Fedora Networking :: How To Share Printer To Windows
Jun 28, 2010I am trying to share my printer with a windows xp machine.Samber server and configuration tool is installed. Still I have no clue how to get this to work. The printer is setup and working on my Fedora desktop.as anyone done this before and can give a step by step description on how to setup a Linux printer on a network (home-network) with windows.I already searched for it but non of the tutorial were clear enough or missing something.

Feb 23, 2010I have a Windows XP box with an HP5610 connected to a USB port. I have a Dell notebook computer loaded with Ubuntu 9.10. I have the two networked via a wireless connection and can share folders/files between the two with no problem. Unfortunately, I cannot share the Windows printer with the Ubuntu box. I can go through the printer setup with Samba on the notebook and the HP is detected however, whenever I go to verify I get an invalid argument error.
In reading one of the posts it suggested pinging the ubuntu box from the Windows box. Since I already have viable file sharing connection does that come in play at all?

May 19, 2011I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 in dual boot with Windows XP on my computer at work. I have a printer (HP LaserJet 3020) and I've shared it with all my coworkers, and everything's working like a charm. When a coworker wants to print here, first he has to select my shared printer on his computer and then print it. Cool! The point is... On his computer there are two network printers pointing to my PC: one for Windows and another one for Ubuntu. Now, here's the problem. Sometimes I'm logged in Windows, sometimes in Ubuntu, here. But my coworkers don't know when I'm in Windows or Ubuntu. So, if they select my Windows shared printer and I'm logged in Ubuntu, it doesn't work.
So, I'd like to know if there is a way to share my printer on Ubuntu as if it were Windows, I mean, I don't know if it's possible - that's what I want to know - but I thought maybe there could be a way to use a "single network printer link" on my coworkers' computers (instead of two distinct ones for each OS I use), so that they would select it and send their printing job to my printer, independently on which OS I'm using at the moment.
Summarizing... A coworker chooses my shared printer on his computer and send the job. Then it would be printed here anyway. It doesn't matter if I'm logged in Windows or Ubuntu.Is that possible? If so, how?

Then search for a network printer using the IP address of my printer. I get the address back showing the printer that I want. I go through the entire install process find the HP printer and then the driver for the model and get to the last step to install it and get this error

Dec 6, 2010I have shared my cpl-300 from my windows 7 machine to my network, so that may print from my linux laptop to it.
Now whenever I go to system -> Administration -> Printing and try and browse for my printer it asks for a username and password any username or password I enter that is on the windows 7 machine gets rejected.
So I tested to see what would happen if you used smbclient to view the shares available from the windows 7 machine, unfortunately it results in another permission error. The funny thing is I can mount a share using "mount -t cifs".

Aug 30, 2010I'm giving up in ever hoping that I'll get printing working with windows 7 with the strange comments I've found on the net. Basically I have a samsung ML2240 printer shared on the network, everything can print to it fine except for my windows 7 laptop. It's shared via Samba.

General :: Obtaining Windows Printer Share SMB Settings (for Tsclient/rdesktop)?
Aug 22, 2011I have access to a "virtual" Windows server terminal, which I can access through my Ubuntu Linux via tsclient or rdesktop. Additionally, there are printer shares on this network, which can be accessed from any Windows PC on the network (including the "virtual" terminals); lets say the address is [URL]. Now, I open \printshares.company.com in the "virtual" terminal in rdesktop (avoiding tsclient since it has a Bug #94743 in tsclient (Ubuntu): Terminal Server Client isn't able to copy to/from clipboard) - and I can see all printers fine.. However, when I'm on my Linux machine directly on the work network, I try and do something like:
$ ping printshares.company.com

Is it possible to retrieve the - let's call them "connection settings" - from the Windows terminal session, so I could replicate them under Linux when running smbclient? the IT department running these Windows servers is quite irritated by people using Linux; and will offer no support to those kinds of "customers". Furthermore, if obtaining those settings requires some installation on the client session, since I don't have permissions to install anything on the Windows terminal session.
General :: Windows User Not Authorized For Printer On Ubuntu Server But File Share Is Ok
Apr 13, 2011Two users on both Ubuntu server and Windows 7. Both users admins on Windows. Used SWAT to set up Samba. Printer is local to Ubuntu server. User A can access both file share and printer on Ubuntu server from Windows. User B can access the file share but can only see the printer, not use it. Have looked everywhere I can think of to find out why one user has access and the other doesn't on both Windows side and Ubuntu side. As far as I can tell, they are set up the same. Can anyone provide some direction on what I should look at to find out what might be preventing User B from being authorized to use the printer on Ubuntu?

Sep 18, 2009I have a Centos 5.3 server with Samba file shares and a shared Samba printer. I am not running a domain.
I recently changed my windows desktop pc from an XP machine to a vista 64 machine... It has a different user name. Everything went pretty smoothly - and the and the vista machine found the smba printer - and even downloaded the driver from the samba server. he printer works OK - and the file shares are fine.
The only thing which is quite odd - is that the Printer Properties dialogue takes more than 30 seconds to come up - and every action you attempt with the dialogue takes a similar amount of time.

Printer is an HP Photosmart C4400 All in One series, and is connected to the desktop via USB.Prints OK from desktop. I have CUPS set up on both machines, and the laptop can see the printer. Desktop firewall allows CUPS in on port 631. Printer properties are set to enabled and shared Desktop is set to publish printers, and laptop is set to show printers from other systems. Fine until I try to print from laptop, when print job is shown as sent, but printer remains idle. Another thing is that on the laptop, the "enabled" setting drops off. I think this must be a configuration issue, but cannot find an answer anywhere. File sharing using Nautilus works fine.

