Server :: Printing Not Working After Upgrading Samba?

Jun 6, 2010

I have a client who was using samba 3.0.21a, and there was a single printer being served, well as as quite a few shares. I recently upgraded to samba 3.3.4, and they have reported back that the printer is no longer working. Everything else is OK.

Does anybody know off the top of their head what has changed that would cause it to stop working?

Here is the relevant portion of the config:

Code:
server string = Printers
workgroup = XXX
security = user
smb passwd file = /usr/local/samba/private/smbpasswd

Ubuntu :: SAMBA Not Working Properly - No Printing Or Sharing

Jun 24, 2010

I'm having great trouble networking my computers

[Code]...

2 are ubuntu, 2 are XP. ubuntu machine 1 has printers. I managed to print a document from ubuntu machine 2 to ubuntu machine 1 via the network; however ubuntu machine 1's shared docs dont show up on any of the PCs. I am unable to see ubuntu machine 1 on any of the windows pcs, cant find the printers or any sign of the PC actually being there, but pinging the PC is no problem. Basically network printing from ubuntu 2 to ubuntu 1 works fine; but ubuntu 2 cant see ubuntu 1s shareddocs and vice versa. The windows PCs don't seem to even know that the ubuntu PCs exist. no printing or sharing

Server :: Ubuntu 10.10 Samba 3.3 And Windows 98 DOS Printing Works?

Apr 4, 2011

a customer is running an old DOS application to run their business using windows 98/XP workstations that run the DOS app. I configured a Redhat 7.1 samba server (with fault tolerant backup server) for them back in the early 2000s & its version of Samba 2.2, I eventually made it work with all of their systems for printing & secure file sharing ("secure" for them anyway). Fast forward to 2011 & they would like to replace the aging Redhat servers with Ubuntu 10.10. So I set that up & got the following components working with the default install + patches of Ubuntu (using apt-get install samba): Windows XP: 1.) Password protected share access. 2.) Can browse Samba from Network Neighborhood.

3.) Print from XP Windows to HP network printer through Samba. 4.) Print from XP DOS terminal to HP network printer through Samba. XP is pretty much ready to go. Now, Windows 98: 1.) Password protected share access. 2.) Can browse Samba from Network Neighborhood. (this was tough!). 3.) Print from XP Windows to HP network printer through Samba. Note: CANNOT Print from Windows 98 DOS terminal to HP network printer through Samba! When I setup the LPT1 from net use on DOS to point to the Samba share, I then test by running DOS Edit, typing test, & then File->Print. It states that it can't print to LPT1 and asks to Retry, Cancel or Exit. No errors are given on the Samba side & Windows 98 doesn't seem to have an Event Viewer to tell me what's wrong. The whole thing works with Redhat 7.1 Samba though. Good old Samba 2.2. SIGH. So what I did was use my VMware Workstation & built an Ubuntu 10.10 workstation with Samba, built an XP workstation & Windows 98 vm image. I didn't have network printing, so I setup CUPS-PDF to print to PDF files in Samba. As with the "production" installs of their business, I got everything working just fine except DOS LPT1 on Windows 98. So I can get the same error in a test environment basically & it's still puzzling....

CentOS 5 Server :: Cups & Samba -- Printing From WINXP Client As Postscript Fails?

Mar 14, 2009

Apologies if this was asked before -- I have googled the last bytes out of my Firefox but fail to find anything helpful. Here's my problem:I have a foomatic hpijs cups-driver for a HP Inkjet (Non-PS printer) installed. Printing from UNIX-hosts works. I have cups configured not to allow raw-printing (/etc/cups/mime.types: #application/octet-stream, /etc/cups/mime.convs: #application/octet-stream).I have now installed samba-printing, the cups PS-drivers plus the Windows PS-drivers are populated to /etc/samba/drivers/W32X86/ and get pushed to the WIN-Client.Problem is that when I print from a WINXP client, the printer outputs heaps of Postscript-text instead of my page.I have tried to debug this a bit but fail to find anything really useful. My observations so far:

- The samba-pushed HP_Photosmart_3300.ppd (in both /etc/samba/drivers/... and in the resulting dir on the WINXP client) reads:
*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 foomatic-rip"

Fedora Networking :: Samba Server Not Working On F13?

