Slackware :: How To Install VMware Server 2.0 On 13

Jan 1, 2010

I make no claims to be an expert. I am however a long time Slackware user, and have noticed a few posts concerning the ins and outs of previous how-to's on the same subject that are now outdated.

Keep in mind I take no responsibility for any damages to data, hardware, time, or liquor cabinets. Use at your own risk! So..

How to Install VMware Server on Slackware host

This is assuming you have a fresh full install of Slackware 13, I will be doing this install on a 64bit os, but the steps are relative and will also work on a 32.

STEP ONE- You are going to need pam to successfully authenticate on the web interface later, so take care of that first. There are a few different ways to go about this especially if you are on a 32bit install.

32BIT - You may go ahead and download the Linux-PAM package from a slacky repository.

[url]

OR - Of course you could build linux-pam from source, but I would recommend using src2pkg as it is easy, and outputs a tgz that you may install with installpkg. As I dont want to ramble forever Src2Pkg is the home to get it if you do not already have it. Once it is installed.....

cd /usr/src

Code:

These switches will delete the temporary files used during the creation of our package, and drop its output into our current directory.

Code:

Once that is done (as we wont really be using this file right now.) mv /etc/pam.d /etc/pam.ds

But we do need a pam.d directory for Vmware mkdir /etc/pam.d

We are now ready to install Vmware Server

STEP TWO- If you have not done so already, it is time to download the vmware archive. This requires signing up on their website, and it will provide you keys after email activation.

Now that we have the file, extract it

Code:

As slackware now contains an /etc/rc.d/init.d, vmware's installer will detect all the correct directories to drop files into. That includes autostart on reboot. Default's should be fine for everything in the main installer.

-PAUSE AT THE "run vmware-config.pl now?"

It is important to note, that if you are using 64 bit you will need to use a patch to fix a couple of modules. So when you get to the part where it asks to run vmware-config.pl now? Tell it "no" if you are 64bit. Yes should work for 32bit fine, and continue to creating virtual network devices, and input of serial number.

32Bit users, your adventure should be over. At this point you should be able to open a browser, point it at the machines lan ip address, external ip address, or localhost on port 8222. If you have problems and you did not run networkconfig during slackware setup, run it now, reboot and you should be fine. Sometimes fine tuning of /etc/hosts is needed depending on your network situation. 64Bit ... Sorry to say yes, we have to repair something before we can continue

First obtain the patch files from [url] once you have them, in the same directory they are located (even /usr/src is fine)

Code:

After this has finished patching, you may run vmware-config.pl to continue your installation.

Code:

If you have any error's check your /var/log/vmware directory, also make sure your /etc/hosts is valid.

Fedora X86/64bit :: 64-bit Vs 32-bit Virtual Machines Trying To Run 11 On VMware WS 6.5.2

Aug 14, 2009

I have an HP Compaq nx6125 laptop, which has an AMD Turion 64 2200MHz processor, running Windows 7 Ultimate. I have installed the VMware Workstation 6.5.2 [full] trial and am attempting to install Fedora 11 on a virtual machine.

I understand that the Turion processor is a 64 bit processor, so I downloaded the Fedora 11 x86_64 DVD iso image.

First I have to create a VMware virtual machine (VM) and choose a version for it. If I choose a version that is any of the 64 bit options (for example, "Other Linux 2.6.x kernel 64-bit", since there are specific options for RHEL but not for Fedora), I get an error message the moment I try to power on the VM and start the install, saying "The buslogic SCSI adapter is not supported for 64-bit guests in this release [...]". Then the VM just shuts down.

I guess this laptop does have a SCSI bus, but my disks are IDE and as far as I can see (System Information) the SCSI bus is not used (?).

On the other hand, if the VM I create is any of the 32-bit option versions, I get what seems to be just a warning, saying that I'm running a 64-bit guest OS (Fedora 11) on a virtual machine configured to run a 32-bit OS, and suggesting I change this to ensure the 64-bit guest OS will function correctly. What would be the risks / downsides of forcing the install anyways?

I will also ask for help on the VMware side, too, and it's not my intention to turn this into a VMware discussion, but I'm just wondering if anybody on the forum has worked with this combination (VMware 6.5.2 and Fedora 11 running within it, preferrable on an HP Compaq 6125 running Windows 7 Ultimate) ? If so, I'd really appreciate some feedback / pointers.

I used to work a lot with Linux back in the days of RH5.2, and it's been a while, plus I'm new to the virtual machine world, so bear with me here.

Slackware :: Install Slack 13 64bit (GPT And Fdisk) / Command To Use With Parted To Mark The Partition As 82?

Dec 28, 2009

After trying without success change from windows to ubuntu (dual-boot unsolved problems), I decided to try slack as I have seen that user to user support for slack is usually best oriented and faster. But I am having some problems in order to install slack because of GPT support. As I know its a bad idea to start to asking for help without speak what I have tried, lets to this first:

At first I tried just to boot from DVD and went through the install using the help inside the disk. It doesn't work because either fdisk and cfdisk that are suggested in help doesn't offer support to GPT.

After that first try i looked to:url

But also it suggest the use of fdisk. However, it suggested too that I could use another partition application and since I have the live cd for ubuntu, I tried to partition from there and use those partitions for installation.

At first I tried to format as ext4, but i discovered that slack still dont offer support to this format (at least the version that I downloaded). So I tried again but this time using ext3 as format to my / and /home and use the swap offered in the application for use as swap (duh!)But every time I try to install using the dvd it doesnt find my partitions with fdisk, only with the parted command I can see my partition table displayed correctly. However, every time I try to run setup it say that it didnt found and linux partition (swap also when i try to target). So this is my dilemma, I cant use fdisk, in the parted manual (url) it only says that it supports ext2 (not mention ext3) and also i dont find any command to use with parted to mark the partition as 82.I ran through this 2 other posts (url), but as I am still waiting for some update there I decided to ask it here hoping to discover that this is an easy problem.

Did I install something wrong, or does Slackware KDE come with nothing in it?
