Ubuntu :: Figure Out What Makes OPENWRT Samba Server Different From The Other 100% Working FREENAS And PC-01 Servers?
Jul 22, 2011
[Code]...
I think I can eliminate Media Companion as the problem since all other samba servers work with it.
I want to trouble shoot this but don't even know where to start. How do I figure out what makes OPENWRT samba server different from the other 100% working FREENAS and PC-01 Servers?
How would you go about trouble shooting this?

I'm trying to share a file via Samba on a Ubuntu server that is actually stored on a FreeNAS box. The FreeNAS drives are mounted via NFS and the Samba share contains a symlink to file on the FreeNAS drive.Browsing the Samba share I can see the file and size, but any attempt to read the file fails. It complains about authentication but all credentials across all machines are the same. So, is it possible to share a file this way or is there another way to do this?I know I could create all the profiles on the FreeNAS box but for convenience and ease of maintenance I was hoping to do this via the Ubuntu server

I'm using ubuntu 9.10 x86 server edition and I switched to Ubuntu from Debian. The only problem I have now relates my Samba server. I installed Samba v 3.4.0 and suddently my network connection (eth0) goes down. I have never seen that before. This issue only happens when samba is running.

I am very new to Ubuntu and have been having trouble mounting my FreeNAS drive. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on partition sda2. I wanted to keep FreeNAS completely separate from here, so I used Virtualbox to host FreeNAS as a guest o/s on a second hdd, sdb1 mounted at /media/NAS-Data. I can access the NAS from all computers except my Ubuntu box. I have CIFS/SMB and NFS (among other) services enabled on FreeNAS.
I would like to run a program that needs access my music. I followed many of the "How To's" on the forum, but am not sure if they didn't work or if my setup is different and can't work the way that has been described. My last effort was to mount the file system using NFS, but I get a timed out error.
When I run showmount -e 192.168.0.44, result is /mnt/cNb-NAS-data 192.168.0.0. I've tried many variations to mount, but none have worked. For all I know, again I'm very new to Ubuntu, the file system is already considered mounted (/media/NAS-Data), and I just need to find the correct path to access my data. This is probably obvious, but when I navigate to NAS-Data, it has the Virtualbox NAS.vdi file.
Was hoping someone might be able to either help me get the correct path name or mounting instructions in order to view these files from Ubuntu.

I've been tinkering with both recently to see what can suit my needs as a simple raid1 mirrored backup server. I used FreeNAS for all but minutes before I had a raid1 array running and shares set up through CIFS. Using Ubuntu on my laptop I was able to see them as well. I had some more figuring out to do, as I wanted each share to be blocked off from the other. aka - I didn't want "fred" to be able to access "bob's" share. So then I move on to Openfiler to check it out. I hear it's simpler. It's web interface, while no doubt much slower than FreeNAS, was easy to mingle around. At first glance, I thought I'd like it more.
I began to set up my raid1 array. After realizing the final release I was dealing with had a bug, I found some commands to run in a root shell to fix. Okay, so now we're moving along... raid1 array created. Then I had to create a volume group. Then a volume. Then shares. And I still don't have it running over cifs. I'm curious if FreeNAS by nature is truly simpler to set up raid array's with, or if maybe I'm just totally misunderstanding Openfiler and that be the reason why I'm thinking this.

I upgraded Samba to 3.5.2 to enable Windows 7 to log in to the PDC. ACL was working with the Samba 3.0.28a that came with 8.04LTS. After upgrade I can now log in to the domain with Win 7 but ACL permissions are not working on Win7, XP or anything. They still show on the server but any attempt to change permissions on the workstation fails with "Access is Denied" and only user/group/other permissions are doing anything. Anyone know what changes for the ACL were made between the two versions? I know they're working on switching to VFS modules but setting "vfs objects = acl_xattr"

what is the best way to go for setting up a NAS. It will be used for 2-3 weeks worth of HD Video storage and needs to have a redundant power supply, swappable SATA drives. I'm thinking of using either FreeNAS or OpenFiler as the OS.
We are limited to a small amount of available server hardware in South America. To buy an 8TB HP NAS server costs $11000, quite pricey for us. In Canada I'd just get a couple of Buffalo Terrastations, but that's not an option now.
So I'm thinking of going with an INTEL SR2400 ($550), maybe even two of those for more redundancy. Anyway, I was thinking of using 1TB or 1.5TB drives, but according to other web sources, that's a bad idea with RAID, as it's more prone to hardware errors.

