Slackware :: Enable Windows Wireless Drivers In Slackware 13.1 And How To Install XFCE
Aug 22, 2010I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

May 28, 2011I'm reading the 3rd official handbook in beta version and I learn that the automated tool "slackpkg" exists only since Slackware 12.1.Before that, how did users install new packages and their libraries ? Did they search each package with their web browsers and then install manually? For me, it seems tedious because I usually work with distributions like Fedora, Debian which use an online package management.Is there another way to download it from console and without web browser?

Oct 3, 2010i need to use the realtime kernel because i use jack audio connection kit so i tried to install the realtime kernel from the install/remove software program. I've found 2 kernels : Kernel-trace and kernel-rt i tried both of 'em but i cannot boot up suse. The first one gets to 3/4 of the loading bar , i hear the welcome sound and then it won't do anything else. The second won't do anything, black screen.

Jun 13, 2011Not sure if I have landed in right place for this question .Problem FacedI have 30-40 heavy load (Memory operations on heap) processor running with each having 30-40 threads.In one of the thread (of each process), I have file locking operation as explained below (say in thread T1)Step 1 - Lock the file using fcntl(SETWLK) on file f1, Basically using wait lock.Step 2 - Read/write data from another file f2.Step 3 - unlock the file f1.As the memory occupied by process increased, the swap area used will reduce - this continues for a long amount of period. When the free swap space is reduced to 100 MB free out of 2 G and VIRT reduces to 120MB free out of 17G, for T1 thread, Step 3 is not scheduled for more than 300 seconds after Step 1 and 2.

One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect.Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Jun 20, 2010I have installed compiz in slakcware 13.1 32 bit. i enable compiz in KDE + emerald (until this step, i didn't encounter a problem). But after i want to enable compiz in same PC and same OS but different username, the window decoration show same problem, it's missing !
That problem occur when i use KDE (it's same window manager that i use to install compiz in the first user). but if the second user use XFCE and i enable compiz + emerald, it's weird...it didn't show any problem...it's perfect.
But the problem is, if the second user want to use KDE desktop and enable compiz...that problem occur again...

When I do a crontab -l -u <user>, I get a listing of the crontab file, but it never is executed.
I've been reading about cron.allow and cron.deny, but I can't find those in the slackware distro. Is there something special that I need to do to allow user crontabs in Slackware? (version 13.1 if that helps)

However, my wife doesn't know (or care to know) the root password, but she would like to be able to shutdown the computer.I tried making a /etc/shutdown.allow file, and typing

/sbin/shutdown -a -h now from her account, but it didn't work. I got an error that one has to be root to do that.
So, how do I allow regular users to shutdown?

I used to work in tech support and when a windows or OSx machine didn't connect properly on a LAN, disabling IPV6 was a common troubleshooting step. Is there a way to easily turn inet6 connectivity off/on in Slackware? (I want to keep the ability to get an IPv6, we will all use those in the future)
