CentOS 5 Server :: Can't Receive Emails - When Primary DNS Went Down ?
May 11, 2011I'm wondering why we can't received email when our primary DNS went down. We have slave DNS but don't know why we can't receive emails. Internet is working properly. The mail file in /etc/configuration on slave dns are there & the zone file is added. I edited the mail zone file to see if it works & restarted the named service. But still we can't received emails using the slave DNS. Do I need to reboot the server?

Jan 12, 2011It is the strangest thing. I can not receive emails on this server after it has been up for an hour. I noticed that everytime and email is received that a sshd opens but never closes. Causeing a memory issue that I dont know how to fix. Also the mailq grows and grows. Mostly with email stating the recipient and send are both [URL].. also postmaster@mail.jmchd.com shows mail system configuration error. I have to restart the server every 30 minutes so users can get and send emails. This is horrible because for every 5 minutes out of the hour emails are bouncing.i have looked through them but I know not what I am looking at.
PS. I was thrown into the position and have limited knowledge. I am used to a GUI.

May 4, 2010I've got a request from one of my company's subsidiaries to block all incoming and outgoing mail for a group of users. I've read up some guides on access.db and I know how to do that, but now they want to allow these users to receive emails from a few select domains, and block the rest. To summarize:
1) Block all incoming and outgoing email to users in team A, except mail from [URL]
2) All other users can receive and send mail from/to any domain.

Feb 8, 2011I'm stuck with postfix. It cannot send emails and I cannot find out why! smtpPort 25/tcp is open. I can telnet localhost with 25, but not the localhosts IP(192.168.1.15). Sendmail is OFF. Here is the main.cf file!

Server :: Postfix To Receive Mail From Internet
Dec 3, 2010I've set up both Postfix and Dovecot on my server. I can currently send mail via Outlook to Postfix over Port 587 (rather than Port 25), and receive mail from Dovecot on Outlook. However, the only mails I am able to receive are those originated from within the server itself. If I attempt to send an e-mail to the address my Outlook listens to, the mail will never reach my Outlook. In other words, no one on the Internet is able to send mail to me.
Can someone tell me:
1) If setting Postfix to listen over Port 587 for my Outlook to send mail outwards is preventing me to have Postfix to listen to mails coming from the Internet? Would I have to turn on both Ports 25 and 587 in /etc/postfix/master.cf?
2) I have configured my Postfix to use saslauthd by authenticating those who are on /etc/passwd. This means I can enter my Linux account details into Outlook in order to connect and download messages. However, does this mean other MTA servers on the Internet who doesn't know my account details are unable to authenticate with my Postfix server and send mails to it?

Apr 20, 2010I am newbie to postfix. I added a new domain to my postfix server in the main.cf under mydestinations variable and the relay_domains file. Also, added this domain to my backend exchange server. When I send a test message from the new domain, my messages from that domain appear to be stuck in the "queue active". What does it mean when you are stuck in this queue? Does this mean that my backend email server (exchange 2003) isn't allowing messages from this new domain OR that the POSTFIX server still needs configuring.

Mar 10, 2011I'm building a replacement postfix email server and I'm getting intermittant loss of sent emails; where: sometimes mail ends up at the recipient (a hotmail address) and sometimes not. Having an offsite relay (or posting directly to the internet) doesnt help either. (Although using hotmail itself as a relay always works despite logged complaints about unchecked ssl certs) Most dissapointingly the log files for the smtp transations are the same for successfully received emails as for the "lost" emails.

Dec 7, 2010I just set up a new email server on Debian Lenny. It's Postfix for MTA and Dovecot for IMAPS server. I use Dovecot for authentication. I have two UNIX users on the system (except root), one was added before the installation of Postfix and Dovecot. I'm not doing any virtual things, just plain UNIX users and one domain on a dynamic IP. The first user, "webadmin" can send and receive emails just fine through the server from my mail client.
Now I just added a new user, "scarleo", and it turns out I'm unable to send and receive emails with this account. If I log in (SSH) with scarleo I can use bash mail to send emails, works fine. scarleo can also receive emails from webadmin and can connect to Dovecot to read emails. However scarleo cannot send or receive to or from anyone outside the server from my mail client. I have restarted both Postfix and Dovecot after adding the user. Do I have to do something else to make this account work like webadmin's?

Server :: Get Postfix To Deliver Valid Emails To Maildir And Relay Remaining?
Jan 20, 2010I got a weird postfix setup question? This is a separate server to the one I posted about earlier today.
I need to setup a postfix server which will accept emails for local know address (full addresses) and deliver them straight to the users maildir.
Any unknown addresses (however for the same domain), needs to be relayed to another server.
This is a bit of a special setup as there is no fixed Internet connection to the server. So the plan is that local email get delivered straight away whilst emails to the same @domain, but that doesn't exist in the user tables get put in the hold queue and is later relayed to server number 2 when a connection is available.
I am using mysql to retrieve all my settings into postfix.

Sep 8, 2010How would one setup a header_check that would discard all emails that have more than 6 words in it? Such as, if there are more than 6 spaces in the entire message it would be deleted? I cannot find this out but it would reduce my spam intake by 50+ a day.

Aug 13, 2010I have a server with a domain running and im trying to resolve the mail server but i can't see where to start. I use OpenSuse 11.2. Basically, for starting, i want postfix to send incoming emails to a php script or perl. for outgoing emails i guess that i could use php mail function and i will see what else to have. I configured the dns. I do a dig.mydomain.tld MX and i get the following:
mydomain.tld3600INMX0 mail.mydomain.tld

So now my system is receiving MX content but i dont know what to do.

Nov 23, 2010Our main DNS resolves to a windows 2008 server box. What I want to do is have a secondary box with Ubuntu to receive sent emails (our@our.com). The problem my brain cannot get around is the DNS resolves to the windows server 2008 box(which host the website as well), how can we allow the email (ours@ours.com) to go to the Ubuntu email server even though the DNS name resolves to the windows server? We need the Windows Server but just Don't want it hosting our mail.

Apr 27, 2010I tried searching the posts and have come up empty handed. I need to find an email I sent to myself (actually a forward of several other emails) that did not get delivered. Otherwise I need the original emails themselves. I have been using pop with dovecot on my ubuntu server Jaunty machine. I searched the mail logs and found that the reason the message might not have been delivered could be because my permissions were not set to administrator for that user. I changed the permissions and still nothing came back.
I deleted the client mail account on the machine I used that had the messages but I was hoping they might still be somewhere on the server. Any ideas?

Jan 18, 2010i'm not a techie but have tried my best to solve the issue without success. I have a static IP from local ISP and my computer is configured with 192.168.1.2 (LAN IP).
I have installed ubuntu server 9.04 and want to send emails from my server for which I've configured postfix. But I dont know what to do next.
My questions are:
1. Do i need to install DNS server for using postfix? If not, what should I install to send emails from this server?
2. Do I need to forward any particular port in my router?