I had a working server 9.04 on my network and I could access shares via Samba and MacFusion from Windows, ubutu and mac boxes. After the upgrade I can not access shares via Samba, I can ssh in it just fine (no change there) also Macfusion mounts the paths just fine.
Anybody had this problem with the upgrade? It must be samba everything else is working (also I can't access any files from my Ubuntu Laptop running 10.10 Desktop edition)
Here is my smb.conf file:

workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu)

I run Samba version 3.4.7 as a Domain server for our company, and recently we reorganized our IP-addresses. And the Samba server also got a new IP-address. (192.168.1.60 -> 192.168.1.22). However, now new computers can not join the domain, and old ones can not connect to it correctly (they get a temp profile).
Windows XP gets a temp profile when connecting, and when trying to join a domain I get this error "A domain controller for the domain HAWAR3 could not be contacted. Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly. If the name is correct click Details for troubleshooting".
When trying to connect Windows2008R2 (already a member) it says:
"There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request."
My guess is that is is some problem with WINS or something.

I've read through these pages [URL] but can't seem to get Samba server working. I am using Gnome and I go to System - Administration - Services
In there I can see smb and nmb. Both are enabled, but both have a status of unknown. I can't seem to start or stop either of them. I can just enable or disable them. I've tried using the gui, as well as command line.
I'd really like to get this going as I'd like to copy files from my XP Pro box to my Linux box (F9). I have WinSCP, but am having permission issues and I can only copy to a folder on my desktop on the Linux box (I'd like to get this fixed too, but that's a different thread at a later time)

I've been running a F10 based Samba Server a few months without trouble. Now, after an update, samba is not working any more. When I try to start it manually, it reports the following error:
[root@hawkeye ~]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start
Starting SMB services: /bin/bash: line 1: 3403 Aborted (core dumped) smbd -D [FAILED]
[root@hawkeye ~]#
I've re/installed all samba packages and configure the smb server again from scratch but the problem was not solved. My samba packages are:
[root@hawkeye samba]# rpm -q --all | grep samba
samba-winbind-3.2.8-0.27.fc10.i386
samba-client-3.2.8-0.27.fc10.i386

This should be a quick one. I'm trying to backup a single directory and it's subdirectories on my Lucid Server to a freenas box across my network. This is what I'm using to do that..
rsync -r -a -v -z * --delete freenas:dSIBackups It almost works perfectly except for one problem. When a file is deleted at the source, this command doesn't seem to delete it on the receiving end. I assumed that the --delete would do that but aparently not. Can anyone think of a reason that this would happen?

I am trying to monitorize an OpenWRT (Backfire 10.03, r23115) router from an Ubuntu server, but I am having some problems. I have installed Nrpe (2.12) on the remote host (OpenWRT), I have executed the program as a deamon (/usr/sbin/nrpe -d) but when I start the NRPE deamon, I don't get anything about NRPE executing netstat -at or ps -ef.I would need to install check_nrpe on OpenWRT to find out if NRPE is working, but I can't find any ipk package with it. Now, once in the monitoring host when I try to reach the remote host from the server:
/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H ip_remote_host
I get: Connection refused by host
Even, trying with localhost:
/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H localhost
I get the same error: Connection refused by host
I have installed Nagios Plugins and the check_nrpe plugin. I have edited the /etc/nrpe.cfg file:
allowed_hosts=127.0.0.1 ip_server
I don't exactly know if it is remote host's fault, monitoring host's fault or both.

Ok, so I've been researching this like all day because I can't figure out how to get my wireless working on Slackware (and that's the only way I can get internet on my laptop here). So, when I run uname -a it tells me I am running kernel 2.6.29.6 According to http://intellinuxwireless.org/?p=iwlwifi since I have a Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection adapter the iwlwifi driver included with Slackware and the released drivers will not work.
So, I "need to use the compat-wireless project that retrieves the latest driver development code from the upstream repository." Problem #1 - I can't access the repository from Slackware without my wireless. Problem #2 - I have no idea how to get the files I need / configure my system to use them from my other OS (I am triple-booting Windows 7, Linux Mint, and Slackware). So, I THINK once I get the driver installed for my wireless it should be easy enough. I've already become pretty familiar with rc.inet1.conf from trying to get it to work so far, so if all I need to do after this is mess with that then I should be fine.explain if/how I can get the right driver set up in Slackware? I can access my Slackware partition from my other distro no problem.

