CentOS 5 Server :: Super Slow Windows Printer Properties Dialogue With Samba Printer

Sep 18, 2009

I have a Centos 5.3 server with Samba file shares and a shared Samba printer. I am not running a domain.

I recently changed my windows desktop pc from an XP machine to a vista 64 machine... It has a different user name. Everything went pretty smoothly - and the and the vista machine found the smba printer - and even downloaded the driver from the samba server. he printer works OK - and the file shares are fine.

The only thing which is quite odd - is that the Printer Properties dialogue takes more than 30 seconds to come up - and every action you attempt with the dialogue takes a similar amount of time.

I will include below the essence of my smb.conf:

Networking :: Gentoo To Windows Printer Server?

Feb 20, 2010

I'm trying to install a network printer to my Gentoo workstation, but have never used printing in Linux before and am unsure of how to proceed. I'm stuck in the CUPS web interface based printer adding process, at what device and device URI to set. I have looked through the properties and settings of the printer on the server machine, but couldn't find anything relevant. The printer model is Brother HL-1430, and it's attached with USB to the Windows XP powered printer server and shared to the network. Other (Windows) machines in the network can successfully reach the printer.

General :: Windows Can See Ubuntu Server Printer, But Can't Print To It?

Feb 5, 2010

I have an old desktop that I'm trying to set up as a home backup/print server. Backup was trivial, but am having issues getting the printing to work. The printer is connected to the server running Ubuntu Server 9.10 (no gui). If I access the printer via http://hostname:631/printers/, I am able to print a test page, so I know the printer is working; however, I am having no luck from Windows. Windows can see the printer when browsed via hostname, but I am unable to connect. Windows says "Windows cannot connect to the printer" without indicating why.

From /etc/samba/smb.conf:

Server :: Unable To Add Samba 3.5.5 Shared Printer To Windows

Sep 30, 2010

I am sitting with a slight problem sharing some HP network printers (JetDirect) with my windows machines. I have cups 1.4.4 configured on my Debian PDC with samba 3.5.5. The printers in question, is configured in cups and is working perfectly, but for some reason when I try to add the printers from Win7 or Win Vista I get the following error:

"Connect to Printer Windows cannot connect to the printer Operation failed with error 0x00000006"

I had a look around and it seems that the above error code is tied in with incorrect drivers, but the strange thing is that if I create a new local port on the win machines and specify the shared printers they work. The problem then is that cups does not identify the jobs correctly. The job will be named something like "smbprn.00000264 Remote Downlevel Document" instead of the actual document name. One of the reasons for using cups is to be able to monitor printer usage so this option is a temporary solution in my mind. Can the print$ share be causing it although it is empty and no drivers has been uploaded? Neither the samba nor cups logs give me something concrete to work with (hopefully someone else can spot the problem).

Extract from samba log:

Fedora Hardware :: Access Printer Attached To Windows 7 Server

Aug 12, 2010

Want to access a printer attached to a windows 7 server. What I did was the following: 1. Installed samba-common, samba-client & samba-winbind. 2. Included Samba & Samba Client as Trusted Services in the Firewall with system-config-firewall. 3. SELinux is Disabled (in System Default Enforcing Mode). 4. Shared the printer in the Windows 7 server. Other Windows hosts in the LAN can print successfully.

In system-config-printer, I selected Add Printer -> Windows Printer via SAMBA -> Browse... The SMB Browser successfully found the Share and the Host, but won't show the printer. Am I missing something here? The samba wiki mentions that I also need to change some windows registries in this page: [URL].... Do I really need to do this? I don't want to needlessly mess with windows registry

Fedora Installation :: Setup A Cups Printer Server For Windows Machines?

Sep 18, 2010

we are having new printers. At the moment we over 1000 machines on multiple sites but no print server they are manually added on the machine ( I know don't ask).

Anyway there is no way they would let use a windows server so the only option I have is to use linux however I little unsure if it is capable of doing the job I need it to do. Basically I want to add the printers on the linux server either using samba or ipp (I would assume samba would be best).

The reason i want to do this is when we have to do around the machines I just want to go around the machines and just the map the printer and it brings down the driver and config etc as we want them to duplex. The issue is I been trying to gain information on the internet and getting conflicting information apparently I can add the windows driver onto the server so when I map the printer it brings it down. However some guides state you still have through the whole process of adding the printer and then choosing the driver etc. Which kinda of makes it pointless to do the printer server since I would already have to do this anyway if we don't have one.

I just want to go be able to go around the machines and for example click star run and do something like \192.168.1.1printer01 and then it done kind of thing.

