Server :: Postfix Is For Sending/receiving Internal Emails Only?
Jan 21, 2010
One of our postfix servers is for sending/receiving internal emails only. When a user entered a wrong recipient address, it will take almost an hour for the user to get the "Recipient address rejected" email. What can be done to let the user get the "Recipient address rejected" email quickier.

I am using the Postfix SMTP server for sending emails. However I just did a default installation and subsequently someone is sending spam using my SMTP server. I would like some help on securing my Postfix server and to block these mischievous emails being sent from my server.

i'm not a techie but have tried my best to solve the issue without success. I have a static IP from local ISP and my computer is configured with 192.168.1.2 (LAN IP).
I have installed ubuntu server 9.04 and want to send emails from my server for which I've configured postfix. But I dont know what to do next.
My questions are:
1. Do i need to install DNS server for using postfix? If not, what should I install to send emails from this server?
2. Do I need to forward any particular port in my router?
3. If I dont have a fully qualified domain, what are the configurations I need to do to send emails?

I have followed the guide for "The Perfect Server - Debian Lenny (Debian 5.0) With BIND & Dovecot [ISPConfig 3]" and all is well, except.
I can send mail (to GMail) from commandline. I can send mail (to GMail) from any of the domains configured in ISPConfig3 through SquirrelMail (how ever terrible that looks, but functions) or IMAP/POP.
but....
I can't receive mail (from GMail) on any of the domains configured in ISPConfig3 in SquirrelMail or IMAP/POP.
I have my domains configured with proper MX records (just like I have them configured at work). I have all ports (80, 143, 110, 25, 22, etc) forwarded on my router that are needed.
I can Telnet to localhost and all checks are fine. I can send and receive from and to local domains on the same server, which makes sense. but
I can't Telnet from any external server to my server behind NAT.
Conclusion:
I figured it MUST be a network/port-forwarding problem as the external Telnet requests fails to my machine on port 25.
Tested my router if it would let met communicate through port 25 and it would.
So it must be my ISP, as I read in different posts.
Question:
Maybe I'm a n00b, but in all other posts the problems were with receiving AND sending.
My ISP responded that port 25 is blocked because of spam issues.
But I can mail (and even spam if I would like to) to external domains while I didn't do anything weird to make that happen.
The only thing I wish for is to receive mails and if you'd ask me, port 25 would be solely for outgoing mails, not for incoming mail deliveries throught MX?
An ISP surely wouldn't disable their customers in having a mail-server for incoming mails, as long as they would send out through their own smtp server to make sure they wouldn't spam the world?

I have configured postfix to send/receive mail from/to for two domains we manage. [URL] and [URL] Most of the cases there is no issue sending out or receiving emails. However, a few users of domainY.com complained that their senders were not able to sent them email. after much investigation, we started thinking that the mailserver failed to send us email may the failing on doing a SMTP Banner issue.
Is there anyone who knows how to deal with this SMTP banner issue with multiple domain. We want different SMTP banner when doing EHLO on different server.

I have wordpress installed on my VPS, which is running 10.04.1 LTS. I appear to be having an issue whereby the server isn't sending out emails to new users, nor to myself when I get comments on the blog.I'm at a dead end for where to look next, because the settings are exactly the same as they were with my previous VPS (and they were always pretty generic), but yet it doesn't work.

I just got control over a server that was hacked several months back. The other day we started receiving rejected emails sent from my server to a yahoo email address that is no longer active that contained users login information. I am trying to find the process that is sending these emails. So far its been like finding a needle in a haystack. The email that is being sent is appending the login information each time it is sent so there must be a local file that contains this information. I have tried using grep and find without any luck.

I have a 64bit linux server with 5 virtual hosts on it. When someone fills out a contact form on one of the sites...I get 15-20 copies of the same email. At first I thought it was the kids clicking send multiple times because the first emails were coming from the children's ministry "Email The Cast" section. But then I started getting multiples from the adult sites too. All contact forms are set to come to me.
What's stranger is that my registration section for one of the sites uses the SAME php script (different file) to email me a notification that someone has registered but I only get 1 copy of that.