I used to have my print server with cups in openSUSE 11.1 and it used to work perfect. I was able to print from both linux machines and windows. But since I Installed openSUSE 11.2, I'm only able to print from linux machines. In windows XP I'am able to find the printer and install the drivers, and everything seems to work, but when I send the print command, it creates an error. I have three XP pcs that were running perfectly, and now neither one of them print, so I know is a problem with the server itself. I have all the samba and cups services activated, and the firewall is set correctly, but can't figure out why it is working with linux machines and not with windows.

I've been working for hours with Samba on Ubuntu Server 9.10 (Samba version 3.4.0), trying to get it setup simply as a fileserver that performs authentication to an NT 4 server (yes, I know, old and out of date). After much struggling, I finally realized that my configuration *was* working when the clients connecting (from XP, and Win2k clients, mostly) were actually joined to the domain (where the PDC is the NT 4 Server) and logged into the domain. For various reasons, many of the Windows clients at this location don't actually log into the domain, even though they have login/passwords that are valid users on the domain and they'll typically have some drives mapped to the PDC.
By the way, I have this working on another Linux box running Samba 3.0.28, so I'm sure it's possible, I'm just lost as to how to do it.I can provide plenty more information if it would help diagnose the situation. Does anyone have an idea of how I can get this to work? I'm sure it's possible, since the exact scenario worked in a recent version of Samba.

Making a Samba Server with LDAP authentication. Will post as I go along. Found these sources, anything/hiccups I should know before jumping in? Figure would follow the official documentation then check the others for comparative errors.
https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/server...ap-server.html
https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/server...amba-ldap.html
http://tuxnetworks.blogspot.com/2010...cid-short.html
Also Do other computers that want access to server also need samba installed (or just client)?
The server is 10.04 and my proposed client is 10.10, does this create problems?
Do I need to use ACL? I see them only in certain places.
Using xfce after Ubuntu install, not sure if this matters.

I can't get the samba server to work on a Fedora 13 system. First of all, I've activated the "smb" service. After this, since I couldn't find any samba configuration tool in Gnome, I switched to KDE and launched Menu - Computer - System Settings - Advanced - Samba. I typed in my workgroup and netbios name and added a share (2nd tab). Then I added my user name to the blank list "samba users" (4th tab), which wasn't very effective, because this list is blank again when I leave (OK) and reopen this config tool.
From a windows machine, I can't access this Fedora system. Netbios doesn't work (ping netbios name - ...could not find name...) and trying \IP in the explorer shows an error message "Windows cannot find...".
Btw firewall and Selinux are both deactivated.
When I open Dolphin on the Fedora locally and type "smb://localhost" it *does* show a logn window, but no matter what I type in there, it just shows this login windows again after clicking OK.

He has a Samba 3.2 server on openSUSE 11.1. It worked fine with XP and Vista as a PDC. There are no NT servers on this office LAN. Now he has a W7 computer, and he was not able to sign on. From searching, it seems that an upgrade of Samba and a tweak of the registry are required. He did the upgrade to 3.5 from a supplementary openSUSE repo and restarted the server. But it seems he cannot sign on yet. I don't know if he did the registry tweak, I'm waiting to hear back.
The MS article: Windows 7 and Samba 3 interoperability
My question is: He seems to be under the impression that Samba 4 is required to work with W7, but that M$ article seems to contradict him. Has anybody got W7 working with Samba 3 as a PDC like in XP and Vista? I can't find any FAQs about this.

Does anybody know off the top of their head what has changed that would cause it to stop working?

I have installed a Samba Server (Ubuntu 10.10 Server) detailed config below. The server is up and running but clients running windows 7 cannot connect as their credentials are not accepted. The pop window for credentials keep coming back up on the clients and no connection is issued. I have tried to change the policies on windows 7 as such:
Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Send LM & NTLM responses
Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption
But to no avail. I am in doubt as far as where the issue is coming from. Meaning is it coming from my Samba conf or something in Windows I am not doing right.
