid but in windows is easier to fix them. I'm tired of search in google because i just find solved problems for Ubuntu and it takes a lot of time.
As far as I can tell, I have all the applicable applications and plugins (for this, Debian 5.0.6 installation). I type in Code:about:plugins in either iceweasel or epiphany browser and get a list that includes:

Running against a situation here, for which I have solutions in mind, but for some reason or another they don't really strike me as "good" solutions.
I am making a customized for myself (eg with postgreSQL support) php package. Configure and make run fine; but upon make install the make tries to access httpd.conf in the $DESTDIR/etc/httpd
My first thought is: prior to 'make install' copy the file from /etc/httpd to the target dir;

Slackware 13.0, about to install it. I do have an existing Ubuntu installation with a roomy 5 GB of swap.

I'll be away from home for the following weeks (and perhaps months). I want to use the Internet with confidence, so I have setup an old computer with SSH and I'll be tunneling to that (from a netbook).I haven't remote-managed a computer for such a long time and I want to be sure that even if I do a mistake remotely, I can bring the computer back to a good known state.The home computer will reside inside my aunt's house and she knows very few about computers.
I've been thinking about burning a bootable DVD containing a tarball of a freshly configured Slackware. If I mess up, I can phone my aunt and tell her to simply put the DVD inside the drive and press ctrl-alt-del. The DVD boots, un-tars (the fresh Slackware), ejects the CD-tray, waits for her to press Enter, closes the tray, and finaly reboots to my good old known fresh Slackware.
I'm trying to create some Linux partitions to install Slackware on my Lenovo W510 notebook and I'm getting some partition "errors" when using fdisk or cfdisk during the Slackware install. I have a feeling this is due to the hidden system restore partition and was wondering how others have dealt with this.

The reason I want a root account in Salix because I believe in freedom of choice, and my choice always was and always will be to have a root account set up so I can login as root. I have two Slack 13.0 systems, each connected to a APC UPS via USB, one of which creates a hiddev0 node and the other doesn't. apcupsd can't find the UPS unless this node is present.
The "working" system has been stable in its current configuration for so long that I honestly can't remember if I had to tweak anything in this regard. I've verified that it doesn't use any local udev rules to create this node, and to the best of my knowledge there are no external scripts or processes which would create it either.
The non-working system has a similar configuration - no local rules and/or scripts which touch usb devices or nodes.
I have two computers with SATA drives and burners installed, and when I try to burn a DVD or CD on either one it comes out corrupt. I have NO such problems on my older IDE drives. Is there a setting I'm missing? I'm getting sick and tired of making coasters.
View 3 Replies View RelatedCurrently running Slackware 13.37 64-bit on a notebook and finally have suspend/hibernate after realizing that USB devices, especially USB HDDs, need to be disconnected before suspend/hibernate can work. Problem is I have 2 USB HDDs that are connected to my notebook whenever the notebook is stationary for the extra storage so I'd like to create a script that would get invoked that would stop the suspend/hibernate process if certain partitions are mounted. I know what I would like to accomplish, but I have basic scripting knowledge
1. script would basically store a user specified string containing devices that are non-USB, ie: $NONUSB="/dev/sda /dev/sdb"
2. possibly use /etc/mtab to get a list of what is currently mounted and then remove lines containing whatever is specified in $NONUSB and store those values in $USB
3. run a for loop that executes 'umount' on each token in $USB
3a. stop suspend/hibernate process if 'umount' fails at any point
3b. if 'umount' passes then suspend/hibernate
I have just switched from F10 to F12 via a fresh install. To be honest I am having difficulties getting around with the new release. For starters, watching movies causes one of my CPUs to go 100% when full screen. As you can guess watching movies doesn�t go smooth. It happens on every possible player. It doesn�t matter if I switch on or off compositing.

I try with VLC "Tools --> Preferences --> Video --> Display --> Output" and i can see movies, but with a very very bad quality and the films stopped very times.
View 12 Replies View RelatedUsing Ubuntu 9.04 on a Gateway laptop, I have it plugged in via VGA port on my laptop to my TV, and when I play a movie using Totem or VLC, I can see the movie on the laptop but there is just a black window on the TV in the movie player window. My Desktop appears fine and I can use my TV like a monitor in that respect, but I can't watch any movies.

The DVDs that won't play in linux works fine in windows and my tabletop dvd player.
I do have libdvdcss2, libdvdread4 and other modules to play both encrypted and non-encrypted DVDs.
Like I said, I can play many of my dvd movies in linux with only a few that don't. Has anyone experience this situation in linux with some of your own DVD movies?
I can't seem to get any DVD movies to work in movie player. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot?

I've tried pretty much every DVD ripping program available, DVD::Rip, DVD95converter, DVD Movie Backup. My favorite backup program is k9copy (easiest to use and has all the features I need). But no matter what I try, certain Disney movies just won't backup. Specifically, at the moment, many of the Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli films.
After selecting the disc, the program either crashes out immediately, or it starts filling up the memory, slowing everything down, until finally it crashes. I thought updating to the newest version would maybe help (not even available through standard "Update Manager", had to find it myself), but the same problems occur. I'm currently trying with ddrescue, hoping that works. But I don't really like the idea of using a series of programs to get the output I want.
Is there a program that can backup, compress, and convert a Disney movie into a playable/burnable ISO file? Because these films are Japanese, I would definitely prefer something that can output normal switchable subtitles and audio (as opposed to an MPG or AVI that just has the one audio track).
How can I play DVD movies with Ubuntu9.1? I had it working at one time and wiped my harddrive reinstalling Ubuntu9.1. Even with VLC I can't watch a movie.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to cancel our cable tv. We don't really use it except for the kids and they don't care what's on as long as it's animated.
That being said, we have a ton of kid movies we want to try to burn to the computer and share those to the XBox. I know that Windows has a way of sharing files using Windows Media Player and sharing to the XBox, but I wasn't sure if there was another way.
First of all: I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal x64 on a Athlon 64 X2 2.1Ghz, with a NVidia GeForce 8600GT(quite old, i know). I Have 2 Monitors and generally use the 2nd to watch movies, music videos, things like that on Windows 7 and wanted to do that on Ubuntu too. But it won't let me drag anything on the 2nd monitor as it holds the cursor on the 1st monitor when dragging programs/windows/anything. Using Xinerama(on Xserver) give strange thing when 2nd monitor is totally black, can't see any menus and can only do anything by keyboard shortcut