I'm stuck with postfix. It cannot send emails and I cannot find out why! smtpPort 25/tcp is open. I can telnet localhost with 25, but not the localhosts IP(192.168.1.15). Sendmail is OFF. Here is the main.cf file!
# See /usr/share/postfix/main.cf.dist for a commented, more complete version

I am newbie to postfix. I added a new domain to my postfix server in the main.cf under mydestinations variable and the relay_domains file. Also, added this domain to my backend exchange server. When I send a test message from the new domain, my messages from that domain appear to be stuck in the "queue active". What does it mean when you are stuck in this queue? Does this mean that my backend email server (exchange 2003) isn't allowing messages from this new domain OR that the POSTFIX server still needs configuring.

I'm building a replacement postfix email server and I'm getting intermittant loss of sent emails; where: sometimes mail ends up at the recipient (a hotmail address) and sometimes not. Having an offsite relay (or posting directly to the internet) doesnt help either. (Although using hotmail itself as a relay always works despite logged complaints about unchecked ssl certs) Most dissapointingly the log files for the smtp transations are the same for successfully received emails as for the "lost" emails.

I'd like to have anything that tries to send mail locally on my machine (including crontab reports for instance) to be handled by my ISP's smtp server instead of my machine acting like it's own SMTP server. I've spent around 15 hours trying to figure out how to do this and I keep either getting into things that I don't understand, or hitting brick walls (for instance, I found nullmailer, but after installing it, it seemed like it would only work on Unix) Is there an application like nullmailer which I can use as my MTA to forward all internal mail to a different SMTP?

I am setting up a Postfix MTA that will be only sending mail for 10 different domains. We have other servers that will be receiving the mail for the domains so I only need to set up for sending on Postfix.
What my issue is I am trying to configure Postfix so that when it sends mail the header shows what domain the mail came from and not the domain the Postfix server is set to. For example....
[URL]
When I send mail from domain2.com I want it to show in the header it was sent from domain2.com and not from domain1.com. What do I need to set in postfix so that this happens? Right now no matter what domain the mail is from the header always shows the server domain and I can't have that.

I have postfix sort of working correctly. postfix can send email to the internet but it doesn't want to send email to my local exchange server. What I need is for postfix to send emails directed to @xyz.com to my exchange server instead of itself.
My setup
mail.xyz.com - exchange 2003 server
www.xyz.com - centos 5.3 server with postfix
www.xyz.com can send emails to my hotmail.com account so that part works correctly. www.xyz.com can't send email to username@xyz.com. postfix seems to be delivering the email to itself and not the exchange server.
How can I tell postfix to send the @xyz.com emails to my exchange server?
Here is a sample of my /var/log/maillog
Jul 22 15:43:43 list postfix/smtpd[9802]: D63168604A3: client=localhost.localdomain[127.0.0.1]

I'm running a server with two sites which both need to be able to send emails. Currently I have Postfix set up to send email via Google Apps. This works fine, but Google's servers ignore the From: address I specify and substitute the one I logged in with. Is there a way to make Postfix log into Google Apps with a different username based on what site the email is coming from? The server does not recieve any mail itself; Google recieves it and we have it set to forward it to the appropriate person's real email address. I'm only worried about sending mail.
(Postfix is not a requirement here, so if there's another mailer that can do this better, I'm open to ideas. However, sending email directly from the server isn't an option as it's a residential IP address and blocked by most of the big email providers.)

One of my mailservers running postfix has suddenly stopped sending mail and has been generating the following errors:
Jan 7 12:03:08 postfix/sendmail[3560]: warning: premature end-of-input on /usr/sbin/postdrop -r while reading input attribute name
Jan 7 12:03:08 postfix/sendmail[3560]: fatal: root(0): unable to execute /usr/sbin/postdrop -r: Success
[Code].....
Things I have tried to fix this problem, but didn't work.
1) Stopped postfix, uninstalled and reinstalled.
2) Did a complete filesystem relabel with a touch /.autorelabel and reboot.
3) Did a restorecon -F -R on /etc/postfix, /var/spool/postfix and /usr/sbin/post*
Nothing above has worked and have no idea why with selinux disabled postfix works and with it on it fails.