General :: Windows User Not Authorized For Printer On Ubuntu Server But File Share Is Ok

Two users on both Ubuntu server and Windows 7. Both users admins on Windows. Used SWAT to set up Samba. Printer is local to Ubuntu server. User A can access both file share and printer on Ubuntu server from Windows. User B can access the file share but can only see the printer, not use it. Have looked everywhere I can think of to find out why one user has access and the other doesn't on both Windows side and Ubuntu side. As far as I can tell, they are set up the same. Can anyone provide some direction on what I should look at to find out what might be preventing User B from being authorized to use the printer on Ubuntu?

Networking :: Samba Shared Printer: Install The Driver In A Windows Host?

Oct 20, 2010

I have found that there are certain things on the web that I need to print, that simply refuse to work under linux. I have a samba printer server on one of my Slackware boxes and an M$ XP vm under Vbox that can access the server and see the printer. The only problem that I have is that it expects to download a driver from the server which isn't available and the HP driver installer won't install if it doesn't detect the printer. Short of relocating the printer to install the driver, does anyone know how to get the driver installed on the XP host? This is so much easier with my Slack boxes and CUPS!

Debian Configuration :: "Windows Printer Via Samba" Option - Add One By Selecting Add->Printer

Aug 11, 2011

I'm using an up-to-date installation of Squeeze with the default Gnome desktop and am trying to print. My knowledge of configuring printers is very limited if it even exists. Since a friend of mine is able to print from her Ubuntu computer, my plan is to copy her. Here's how she does it. She goes under System->Administration->Printing on the desktop. Then a window pops up titled "Printing" that lists various printers that are supposed to exist. It's possible to add one by selecting Add->Printer. It asks for the root password and then a new window pops up titled "New Printer" which has a subwindow called "Select Device" In my case, the "Select Device" window has the following options to choose from:

- AppSocket/HP JetDirect
- Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)
- LPD/LPR Host or Printer

In her case, she has an extra option called "Windows Printer via Samba". This is the option that she uses. The other options don't seem to work for her. I'm assuming that I just need to install some package in order to make this option magically pop up for me. Does anyone know what package this may be? I currently have the packages smbclient, samba-common and samba-common-bin installed..........

Fedora :: Printing Via SMB To Windows 7 Printer?

Dec 8, 2009

I'm running Fedora 11 and printing to both an HP Laser Jet 4Plus and HP Office Jet 7130 via a Windows 7 PC. I have a UID/PWD account on the PC that differs from that on the Fedora, also one that is identical UID/PWD to that used in Fedora. This has worked fine until "recently" (noticed it in ~last week or 2). Suddenly I'm being asked repeatedly to authenticate to print, neither account credentials are working. I get the message "Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED)" and I get nowhere. I tried delete and reinstall the printers in Fedora, that works OK, can "see" them in setup on the Windows 7 host just fine. But can't get past the repeated authentications ...? I'm guessing something has changed in Fedora updates because this used to work with same Windows 7 PC in prior weeks.

Ubuntu :: Sharing A Windows Printer

Oct 8, 2010

after much flaunching around for several days, I was able to access a windows based printer on my network from this Ubuntu 10.4 laptop. What I first discovered was I had to install Samba and Cups (cups was already installed as it turned out). Having done that, I tried several iterations of discovering the HP printer attached to a Dell Latitude on my network. Nothing. Then I read something, somewhere about using the IP address of the Latitude instead of the network name (Latitude). So I peeked into the router to find the IP address assigned to Latitude and VOILA! I plugged that into the box for location, along with the name of the printer and it did the rest. Actually it found the right drivers and did the rest.

I see a problem with that protocol, however. If I reset the router, which I have to do once a week or so, I fear that the IP assigned to Latitude will change. As it is, it has 192.168.2.2 but if I reset and bring up my Asus first, I imagine Latitude will end up with ~.2.3, in which case I have no idea what will happen.

Debian Configuration :: Connecting To A Windows Pc And Using Printer

Oct 17, 2010

I have finally given up trying to get to a printer on my windowsXP pc to work with my linux box and need some assistance. The printer is a hp photosmart c5500 series. My linux box is running lenny and I have installed the cups and samba applications. The linux box is networked to the win pc on a win network using a eth0 link. The link works as I have internet and e-mail connections. I have configured the smb.config file as follows:

[Code].....

I have run the tests in the samba checklist and the connection is apparently working. Pings to the windows pc,, the notebook, and the linux box all return the proper results. The "smbclient -L w.x.y.z" return shows the windows shares that includes the above named printer. When I try to connect the printer using the kde cups wizard or get into the c drive on the windows pc I get the NT_status_access_denied message. I get the same return when I try the "smbclient //username:passwd@wincomputer" I downloaded the appropriate drivers from HP and tried the lpadmin comand and instructions in the Debian mini-Howto but get the return of "lpadmin: No such file or directory" when in fact all the files exist and have correct permissions etc. I have a Ubuntu OS running on a notebook computer (dual boot with windowsXP) with a wireless link to the same router that accesses the printer without a problem. The smb.conf file I am using is based on that I found in my Ubuntu OS but apparently something is different.
