My crontabs under root are working fine, but I can't seem to get my user crontabs to work.
When I do a crontab -l -u <user>, I get a listing of the crontab file, but it never is executed.
I've been reading about cron.allow and cron.deny, but I can't find those in the slackware distro. Is there something special that I need to do to allow user crontabs in Slackware? (version 13.1 if that helps)
there are at least a dozen users who have a crontab with stuff running. Is there a way to look at all the crontabs at once? right now i just keep doing a su to whichever user, then do a crontab -l.but i need to check what looks like 100 more users, and hoping there's a way to save me from manually having to do this for every single one of them.
I can only start my Internet connection from the root bash. If i type pppoe-start/pppoe-stop in my user's shell it just says "command not found". Any way to permit the users to bring the ppp connection up and down ?
I have installed compiz in slakcware 13.1 32 bit. i enable compiz in KDE + emerald (until this step, i didn't encounter a problem). But after i want to enable compiz in same PC and same OS but different username, the window decoration show same problem, it's missing !
That problem occur when i use KDE (it's same window manager that i use to install compiz in the first user). but if the second user use XFCE and i enable compiz + emerald, it's weird...it didn't show any problem...it's perfect.
But the problem is, if the second user want to use KDE desktop and enable compiz...that problem occur again...
My home computer is (of course) a multi-user system with my wife and I each having separate non-root accounts. Usually at the end of the day I exit X, drop down to the terminal, su to root and type
Code: shutdown -h now to turn the computer off for the night.
However, my wife doesn't know (or care to know) the root password, but she would like to be able to shutdown the computer.I tried making a /etc/shutdown.allow file, and typing
Code: /sbin/shutdown -a -h now from her account, but it didn't work. I got an error that one has to be root to do that.
I am wanting to startup some programs when I first login with a certain user, but I don't like using KDEs builtin autorun system as I have to go through menuust to edit my programs. Is there not a rc.local for each home directory
I'm using Slackware with NFS share and I've been wondering why I had problems with access to some folders and I finally figured out that NFS limits group membership only to 16. Is there a simple way to circumvent this in Slackware?
I'm reading the 3rd official handbook in beta version and I learn that the automated tool "slackpkg" exists only since Slackware 12.1.Before that, how did users install new packages and their libraries ? Did they search each package with their web browsers and then install manually? For me, it seems tedious because I usually work with distributions like Fedora, Debian which use an online package management. Is there another way to download it from console and without web browser?
I have followed the instructions at http://www.vcn.bc.ca/~dugan/setting-up-slackware.html (under "Making Firefox Perfect"), but I still get the error message"Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (rtsp) isn't associated with any program."
Kuser no longer works for 'rob' but still works for 'robert' & 'root'. It launches (i.e. the cursor bounces up & down and a Kuser box appears in the task bar) but the Kuser screen never opens. Finally, the bouncing cursor disappears as well as the Kuser box in the task bar.
I recently ordered the Alienware Aurora from Dell and upgraded the video card to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 as I noticed that Nvidia offers a 32-bit driver for download.
Then I noticed that the system comes with Windows 7 64-bit so I am assuming that this is a 64-bit system.
My bottom line question is will I have to install Slackware 13 (64 bit) or will I have to stick with the 32-bit version since the Nvidia driver is compiled for 32-bit? This is a gaming machine so obviously I want to be able to realize the full potential of the video card.
If I have a choice, what are the pros and cons? I DO NOT want Windows so I'll be disappointed if I can't install Linux!
I do have trouble in configuring my wireless network, though i configured it as what Alien BOB say(http://alien.slackbook.org/dokuwiki/...ckware:network) and google some similar Threads. My latop is Asus F83vf, wireless card is Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter. The code when I run lspci command is code...
I'm trying to get samba working on a debian/xebian box to use as a fileserver. I have a HTPC which is win 7 and a laptop which is OS X. I've installed SWAT and Samba to manage the whole settings. I'm trying to get it setup so that there's a user which has access to my ~/ and a guest user which just has read access to ~/Media/ so that the Media centre can read all the files from it without having to login.
The problem is when I have map to guest set as NEVER I can access the samba ~/ and I'm asked for a username and password which I login with fine and can access the files on both share ~/ and ~/Media. However when I set the map to guest to bad user or bad password I can access the share for ~/Media. But when I try and access the share ~/ I don't get any login box and I immediately get the error "Can't access share permission denied" or an error along those lines.
Here's my /etc/samba/smb.conf # Samba config file created using SWAT # from 192.168.1.65 (192.168.1.65) # Date: 2010/07/10 20:39:16
# Global parameters [global] workgroup = MS_HOME server string = %h server (Samba %v) obey pam restrictions = Yes passdb backend = tdbsam, guest passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u passwd chat = *EntersnewsUNIXspassword:* %n .....
How to get it working so I can have a guest share for my HTPC and a logged in user for my private files?
i have installed Salix 13.1 LXDE version (Salix 13.1 is compatible with Slackware 13.1). I must use various external hard disks formatted with NTFS. The hard disks are automatically recognized and mounted with PCmanFM file manager, but only user root can write on them. How can I allow normal users to write on automounted external ntfs drives?
How can I configure a single computer to work for multiple simultaneous users? I would like to have multiple keyboards and monitors on a single PC ... Is it possible? This set up I'm planning for CyberCafe, For cyberCafe business ROI is very slow... so was planning to have something like this....
-single CPU (Which would act as a server) -Multiple monitors, keyboards, Headphones etc....
If this works out then I would save a lot on my investments (OS cost, Hardware devices, electricity etc)
I recently was able to network 2 computers at home and I wanted to make my password more secure. When I try to edit my password via System>Administration>Users and Groups, it doesn't workI am able to edit my user settings. When I change my password I enter my old one and it accepts my new one. Problem is when I try to install programs, login and do other things it only accepts my old password. How can I change my password?

I know, I know, this discussion this question is not asked for the first time but it doesn't work. I even reinstalled my Slackware on my netbook. lilo.conf: append="vt.default_utf8=1" /etc/profile.d/lang.sh: LANG=de_DE.utf8 (is shown in the output of locale -a) I did not put my configs in my home folder; everything is new cerated. Now, when I create a file
Samba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password. What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.
Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?
Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.
