While I'm a fan of Gnome, I'd prefer if the user "kids" logs in as KDE by default. Is there any way to toggle which desktop environment it automatically logs in to?

If this is correct, how do you know if there updates available?
Do you need to down load and install the individual updated packages?
Sorry for this but I think that I am confused, or worse, not.

I am openbox user and yesterday I tested new Xfce 4.8 on Slack 13.1. But problem is the same as in older release. Xrandr autostart. I use LCD connected on my notebook and autostart script in Xfce is slow, cant set right resolution on boot. System start, and blink monitor and set correct resolution 1920x1200 on LCD Monitor after 0.5 seconds. This gave my effect of 2 desktop resolution. I put my script to xinitrc.
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1920x1200 &
but this not help. script is not executed. Then I set autostart xrandr script with GUI tool
Session and Startup but nothing helps. Xfce still gave me next effect. Openbox use /home/mame/.config/autostart and have no problem set the corrent resolution of my LCD on boot.

A few days ago I tried out Fedora 14, but it didn't really live long. However, I have now Slackware on my netbook again. While I was trying Fedora I installed Clementine and I had to install an extra mp3 lib (I installed Fluendo MP3) to enable mp3 support. On my main machine I have also installed Slackware and Clementine and I can play mp3, so I ponder where's Slackware's mp3 lib? I egrep'ed /var/log/packages for "mp3" but I couldn't find any appropriate. Does Slackware use a shared mp3 lib or is the mp3 support in all the programs?

I've been trying to compile and install different terminal emulators:Eterm, aterm, and libAfterImage for urxvt.
I've been getting all these errors, and it seems odd to me. I did some fiddling awhile back enabling KMS with my radeon, install custom packages for xf86-ati, mesa, and libdrm. Could that or some other fiddling have broken these dependencies?
Here is an excerpt, with the full error log attached and here:url

How to install software? I'm looking to install Google Music Manager since they finally released the Linux client a few days ago, but it seems that it only comes in .deb and .rpm
As far as I can tell, Slackware doesn't use either of these formats, so does that mean it's impossible for me to install this program? I suppose I've been spoiled by just having to double click. exe files in Windows, but I'm up for learning and so far really like what Linux has to offer.
Also, could anyone explain why there are so many different formats for installing programs in Linux? It just seems like a pain to developers to have to package things in so many ways, especially when there are so many different Linux distributions.

I have installed compiz in slakcware 13.1 32 bit. i enable compiz in KDE + emerald (until this step, i didn't encounter a problem). But after i want to enable compiz in same PC and same OS but different username, the window decoration show same problem, it's missing !
That problem occur when i use KDE (it's same window manager that i use to install compiz in the first user). but if the second user use XFCE and i enable compiz + emerald, it's weird...it didn't show any problem...it's perfect.
But the problem is, if the second user want to use KDE desktop and enable compiz...that problem occur again...
This is my xorg-vesa.conf

I'm using VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

My crontabs under root are working fine, but I can't seem to get my user crontabs to work.
When I do a crontab -l -u <user>, I get a listing of the crontab file, but it never is executed.
I've been reading about cron.allow and cron.deny, but I can't find those in the slackware distro. Is there something special that I need to do to allow user crontabs in Slackware? (version 13.1 if that helps)

My home computer is (of course) a multi-user system with my wife and I each having separate non-root accounts. Usually at the end of the day I exit X, drop down to the terminal, su to root and type
Code:
shutdown -h now
to turn the computer off for the night.
However, my wife doesn't know (or care to know) the root password, but she would like to be able to shutdown the computer.I tried making a /etc/shutdown.allow file, and typing
Code:
/sbin/shutdown -a -h now from her account, but it didn't work. I got an error that one has to be root to do that.
So, how do I allow regular users to shutdown?

I'm reading the 3rd official handbook in beta version and I learn that the automated tool "slackpkg" exists only since Slackware 12.1.Before that, how did users install new packages and their libraries ? Did they search each package with their web browsers and then install manually? For me, it seems tedious because I usually work with distributions like Fedora, Debian which use an online package management. Is there another way to download it from console and without web browser?