When running XP I can share the printer with my two XP laptops without problem. I cannot share it when the desktop is running Xubuntu. Neither laptop can see the printer. Feb 2, 2010Is there someone out there that makes something simple that you can network and share a printer between Kubuntu and Vista? I have my office computer running Kubuntu, which also has the printer attached to it. My media machine downstairs is running Vista, which I'd like to be able to print and share files from. I've been doing some reading that you need to use Samba. So, I installed Samba through Synaptic, and it appears that nothing happened. So, I did some more googling, and found I had to install something about system-config-samba, so I did.
I now have a Samba icon under k-menu > System > Samba. However, when I click on this icon, nothing happens. It does nothing (just like clicking on the Network Manager icon, which does nothing as well). So, I am now utterly confused. Is there a way to change samba settings via gui? I'm not comfortable with typing unknown commands into the terminal, as usually there is no explanation as to what's going on. If there was a step by step explanation, that would be ok, but as of now, there is nothing. Is there a simple setup tool out there?

Ubuntu :: Configure 11.04 Server To Share Printer Using Terminal (not GUI)
Jun 27, 2011I've got an Ubuntu Server 11.04 running and the primary use of it is to store backup files using Deja Dup, connecting through SSH using shared key (no passwords) authentication. This works on the LAN and WAN, which is what I want. I also want to set up an HP Officejet 5610 MFD to be shared on the LAN only, for printing and scanning. The server obviously doesn't have a GUI.
I've searched and come up with some near misses, but everywhere I try it seems someone is using a GUI on the system serving the printer. See: [URLs]
What I'd really like would be a post like the following one. It seems to be what I'm looking for, but it is from 2006 using Ubuntu 6.## and that build ran on cupsys rather than cupsd if I read correctly. I haven't found an updated guide/post like the one below.

Slackware :: Cannot Print To Printer On Samba Share, Even Though It Is Accessible?
Jan 28, 2010I'm running slack64-current.I setup samba to share a printer on my home network. I can print to the printer locally.The printer is visible on the network. However when I try to print anything on the printer via samba (or cups for that matter) from either the local machine or the remote machine, everything acts as if the job went through, but nothing happens. I'm sure I've seen this before on another slack machine that is currently unavailable, but I can't remember what the answer was, and I'm trying to be more precise with this setup so that I actually learn something.

Mar 15, 2010I have connected a Windows 7 pc to a Ubuntu pc using a crossover cable & TCPIP. This works fine - can ping both ways and can 'see' both icons however when I try to setup the printer in Ubuntu the task fails at a prompt fpr user name - workgroup - password prompt. It tells me I must give a password to connect to the Windows box. This setup has worked when using WinXP but fails now. I have used all passwords known to me but nada. Where in the world is the Authentication dialogue originated? I'm both new to linux commands and loosing the will to live!

Aug 11, 2011I'm using an up-to-date installation of Squeeze with the default Gnome desktop and am trying to print. My knowledge of configuring printers is very limited if it even exists. Since a friend of mine is able to print from her Ubuntu computer, my plan is to copy her. Here's how she does it. She goes under System->Administration->Printing on the desktop. Then a window pops up titled "Printing" that lists various printers that are supposed to exist. It's possible to add one by selecting Add->Printer. It asks for the root password and then a new window pops up titled "New Printer" which has a subwindow called "Select Device" In my case, the "Select Device" window has the following options to choose from:
- AppSocket/HP JetDirect
- Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)
- LPD/LPR Host or Printer
In her case, she has an extra option called "Windows Printer via Samba". This is the option that she uses. The other options don't seem to work for her. I'm assuming that I just need to install some package in order to make this option magically pop up for me. Does anyone know what package this may be? I currently have the packages smbclient, samba-common and samba-common-bin installed..........

Jan 22, 2011I have installed ubuntu 10.10 and the Samba addon to configure my shares to my Windows terminals.This is what I got
Firewall off (utf disabled)
Internal Sata /dev/sda1 (EXT4 FS)
External USB HDD /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/SG1500GB (EXT4 FS)
I have two shares
1. //home/test - Which I can see and access with no problems (can't write to it though even though I set the share as writable?, but, I can read from it). This is available to everyone. My windows terminal can see this folder and access it. This is on my main 80GB internal drive /dev/sda1.
2. //media/SG1500GB/Music. I set this up for everyone full access and I can see it at all my Windows machines but,I can't get into the folder. Windows keeps giving me an error stating network path not found.I also try to access it via the Nautilus (Places/Network/system/music) and get an error message "unable to mount location, Failed to mount windows share". This drive is mounted per the disk utility.

Feb 22, 2011i have 3 comps(running suse 11.3) and a laptop(running vista sp2). i have installed samba on all suse comps. i have a printer attached to one of the comps and it has been shared also the internet connection on that comp has been shared. all the computers are connected using lan cables through an ethernet switch. i also have a wireless router which is connected to the ethernet switch.
I am able to view all the comps on the network except the laptop running vista. all the desktops are visible on the network and are able to print and share files on the network and also connect to the internet. the laptop running vista can connect to the internet but its not visible on the network and nor can it share files across the network or access the printer.