Jun 20, 2010

I can't get the samba server to work on a Fedora 13 system. First of all, I've activated the "smb" service. After this, since I couldn't find any samba configuration tool in Gnome, I switched to KDE and launched Menu - Computer - System Settings - Advanced - Samba. I typed in my workgroup and netbios name and added a share (2nd tab). Then I added my user name to the blank list "samba users" (4th tab), which wasn't very effective, because this list is blank again when I leave (OK) and reopen this config tool.

From a windows machine, I can't access this Fedora system. Netbios doesn't work (ping netbios name - ...could not find name...) and trying \IP in the explorer shows an error message "Windows cannot find...".
Btw firewall and Selinux are both deactivated.

When I open Dolphin on the Fedora locally and type "smb://localhost" it *does* show a logn window, but no matter what I type in there, it just shows this login windows again after clicking OK.

OpenSUSE Network :: Win 7 Working With Samba 3.2 Server As PDC?

Mar 24, 2010

He has a Samba 3.2 server on openSUSE 11.1. It worked fine with XP and Vista as a PDC. There are no NT servers on this office LAN. Now he has a W7 computer, and he was not able to sign on. From searching, it seems that an upgrade of Samba and a tweak of the registry are required. He did the upgrade to 3.5 from a supplementary openSUSE repo and restarted the server. But it seems he cannot sign on yet. I don't know if he did the registry tweak, I'm waiting to hear back.

The MS article: Windows 7 and Samba 3 interoperability
My question is: He seems to be under the impression that Samba 4 is required to work with W7, but that M$ article seems to contradict him. Has anybody got W7 working with Samba 3 as a PDC like in XP and Vista? I can't find any FAQs about this.

Server :: Samba Credentials Not Working Through Windows 7?

May 2, 2011

I have installed a Samba Server (Ubuntu 10.10 Server) detailed config below. The server is up and running but clients running windows 7 cannot connect as their credentials are not accepted. The pop window for credentials keep coming back up on the clients and no connection is issued. I have tried to change the policies on windows 7 as such:

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Send LM & NTLM responses
Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption

But to no avail. I am in doubt as far as where the issue is coming from. Meaning is it coming from my Samba conf or something in Windows I am not doing right.

However it seems that samba should check windows username=test (as have written in samba-config) and ask an password for different users. And additionally, if samba check the currect user in Windows itself and verify it with Unix user, what for we need write the Windows username in samba config? I don't understand

Ubuntu :: Printing GUI Not Working?

Aug 11, 2011

I am hopping to get some help with a printing application problem. When I go to System>Administration>Printing, I get nothing. I have found several possible solutions, but these did not work for me.

First, from Ubuntu Bugs, following the [URL]... But Bug 210738, file 04/02/2008, doesn't fix my issue. I did getting the following results by running 'system-config-printer' in a terminal:

tim@dell-desktop:~$ system-config-printer
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/system-config-printer.py", line 104, in <module>

[Code]....

but this did not fix it either, At this point I ought to mention that I can print to my existing printers, but I wanted to add a new printer. I have no idea when this problem occurred, maybe when I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.4 LTS (Hardy Heron) to Ubuntu 10.4 LTS, but I can't be sure. To add the printer I followed this link {URL]... and was able to add the new printer.

But, after all is said and done, I think the GUI should just work, especially if we want Ubuntu to be more ubiquitous on the desktop.

Fedora :: K3B Not Working After Upgrading To F14

Mar 4, 2011

Earlier in the week I ran the upgrade to move from Fedora 12 to Fedora 14 on my home workstation. After a bit of fussing I managed to get things working for the most part. The problem I have left is a show stopper for me though. I can't get k3b to work right since the upgrade. I primarily use it to copy video dvds that I've created. The first disk that I tried to copy was a dual layer disk and although it fussed about not being able to umount the disk it was able to copy it ok. Then I tried to copy a single layer dvd and can't seem to get that to work. Right away I noticed that it was reading the disk very slowly.

About a meg a second which is a LOT slower then it used to. It then didn't eject the source disk when asking for a new disk which was it's previous behavior. When I put the blank disk in the write failed immediately with an error about not having permission to write to the device. After a bit of fussing without luck to get past that I decided to try and write the disk while running k3b as root. That got me past the permissions problem but still the write failed immediately. I do need to iron out the permissions issue that currently is forcing me to do this as root but my immediate need is to be able to burn disks again.
