I'm experimenting with with mail-servers now and I'm trying to configure postfix to send emails from one email(pop3 is gmail) to any email outside the local network. Server is Ubuntu 10.10 with the last updates.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just set up a new email server on Debian Lenny. It's Postfix for MTA and Dovecot for IMAPS server. I use Dovecot for authentication. I have two UNIX users on the system (except root), one was added before the installation of Postfix and Dovecot. I'm not doing any virtual things, just plain UNIX users and one domain on a dynamic IP. The first user, "webadmin" can send and receive emails just fine through the server from my mail client.
Now I just added a new user, "scarleo", and it turns out I'm unable to send and receive emails with this account. If I log in (SSH) with scarleo I can use bash mail to send emails, works fine. scarleo can also receive emails from webadmin and can connect to Dovecot to read emails. However scarleo cannot send or receive to or from anyone outside the server from my mail client. I have restarted both Postfix and Dovecot after adding the user. Do I have to do something else to make this account work like webadmin's?

I have a server with a domain running and im trying to resolve the mail server but i can't see where to start. I use OpenSuse 11.2. Basically, for starting, i want postfix to send incoming emails to a php script or perl. for outgoing emails i guess that i could use php mail function and i will see what else to have. I configured the dns. I do a dig.mydomain.tld MX and i get the following:
mydomain.tld3600INMX0 mail.mydomain.tld
mail.mydomain.tld 3600INAmyNumericalIp
So now my system is receiving MX content but i dont know what to do.

I am would like to configure postfix to send and receive email across Ethernet (just for now). I have two machines with postfix installed both using Ubuntu 10.04 directly connected with an ethernet cable. I have successfully configured a machine to send email to gmail, however i have been unsuccessful in having these machines send email back and forth. I have been interested in setting up a little mail server at home and have just been trying some simple projects with postfix to start with. At this moment i am using ip addresses and am not concerned with using a dns server
machine A: has a fixed ip of 10.137.202.1, hostname = mail.me.com,
machine B: has a fixed ip of 10.137.202.20, hostname = mail.ubuntu.com
in the /etc/hosts file I map each hostname to ip address receptively (not sure if a good idea, but at this point I have been trying everything)
So I will execute from Machine B

I currently get from mail.log timed out while receiving the initial server greeting. I get from mail.err valid hostname or network address required in server description #[10.137.202.1]. Obviously when I run the mail command from cmd user i do not receive anything. I can receive mail from myself if from machine A, I sent an email using the command above. I would just like to send email from machine B and receive it on machine A via direct Ethernet connection. I have been through postfix documentation and have also read the postfix definitive guide and have had no luck.
Here is a recent main.cf as I have tried getting this to work (this is for machine A however, similar for B)

Everything is working correctly except for the fact that on all outgoing emails instead of the mail format being user@mydomain.biz it says user@hostnameofpostfixserver. View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm wondering why we can't received email when our primary DNS went down. We have slave DNS but don't know why we can't receive emails. Internet is working properly. The mail file in /etc/configuration on slave dns are there & the zone file is added. I edited the mail zone file to see if it works & restarted the named service. But still we can't received emails using the slave DNS. Do I need to reboot the server?

It is the strangest thing. I can not receive emails on this server after it has been up for an hour. I noticed that everytime and email is received that a sshd opens but never closes. Causeing a memory issue that I dont know how to fix. Also the mailq grows and grows. Mostly with email stating the recipient and send are both [URL].. also postmaster@mail.jmchd.com shows mail system configuration error. I have to restart the server every 30 minutes so users can get and send emails. This is horrible because for every 5 minutes out of the hour emails are bouncing.i have looked through them but I know not what I am looking at.
PS. I was thrown into the position and have limited knowledge. I am used to a GUI.
I've got a request from one of my company's subsidiaries to block all incoming and outgoing mail for a group of users. I've read up some guides on access.db and I know how to do that, but now they want to allow these users to receive emails from a few select domains, and block the rest. To summarize:
1) Block all incoming and outgoing email to users in team A, except mail from [URL]
2) All other users can receive and send mail from/to any domain.
I've set up both Postfix and Dovecot on my server. I can currently send mail via Outlook to Postfix over Port 587 (rather than Port 25), and receive mail from Dovecot on Outlook. However, the only mails I am able to receive are those originated from within the server itself. If I attempt to send an e-mail to the address my Outlook listens to, the mail will never reach my Outlook. In other words, no one on the Internet is able to send mail to me.
Can someone tell me:
1) If setting Postfix to listen over Port 587 for my Outlook to send mail outwards is preventing me to have Postfix to listen to mails coming from the Internet? Would I have to turn on both Ports 25 and 587 in /etc/postfix/master.cf?
2) I have configured my Postfix to use saslauthd by authenticating those who are on /etc/passwd. This means I can enter my Linux account details into Outlook in order to connect and download messages. However, does this mean other MTA servers on the Internet who doesn't know my account details are unable to authenticate with my Postfix server and send mails to it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am newbie to postfix. I added a new domain to my postfix server in the main.cf under mydestinations variable and the relay_domains file. Also, added this domain to my backend exchange server. When I send a test message from the new domain, my messages from that domain appear to be stuck in the "queue active". What does it mean when you are stuck in this queue? Does this mean that my backend email server (exchange 2003) isn't allowing messages from this new domain OR that the POSTFIX server still needs configuring.

Having an offsite relay (or posting directly to the internet) doesnt help either. (Although using hotmail itself as a relay always works despite logged complaints about unchecked ssl certs) Most dissapointingly the log files for the smtp transations are the same for successfully received emails as for the "lost" emails.
