Jan 10, 2011I'm using NFS and I have the following problem. After ~100 days, the client and server lose connection, but the client doesn't know about this, it gives no error. The problem is that the changes on the server side aren't visible on the client side.
The nfs options are: "noatime, nolock, hard, udp, notcp, nosuid, nodev, rsize=8192, wsize=8192, actimeo=60"
The kernel version is: 2.6.16.27 built with 250 Hz. Is this an already corrected issue in a kernel version? Or are my options wrong?

Feb 18, 2011First of all, let me just state that i want to make a small server for my home.. which includes hosting a website and a small FTP server.
Now as far as ease, stability, use, etc.. just overall, which would be more ideal to use for this?
My top choices are FreeBSD and Ubuntu Server.
However, I do not know which of these to go with, since this is my first time setting up a server. I hear BSD is really best for web servers, but I would like to hear what the people at LQ has to say.
I know Ubuntu Server would probably be more easy to set up, but how is it in terms of stability and speed?

Aug 7, 2010As per our requirement, I need to implement a Secure FTP server for around 500 users which includes security level on both - Transfer and Rest data. Apart from this I also need the following features -
1. Size quota on Users & reminder mails for the same
2. Password expiry notifications and user interface to change their password within specified time interval
3. Aging of data - After specified time, data will be moved to some other location from their home directory
4. All type of log maintenace for each file and user and log exporting
5. Uploading & Downloading speed consistency as per server level.
6. Read-write interface for user and read-only interface for their client for the same account.
7. Backup and Recovery options.
As of now, I am using VSFTPD which does not give these much of features in combine.

Jan 4, 2010If you hadn't guessed it from my last 3000(ish) java-related posts, I'm a Java n00b writing a Java Applet for a work project. I got to the part was I was about to write the applet code that would send HTTP requests to my CGI scripts. But I read some paragraphs in a book praising Java servlets as better that CGI because they are easier to use and give much better performance server side. My server load isn't very big, though, and I was wondering if it would be worth taking the time to learn about Java servlets and how to set up the server side configuration on my Fedora web server.

752MB Ram
The site loads slow and clicking a link almost freezes the page for a second. Also, the page loads could be much faster. We've been running mysqltuner and have pretty much optimized all slow queries. Is there anything we can do to fine tune the server for faster and more responsive?

Oct 18, 2010Coming from a C and C++ background, with a little SQL at university, I was wanting to move to web development and implement an idea of mine for evaluating movies. In a nutshell, the idea is this: produce a score for each movie by only taking into account opinions of people of your age and psychological profile, as derived from a questionaire. Or a score derived from the opinions they have given about other movies, the more match there is with your opinions about those movies, the higher the coefficient for their opinion in the production of the movie score.What's the easiest way to implement this, what language is the easiest to learn?

I belong to a fly fishing club. We have tapes of fly tying sessions dating back to 1992. Since we are registered as an educational charter with the state, I would like to make the available to our web sight viewers for learning.The club owns all these tapes and they were filmed at club sponsored functions. There should be no copyright problems. I am in the process of converting them to digital.

Feb 4, 2010I have a mail server (dovecot+postfix) on Centos with amavis/clamav installed and working. It correctly identifies spam as such and puts it in the headers. I want it to move those suspected spam messages into a spam folder. I do have this working on an older debian server that I didn't setup. If someone could point me in the direction if where that config might be. I can't find it in any of the mail config files.Could there be a seperate package doing this?

Mar 19, 2010I have prepared a static lib(.a) comprising 2 function definitions. I have created a different shared library(.so) comprising 2 more functions. The two functions of .so use the functions defined in the .a file. That is, the .so file uses the services of the .a file. Next, I create an executable that uses the shared library(.so). When I build my executable, it needs to be linked with the .a file as well. it gives me undefined reference for the functions defined in the .a file. Why is that so? I am posing this question because, the .a file has already been included(static linking) while bulding the .so. Is there any workaround so that I need not link the .a file with my final executable?

Jul 22, 2011I am running a CentOS 5.6 Server with a website and Forum. The website has a contact form and users can email various people in the organization. I have setup sendmail to send any mails like this to my email address on a Windows machine.The problem is that there emails don't have a header which has the senders original email header. It comes from localhost on my sendmail. How can I get any mail generated from the apache site to ALSO send mail to root on the Centos Server? That way I should be able to see the header and report the spammer or block them.

Jan 12, 2010I have changed my home network a bit, and everything works extremely fast, except for my apache server, which seems to serve webpages so slowly, it is abnormal. Even simple directroy pages are served in around 5 sec, and this is not a joke! It used to work pretty fast. What I have changed is that i replaced a hub with a switch, and that I linked my personal PC with my server together through a hub. I also installed Gnome desktop on the webserver machine. Jan 24, 2010I am upgrading my server and I have a lot of sites. Since I cannot take my server down for a few days, maybe a week until I manage to migrate all the sites to the new machine, I figured I could migrate them one by one. After migrating one, I would somehow tunnel the requests of that name virtual host to my internal machine. When everything is migrated, I would then switch the machines, update ip's and stuff and everything will work just fine.
However I cannot seem to find a way to do this tunneling. is this at all possible? If not, what alternatives do I have?

May 12, 2010I'm moving an office intranet server to a new machine running CentOS 5 with apache 2.2.3. Everything worked fine on my old CentOS server and nothing new or fancy being tried on the new machine: default server, no name virtual hosts etc.. However, on the new server I can only see the index.html page when I browse to it. Index.html is a frameset which calls other pages to load from subfolders to /var/www/html. The frameset loads but in each frame I see "The requested URL /hot_stuf/data_colm.html (etc.) was not found on this server.".
