Software :: Postfix Server Rejecting Emails Sent From Outside Host
Jul 29, 2011
I've recently followed a guide I found online [1] and installed Postfix and Courier on my server machine. I can send emails from the server to any email address but unfortunately I can only receive emails sent from the server - it's only accepting emails sent locally from the host.

I've enabled popb4smtp in my mail server. Is this because of the IP 117.58.246.10 don't have a dns record? How can I sending email from this type of Ip which don't have dns entry?. But if I enable SMTP auth I can send email form this same ip. Another thing is I can connect to port 587 from the email client to send email but can't connect to port 25.

I have enforced to use the Linux /etc/passwd file to authenticate myself from Outlook, Postfix will accept mail from any IPs. However, I'm not able to send mails from my Outlook via my mail server to someone else on the Internet. Am seeing the following in Postfix's log.
Code:

I have an ubuntu server running postfix 2.6.5 (configured using DTC). If a user tries to send an email to more than one recipient, and one recipient address is bad, then the server returns an error and no mail is sent (even to the good addresses), rather than letting the good ones through. Error displayed by thunderbird is
Code:
"An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 5.1.1 [URL]: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual mailbox table. Please check the message recipient noreply@domain.com.au and try again." and mail.log shows ...

I have this strange error - I switched from postfix 2.6.5 to 2.8.2 and I some mailservers cannot send mail to me. One of them was some sendmail server. I have virtual alias maps in mysql. It works fine for almost all server that are sending mail to me, but some of them seems to send mails as user@FQDN instead of user@virtualdomain my machine name is x49.tvujweb.cz, and mz email is kamil.horky@servis-it.net but in server logs is that user kamil.horky@x49.tvujweb.cz cannot be found in virtual alias maps.
here is my postconf:
Code:
2bounce_notice_recipient = postmaster
access_map_defer_code = 450
access_map_reject_code = 554

I've got an uber simple test mail script in php on my awesome new dev machine running Ubuntu:
PHP Code:
Unfortunately, something is preventing mail delivery. I can't tell from this error log whether it's the remote machine rejecting me or whether it's my machine rejecting the self-signed cert on the remote machine:
Code:
I'm wondering what I could change in my postfix configuration to remedy this problem.
I tried setting smtp_tls_security_level = may = may but this did not change anything.

This seems like a relatively simple question, but I haven't been able to figure it out from the documentation after a couple of hours of searching. I'm running postfix on my mail server, and the vast majority of my spam has the sender address spoofed to match the recipient address. I've got spamassassin up and running, and very little gets through that, so it's not a serious problem, but if possible I would like to be able to reject the mail before it arrives to reduce the system load.
Mail is sent locally via webmail, relaying is denied, so the only way that mail should be sent from the domain is via a connection from localhost. The basic idea I'm thinking of is if the MAIL FROM sender claims to be an address at the receiving domain, but is connected from a remote IP, the mail should be rejected.

I'm stuck with postfix. It cannot send emails and I cannot find out why! smtpPort 25/tcp is open. I can telnet localhost with 25, but not the localhosts IP(192.168.1.15). Sendmail is OFF. Here is the main.cf file!
# See /usr/share/postfix/main.cf.dist for a commented, more complete version

I am newbie to postfix. I added a new domain to my postfix server in the main.cf under mydestinations variable and the relay_domains file. Also, added this domain to my backend exchange server. When I send a test message from the new domain, my messages from that domain appear to be stuck in the "queue active". What does it mean when you are stuck in this queue? Does this mean that my backend email server (exchange 2003) isn't allowing messages from this new domain OR that the POSTFIX server still needs configuring.

One of our postfix servers is for sending/receiving internal emails only. When a user entered a wrong recipient address, it will take almost an hour for the user to get the "Recipient address rejected" email. What can be done to let the user get the "Recipient address rejected" email quickier.

I'm building a replacement postfix email server and I'm getting intermittant loss of sent emails; where: sometimes mail ends up at the recipient (a hotmail address) and sometimes not. Having an offsite relay (or posting directly to the internet) doesnt help either. (Although using hotmail itself as a relay always works despite logged complaints about unchecked ssl certs) Most dissapointingly the log files for the smtp transations are the same for successfully received emails as for the "lost" emails.

There is a mail server formed by debian4 + postfix 2.3.8 . Some messages aren't received or take too loong to be received. Here is a example or error in mail.log:

I've been looking for a way to filter out emails on my postfix server by GeoIP data. I couldn't find anything that fitted the bill so wrote my own in Python as a postfix policy. Thought I'd post it here to see if it's of any use to anyone else. I've attached a tar of the files as the Python formatting will get mucked up by the forum code. Comments/improvements are welcome (be kind ) First file is : policyd-geoip which is owned by root:root and placed in /usr/bin with 755 perms

I got a weird postfix setup question? This is a separate server to the one I posted about earlier today.
I need to setup a postfix server which will accept emails for local know address (full addresses) and deliver them straight to the users maildir.
Any unknown addresses (however for the same domain), needs to be relayed to another server.
This is a bit of a special setup as there is no fixed Internet connection to the server. So the plan is that local email get delivered straight away whilst emails to the same @domain, but that doesn't exist in the user tables get put in the hold queue and is later relayed to server number 2 when a connection is available.
I am using mysql to retrieve all my settings into postfix.

