General :: Less Hotkeys Not Working - Printing Keycodes Instead Performing Action
Mar 14, 2011
When I try something like
php -i | less
Less is not responding to hotkeys, but prints them like pressing "q" results in statusline
:q
PageDown
:^[[6~
Pressing ENTER like "executes" the keycode and less perfoems the action. Piping trivial small stuff work however... OS: Fedora 14

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 (all the way from 8.04) and I can't seem to get Tomboys global hotkey bindings to work. In addition to Tomboys own settings, I have been messing with gconf-editor, but had no success there either. All I need is Alt+F11 combination to open the default note and I have no idea where to go next

I have a Logitech g15 keyboard and I cant configure my multimedia keys to work with exaile. I tried the xKeys plugin for exaile but it doesn't work. I even tried setting up this commands in UbuntuTweak but it is not working. While Exaile is running, it can also be controlled via command line arguments. These can be assigned to a keyboard shortcut in your window manager or desktop environment.
exaile -n Play next track
exaile -p Play previous track
exaile -s Stop playback
exaile -a Play currently selected or queued song
exaile -t Pause or resume playback

i first noticed it while running VLC when at least one of my keyboard hotkeys stopped working. I tried reassigning the key and then reinstalling the packages from SPM and it failed (using kow's ppa) then i did a clean uninstall and reinstall from A/R programs, which didnt fix anything. then later i had problems typing in firefox, specifically with the number pad (the hotkey i'm referring to is also part of the number pad) something makes me think it's my keyboard or keyboard driver, i've been keeping up with the updates for Jaunty, including the most recent kernel update.

I have two major issues, and one minor one, after I started using Ubuntu, I tried searching the forum for them, but couldn't find anything relevant to my problems.First issue: Screenshots and the cursor.This is probably a very easily fixed issue, but none-the-less, I can not figure it out.How do I NOT include the cursor in my screenshots on Ubuntu 9.10?What I do is, I press the Prt Scrn button, and my cursor is always there in the image, and I don't want that.Second is pidgin.I love it, but every time I boot it up, my friendly name is reverted back to firefoxfag.I think it has something to do with me using gmail for msn, but I'm not sure...Also, as a last very small issue, the global hotkeys on audacious don't respond unless i open preferences, open settings for global hotkeys, then close down the settings..

I have a script that moves files from one directory to another, based on the numeric date of the file name (i.e., 20091212 would go to the December directory). Now, since this script will be ran at the beginning of the following month (December's files to be tarred and gzipped will be performed the first day of January, and January's in February, etc.), it appears to me that the script will be tricky when it comes time to do the December files in January.
Here's part of the script:
Code:
# Define working directory and target directory.
DIR=/var/log
target=$DIR/month
hostname='uname -n' .....
I can't seem to figure out a way to carry the output of the date command to the next command, and the year for the December files will always be wrong.

switching to Fluxbox. I've already discoveded how to configure menus and hotkeys but still not sure about appearance configuration. In the Fluxbox menu I chose nice-looking style and want to customize it - background color, font, font color, size of the panel (I want it widescreen and make it bigger in height), color of this panel, amount of desktops (2 instead of 4), etc... Where do I customize all this?

Is there an interface whereby a userspace program can retrieve the raw keycodes/scancodes from a keyboard? I'm trying to make something in the way of a piano keyboard, and I need to know when keys are pressed (possibly simultaneously), and when they are released.

despite scorning the average Mac fanboy, I recently acquired a nice Apple USB Keyboard (aluminium model) which I admired for both design and quality. Unfortunately, Linux doesn't seem to like it very much - most importantly, the keyboard constantly keeps on changing keycodes and keymap, an issue I never had before. For instance, most of my bindings to close, maximize etc. lie on the "less" key (which is next to LShift on a German layout), but after every reboot, I have to reassign my bindings because either, it has traded places with "^" on a German layout (or "grave" on a US one), the key next to 1, or it has somehow changed its keycode and isn't recognized as "Less" any more, even though it kept its name.
Furthermore, most of the modifiers and similar keys like to throw a mixer dance, meaning that RAlt is suddenly Enter, Del is RCtrl, and so forth. All modifiers, the arrow keys, the block above them, all numpad non-numerical keys and Enter are involved. There seems to be no pattern or identifiable cause to this, except for when I start VirtualBox by VBoxSDL in fullscreen, it always does that (making me lose track of the Host Key, for instance). Also, after a while, the function keys seemed to be recognised - eject suddenly ejected my CDROM drive instead of executing its defined command, even though I never told it to. IIRC, no update to X preceeded this. As far as I can tell, all of these issues only appear in X, there is no problem on the command line. My system is a HP notebook (whose internal keyboard works a+) running a recently dist-upgraded Linux Sidux with kernel 2.6.32-1-slh.sidux and a fully upgraded X server with e17.
My keyboard definition with HAL is as follows:
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbRules" type="string">base</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbModel" type="string">pc105</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbLayout" type="string">us,de</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbOptions" type="string">grp:alt_space_toggle,terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp,compose:rwin</merge>
I tried various keyboard models etc. in e17s internal layout manager, but all of them end up completely mashing up my layout.

Does the Xorg driver used for the keyboard determine the keycodes in X11? the ones seen by xev? The reason I ask is xev used to report my F14 key as 183, now it is 192. I think this happened when i switched to evdev from kbd.

I've got an Emprex 3009URF remote control which I'm using to run XBMC and whilst it works fine for the most part there are a couple of things that I can do with a keyboard/mouse that I'm unable to do with the remote, for instance "right clicking" with the mouse that brings up a context menu, that is totally inaccessible from the remote.
Some things I was able to fix by editing .xsessionrc as instructed by another post elsewhere on the tubes, in the format of:
xmodmap -display :0 -e keycode 127 = space
however I don't know how to find the keycode and I don't know how to map that to a right click event.

I am hopping to get some help with a printing application problem. When I go to System>Administration>Printing, I get nothing. I have found several possible solutions, but these did not work for me.
First, from Ubuntu Bugs, following the [URL]... But Bug 210738, file 04/02/2008, doesn't fix my issue. I did getting the following results by running 'system-config-printer' in a terminal:
tim@dell-desktop:~$ system-config-printer
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/system-config-printer.py", line 104, in <module>
[Code]....
but this did not fix it either, At this point I ought to mention that I can print to my existing printers, but I wanted to add a new printer. I have no idea when this problem occurred, maybe when I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.4 LTS (Hardy Heron) to Ubuntu 10.4 LTS, but I can't be sure. To add the printer I followed this link {URL]... and was able to add the new printer.
But, after all is said and done, I think the GUI should just work, especially if we want Ubuntu to be more ubiquitous on the desktop.

I have a server with logs running. People connect to server. This server is running the same application as a failover just in case it stops. I have a doubt that some clients are connecting from different places as the nodeID is changed SO I need to make a script which reads both logs that are called server1.log and server2.log and where it finds a nodeID which does not match in both logs it action with fail2ban
I don't know whether this can be done directly via fail2ban since it is the program which I know that reads between logs but as far as I know it cannot match data with another log
This is an Example:
Code:
Log 1
03:00:08.905 client qwe696s@894b226f7846d9df, running version 2.1
Log 2
03:00:08.905 client qwe696s@894b226f7846d9dd, running version 2.1
Quote:
qwe696s is the username
894b226f7846d9df is the NODEID
AS you can see from the logs nodeid is different

I have security guidelines for my business OS which require me to active screensaver.
Nevertheless, I dislike screensavers because I sometime read a while, but I do not want to go offline from my IM in the meantime.
Anyways, I am looking for a solution. So I though about writing a little shell script (connected with a cronjob), which just moves the mouse every 10 minutes or so.
Unfortunately, I have no clue how to interact with the mouse in a shell script.

server string = Printers
workgroup = XXX
security = user

I'm having great trouble networking my computers
[Code]...
2 are ubuntu, 2 are XP. ubuntu machine 1 has printers. I managed to print a document from ubuntu machine 2 to ubuntu machine 1 via the network; however ubuntu machine 1's shared docs dont show up on any of the PCs. I am unable to see ubuntu machine 1 on any of the windows pcs, cant find the printers or any sign of the PC actually being there, but pinging the PC is no problem. Basically network printing from ubuntu 2 to ubuntu 1 works fine; but ubuntu 2 cant see ubuntu 1s shareddocs and vice versa. The windows PCs don't seem to even know that the ubuntu PCs exist. no printing or sharing

I use the Actions feature of KDE's Klipper utility to run certain commands when I copy something into the clipboard that matches a particular regular expression. Unfortunately, I have to turn on Enable Clipboard Actions and select the command from a menu every time I copy something that I want to run the command on. I'd like to have that command run automatically instead.
You'd think this was possible, as there is an automatic checkbox in the action settings dialog box:
Unfortunately, that appears to do nothing. The documentation included with Klipper does not indicate what that checkbox is supposed to do.
Is it possible to configure Klipper to run a command automatically if the contents of the clipboard matches a regular expression? If not, is there another way to accomplish this?

I want to use a combination that avoids alphabetic/punctuation characters because that way I have a consistent physical position on different layouts. Control_R+Menu fits that requirement and is also located at a very convenient position.This combination used to work in KDE 3.5 for the global kxkb switch action, or any keyboard action for that matter. In KDE 4, trying to assign Menu by pressing the Menu key always activates the keyboard trap widget's context menu, in this case giving me the What's this?How do I work around that problem? Alternatively, do you have a snippet that I can paste into $HOME/.kde/share/config/kglobalshortcutsrc and which works?