How would one setup a header_check that would discard all emails that have more than 6 words in it? Such as, if there are more than 6 spaces in the entire message it would be deleted? I cannot find this out but it would reduce my spam intake by 50+ a day.

I recently set up a machine with Ubuntu 10.4 LTS to help to replace an aging VAX mailserver that was the DMZ mailserver for the company I work for. I set up a default install of postfix (via apt-get) to function as a DMZ border device that routes between two internal mailservers based on subdomain aliasing via internal DNS.
The problem is that although I have installed no anti-spam or anti-virus options, mail sent to this machine from any outside source containing a password-protected zip file is being rejected with error:
552 Password protected zip file found inside of the email
At first I'd thought that possibly it was the sending mailserver issuing this error, but after further testing I found that no matter the source, any password protected zip file is immediately rejected. Being as we're in a HIPAA-sensitive environment, this has been relied upon as a backup for people to do one time encrypted file sends via email. The file in question is relatively small, and I do not have any quotas on, and the same test file sent two ways (one encrypted zip and one non-encrypted zip) caused the encrypted zip only to fail.
As stated before, I do not use any type of antivirus or antispam measures, no header or body checks have been put in place, and in the course of trying to troubleshoot this problem, have probably opened my server up more than is strictly wise. I really need to enable this feature as being unable to take encrypted zips puts the entire migration at risk.

I've read many post close to my subject regarding blacklisting incoming emails, but non of them described what I really want:How can I reject a continuously changing email from my postfix, here is what I mean:
abduooo+bncCIr7stnbBBCssufsBBoEzTHSKg@googlegroups.com
abduooo+bncCMfZgc-iExCKr-fsBBoEMzorbA@googlegroups.com
abduooo+bncCLf5kv6MHRCtmefsBBoEjYnAAQ@googlegroups.com
I think you got what I mean, the thing I've taken from the posts I've read is that I created a sender_access file hashed it and added the:smtpd_recipient_restrictions = check_sender_access hash:/etc/postfix/sender_accessto postfix main.cf configurationThe sender access file reads:abduooo*@googlegroups.com REJECTBut that didn't work, I know that there is some magical slashes and dots to be added to the sender_access, but I don't know which.

I have a server with a domain running and im trying to resolve the mail server but i can't see where to start. I use OpenSuse 11.2. Basically, for starting, i want postfix to send incoming emails to a php script or perl. for outgoing emails i guess that i could use php mail function and i will see what else to have. I configured the dns. I do a dig.mydomain.tld MX and i get the following:
mydomain.tld3600INMX0 mail.mydomain.tld
mail.mydomain.tld 3600INAmyNumericalIp
So now my system is receiving MX content but i dont know what to do.

I tried searching the posts and have come up empty handed. I need to find an email I sent to myself (actually a forward of several other emails) that did not get delivered. Otherwise I need the original emails themselves. I have been using pop with dovecot on my ubuntu server Jaunty machine. I searched the mail logs and found that the reason the message might not have been delivered could be because my permissions were not set to administrator for that user. I changed the permissions and still nothing came back.
I deleted the client mail account on the machine I used that had the messages but I was hoping they might still be somewhere on the server. Any ideas?

I have an OpenSuse 11.2 system that is running 2 BBS systems independently, both of which are capable of receiving smtp mail on prot 25. What I would like to do is set up Postfix on the OpenSuse OS to receive all mail for both those domains and then send the relevant mail to the correct BBS. I would therefore have Postfix listening on Port 25 External and the 2 BBS applications listening on different ports on the localhost address. At least that is the plan.
how to do this. I want to do it and still make sure Postfix is secure and not accidentally open up any nasty relay holes etc etc.

i'm not a techie but have tried my best to solve the issue without success. I have a static IP from local ISP and my computer is configured with 192.168.1.2 (LAN IP).
I have installed ubuntu server 9.04 and want to send emails from my server for which I've configured postfix. But I dont know what to do next.
My questions are:
1. Do i need to install DNS server for using postfix? If not, what should I install to send emails from this server?
2. Do I need to forward any particular port in my router?
3. If I dont have a fully qualified domain, what are the configurations I need to do to send emails?

I am trying to find a way to tell postfix to forward all emails from
dbsupport@thisdomain.com
and
helpdesk@thisdomain.com
to
be sent to admins@thatdomain.com, but it is not working. I am trying transport maps. The content of my transport file is:
Quote:
helpdesk@thisdomain.com smtp:admins@thatdomain.com
Quote:
dbsupport@thisdomain.com smtp:admins@thatdomain.com
Both [URL] and [URL] are on box1 as an alias in the /etc/alias file like this:
root: helpdesk@thisdomain.com
root: dbsupport@thisdomain.com
how to get this working?
